DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stairs

Coolness. Tried to pick a mountainous area, but looks like I was off a few squares. High up (level 148 I think), but no cliff. Site "Ageless ice-age of dragons", team "Bald martyrs of death" 
Like how even starting out there's a noble menu with starting jobs. Also that ground-level lakes go down, and their lower level is shown so you don't dig into them.
Anyway, anyone figured out how stairs work? Right now I'm putting a one-space "down stairway" on the top level, and a multi-space up/down stair below it. Works, but not sure if thats all needed.
