DF Gameplay Questions / How / where to get narwhals to spawn

I'd like to create a fort that specializes in the processing / slaughter of narwhals but I'm not entirely sure it's possible to get them to show up.  The main issue being that in all arctic zones, it's always below freezing, so there is never liquid water for narwhals to swim in.  I've even started a fort on the borders between an arctic ocean and a non-freezing ocean biome and haven't had any luck there either.  Do I really have to bring magma up from the magma pool, because I simply can't imagine them showing up naturally. What am I doing wrong, and have you ever seen a narwhal in any of your games?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Need help finding water

So my fortress is at a location where there is no water, or at least standing water or streams.  When I embarked it warned me about an aquifer and that I may have trouble finding stone, but so far I have not located it.  The ground level is almost all red sand, and I've been digging out extensive mines underneath in search of water (mostly for injured dwarves).  Is there any suggestions that you all have in finding this aquifer?  What Z levels are aquifer's usually found on?

DF Bug Reports / [39c] Merchant Caged Animals are all dead

The merchants from my Dwarven civilizations were nice enough to bring the animals I had requested, sadly however, they were all corpses in cages by the time they had arrived.  Not sure if this is intentional or not, but it's sorta gruesome getting cages with corpses of various animals inside in by trading.

I noticed when looking at my Region's civilizations in the textfile in the DF directory, that the rulers for human civilzations are not listed (though they are listed for all other civilizations).  Here's an excerpt:

I've noticed that many of the creatures in my large world with a defined seed number are born from unknown creatures, some with only the father or mother unknown, and some, like in this screenshot, from both parents.

DF Bug Reports / Unicorn murdered the Elven Civilization Leader

I was playing an adventure mode game with the latest DF, when I decided it would be fun to go an assassinate the leader of one of the elven civilizations to see what would happen.

Shortly after I got there and when I was looking around for the proper elf to kill, I suddenly get battle message including the elven leader.  Turns out she is fighting a Unicorn, and well, the Unicorn managed to kill the leader before I could get to her.  

   
   

This all seemed rather odd to me considering the nature of Elves and Unicorns, but I found it amusing never the less; it's probably a bug though.

DF Suggestions / Add Battles to legend screen

This might be a part of the army arc, but I think I should bring it up anyway.

In the legend screen, (and perhaps when asking about family, engravings), I think it would add a bit more color and more clarity, that if greater then a certain amount of creatures die in a short time frame, it should be considered a battle.  Something like:

In the midspring of 1051 Alu mortally wounded Udon Youngpower, who bled to death in the battle of Dancejoined/Blood Rain/etc

Also in the battle legend screen, there should be a list of all the battles that have taken place obviously, but also the info included in the battle should be who died, but who part as well.
