Curses / [Feature Idea] More complicated random events?
« on: October 04, 2013, 03:00:28 am »
I think the game should allow for more complicated random events to make the gameplay somewhat more varied.

For example: the squad hears/reads news about a liberal demonstration coming in two weeks. The squad has to influence the public opinion on the issues enough within these two weeks, so that enough people attend the demonstration, thus raising these (and other) issues even further, as well as their media importance and the public opinion on the LCS. (Or, otherwise, to disinterest the public in a conservative rally so that only a handful of people attend.)

Curses / Please delete (was: Failed to compile)
« on: August 04, 2013, 01:28:41 pm »
For some reason, I keep getting this error when compiling the latest SVN revisions:

Code: [Select]
██████@usr-laptop:~/Software/lcsgame$ make
make  all-recursive
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/██████/Software/lcsgame'
Making all in src
make[2]: Entering directory `/home/██████/Software/lcsgame/src'
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `daily/news.cpp', needed by `crimesquad-news.o'.  Stop.
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/██████/Software/lcsgame/src'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/██████/Software/lcsgame'
make: *** [all] Error 2
[/s]

My fault. I modified the configuration files a while before (to fix Makefiles, IIRC) and forgot that.

Curses / I'd like to submit a different font.
« on: April 30, 2013, 01:23:42 pm »
When I tried to reimplement a "school shooting" headline (as part of the "prisons and guns" patch), I noticed that even such a simple headline was too large to fit in one line.

This is mostly due to the fact that the font used in these headlines is gigantic, and, while in some cases, it's good (a headline followed by a picture doesn't require any text at all -- HATE RALLY and BASTARDS being good examples), it's bad in most others.

Here is my attempt at creating a smaller, yet well-readable font:

I hope there is still some good information on the CPC file format, so that it would be possible to use this font in the actual game.

After seeing references to a Stalinist squad in both dev/ and src/ folders of LCS' SVN tree, I was wondering if there were any other features disabled in the source code of Liberal Crime Squad.

This is by no means a complete list, and

Apparently, there's quite a few:

Political views:

From all the views one can see when searching opinion polls, two of them are commented out:

VIEW_PRISONS and VIEW_POLITICALVIOLENCE.

The first one was supposed to indicate the population's attitude towards prisoner abuse and torture, and the second one is quite directly related to both the LCS and CCS -- whether direct political violence is justified.

Were you surprised, when first playing the game, why even after shooting dozens of Conservatives, the media never turns the squad's attack into an "LCS rampage"? The functionality is in the game, but commented out.

Depending on the amount of political (breaking machinery, releasing files or prisoners...) and violent (assault, murder) crimes, the news could (with a low enough political violence view) turn even a positive attack into a negative rampage.

The other views are only mentioned in the news/ sources:

VIEW_GUNS:

Supposedly, this view would indicate whether the public supports gun control. A negative news article has the title "KILLER STOPPED", while the positive one is titled "SCHOOL SHOOTING". Surprisingly enough, the unused function constructfillerstory() in news/filler.cpp has news articles for some of the views.

The VIEW_GUNS one reports about a Columbine-style school shooting, the VIEW_PRISONS one tells us about a former prisoner's new book, the VIEW_POLITICALVIOLENCE tells us about an owner of an "Un-American" book store who has met with Conservative injustice, the second VIEW_PRISONS one tells about a hostage riot at a prison, and the second VIEW_POLITICALVIOLENCE reports about a hostage crisis perpetrated by a minor crime squad (Stalinist Comrade Squad, Radical Feminist Brigades, 2nd Amendment Society or Anarcho-Fascist Collective).

Activities and skills:

ACTIVITY_STUDY_COOKING and SKILL_COOKING.

This skill would have influenced one thing: how much money would it take to feed the squad (for abandoned facility locations) per month. The better the skill, the less money spent. Eating in apartments or the Homeless Shelter would be free.

Game start options:

The first question ("The day I was born in 1984...") has a commented sixth option:

"F - the United Nations condemned Iraq's use of chemical weapons."

Choosing this option would have added 2 points to the health stat and set the birthday as March 30, 1984.

The joke items for the first question (which were only added as text) are "The anniversary of Hitler's suicide. - SKILL_PISTOL 1 (lol)" and "Indira Gandhi Killed."

Locations:

An arms dealer ("Black Market") would be available in the Outskirts of the City. This area would have been filled with mercenaries, which one could talk to and ask for weapons (just like the gangsters in the crack house).

Crimes:

When gun laws are Elite Liberal, carrying (or using) a gun in public becomes (ostensibly) illegal. However, this is not the case in actual game, where laws for carrying or using illegal weapons are commented out.

Curses / "God mode" bug?
« on: March 15, 2013, 12:30:36 am »
I tried compiling LCS from SVN on my Raspberry Pi, and it seems to have run into some sort of a bug: conservatives can't be (F)ought at all,and they don't respond even if they were alarmed at the site -- so that one can just walk away from everyone without them even noticing or shooting. (They do notice if one steals something before their eye, though.

Curses / Yet another First Victory post
« on: December 06, 2012, 03:46:10 am »
Today, I've just succeeded at liberalizing (in Democrat mode, though) the country by September 2015.

The method was simple -- a non-criminal founder (just in case), six dudes with AR-15s (and later M16s stolen from the Army) wearing first the usual clothes, then stealing Police, then Army Body Armor, and good old violence all the way; with properly timed raids to close the Police Station just so that they won't raid the hideout (closer to the end, a single day of Police being open added 160% heat to a 75% secrecy hideout).

The public opinion quickly became Elite Liberal in every aspect. Of course, some tried to stop this, but failed, as the CCS turned out to be too incompetent -- even their successful raids (on other organizations, not on the LCS hideout) failed to influence the public opinion in any significant way. Most turned out to be "rampages".

In 2012, an Elite Liberal president was elected, and the Congress was slightly liberalized -- with a conservative Senate and a moderate House. Luckily, the soon-followed (Feb 2013) Elite Liberal Amendment fixed this mistake. The next one also fixed the Supreme Court. After that, nothing could stop the federal policies from becoming Elite Liberal...

By 2013, the "peaceful squad" was expanded to add a hacker into the crew and make the founder write for the Liberal Guardian, which soon enough accidentally resulted in a Treason charge (I accidentally chose to publish government secrets).

Surprisingly enough, in August 2015, the CCS even managed to raid the LCS' hideout once, but failed thanks to the LCS members' superior Rifle skills and lots of booby traps placed around.

Curses / Non-criminals getting into a siege
« on: October 17, 2012, 01:10:35 pm »
Just been playing LCS, and got to the stage where the Congress is Elite Liberal, most laws are L/L+ too (no C/C+ ones at all) and, knowing that in the end-game, policemen will become moderate, I have got a squad of peaceful liberals (whose primary task would probably be printing the Liberal Guardian and, well, not violating the laws), but the problem is -- to teach the new squad, the old one must be located in the same building. And the building is only being protected from sieges by properly-timed attacks on the Police Station (as soon as it closes down, the LCS does not accumulate heat and will not be sieged).

The question is: if I give up a siege, all the liberals in it will be arrested, right? What will happen to those who didn't get any charges on them?

Curses / Returning from hiding may free liberals from prison
« on: October 04, 2012, 09:53:12 am »
I was just playing yet another game, sucking at it so much I suddenly decided to disband the LCS and wait for a bit. After doing so for 15 or so years and returning the squad back, I found out that the leader has returned with full skills and Juice intact.

The problem is -- the said leader was supposed to stay in jail for 5 more life sentences! He even kept his Orange Jumpsuit from the prison. The only problem I have now is that the most of the policies are Arch-Conservative...
