DF Gameplay Questions / Is there any way to develop personality traits?
« on: January 16, 2013, 02:11:02 am »
Do scaring, wounding, witnessing deaths and killing things by my hand have any impact on personality traits? Or maybe it can be affected by other means?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My first tantrum spiral
« on: January 08, 2013, 11:49:53 pm »
I've heard about tantrum spirals before, but never confronted it during my 1.5-year gaming experience. I always run small forts of 25-40 dwarves and most of them are unique specialists. If I fail to protect myself from gobbo ambush that ends up in loosing a significant amount of worker dwarves, I always get bored and abandon/nuke with hfs my fortress.

Last time I decided to make an abovegrund fort with pop of 120-150 dorfs, that will withstand any difficulties. But having lack of space and work it ended up with overcrowded meeting hall and everybody making friends. I knew that it may lead to tantrum spiral, but believed that "talked with a friend recently" can save the situation.
Having a pop of ~55 beards, I trained 5-6 mace/hammerdorfs, 8-10 speardorfs, 10 crossbowdwarves and some random junk like daggerdorfs and lashers (with daggers, flails and whips from deceased thieves/ambushes). I should note that we were lack of metals, particulary armor. I only made some wooden shields and bought 2-3 breastplates and mail shirts.

I also had some dwarves for doc training. They were launched with a bridge and delivered to the hospital so my doc can get a little skill. One of cannon fodder dorfs died upon impact and his friends tantrumed a bit. Especially those who have been put to hospital (they were forced to patrol the bridge!). But they camed down soon.

I saw a bunch of ravens and decided that we need some meat. I lead rangers out and let them shoot some. While they were shooting birds, my woodcutter has run into ambush! I ordered everybody to move to help. Lucky he is, rangers were close. 2 gobbos were crippled, but other 3 charged to my rangers and killed 2 of them. Another 2 were wounded, but spear/hammerdwarves came to help and made a quick work of remaining gobbos.
We still were far from tantrum spiral, but 2-3 dwarves tantrumed and one resting cannon fodder dorf went berserk, killing another cannon fodder one. Not a big loss.

I made a shaft to the caverns (I thought it will release some fun, but none of these crundles were about to go to the surface). One troglodite came, but was smashed by my hammer squad.
Another 2-3 gobbo abushes showed up during next year, but was shooted from walls, run into cage traps or killed in melee with minor losses (0-1 dorfs). But during the last ambush I thought that it is unfair to kill gobbos from walls and lead all my forces outside. They charged at the gobbos and quickly revealed another 2 squads. That was not fun because all of my rangers were unhappy because of keas (long patrol on my booze stockpile - damn bird you won't get it!). I lost about 5-6 dwarves and that lead my fort to the spiral of blood.

It started with 5-6 tantruming dwarves, mainly rangers. One of them continued to punch my craftsdwarf (he made that bone bolts!). Another one deconstructed a workshop and bridge. But then another resting cannon fodder dorf went berserk! He was killed wery fast because all military was inactive to stay in the meeting hall and get happy thoughts from chatting. This death made a bit more tantruming dwarves.

I thought a bit about trying to recover, but there is nothing I could do. Abovegroung fort was not build completely, it was like a open field inside the walls (with a tower for hospital, dining room and bedroom). No way to separate dorfs, many of them tantruming (leading to inability to build something fast). An I decided to watch.

Some of my dorfs were stricken by melancholy, 2 or 3 went berserk (and was killed soon), but things got worse: my melee military started to tantrum. Flying longland grass was not a kind of danger, but everything has changed when my macedorf military commander went berserk! He was the dwarf with strong weapon skill and had the best equipment in the fort. He was the gobbo threat, killed most of the ambushers.
He quickly processed 9 dwarves and being killed by.. WTF??? Miner, stricken by melancholy, drived his pick into macedorf's head! I decided that we should make a squad of remaining dwarves (there was 9 of them), but only one was in the mood to follow my orders. For the fun, I've opened doors letting 2 goblins from ambush in. But they also were killed by the said miner.

Soon almost every dwarf died from thirst or berserk fists, I ended up in 1 sane and quite happy dorf. And fortress of blood and death.
That was Christmas time and I decided not to spent my time on this fort anymore and abandoned. That may be the interesting challenge to recover from it with 1 dorf, but i thought it is just a boring work of hauling corpses and clothes.

General Discussion / "Will it take off?" question
« on: December 21, 2012, 04:05:18 am »
This forum has showed for me that we have here a lot of men with above average mental abilities (sorry for my English). And I have a challenge for you!
I want to test it on a simple question concerning physics and logics. The question itself is a meme and I want you to think it yourself, without using google.

Quote
A plane is standing on a runway that can move (some sort of band conveyer). The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyer moves in the opposite direction. This conveyer has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyer to be exactly the same (but in the opposite direction). Can the plane take off?

So, what do you think of it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Q about named creatures
« on: December 18, 2012, 05:55:08 am »
Ok then.
I'm running a fortress and animals are coming/leaving. They are randomly generated and goes to nothingness when they live map.
But here comes the giant jumping spider. That bastard killed 3 of my dorfs and got a name! (Spring right after embark, i wanted some meat and sent 3 naked dwarves with pick, axe and mace to kill it).
The question is: when he leaves the map, he will remain in the legends. Is it possible to see this beast in this fort again (or in one of the next fortresses?) and can I find him in adventurer mode?

If I embark right where my previous fortress was (not reclaming, but new embark), will I find dug tunnels and walls? Or site will be untouched?

Creative Projects / Draw-by-request game
« on: November 21, 2012, 12:40:21 am »
I want to introduce to you a fun game. It is called "blind phone" and the game is about requesting, drawing requests, commenting, drawing comments and so on.
Please note that this web portal is Russian (please report if you know something similar in English!) so it can be hard to impossible to use it. (I suppose terrible encoding issues /UTF-8 there/)
And you should learn some basic controls.

Link

What is it?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

How to play(login/draw/comment):
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've created a new DF room there (bay12forums room) because old DF rooms (aka Dwarf or Dwarf2) contain enermous amount of Russian languageg and almost completely not understandable by others.
Please try this and write down is it possible to play this game.

DF Gameplay Questions / Foreign weapons compared to native?
« on: November 13, 2012, 07:37:31 am »
Is there any purpose of using foreign weapons?
I've read about uber killing whips, but it seems more like a bug for me and i'm gonna edit raws to balance it.
But what about other weapon types? Can someone give me explanation on the following questions:

1. Are picks cool? What if I rush-train a bunch of miners then give them armor and put into squad? will they grumble because mining is not a military skill?
2. Compare: 2hander, long sword, scimitar and dagger against short sword.
3. Compare: halberd and pike against spear.
4. Compare: Great axe/halberd against battle axe.
5. Compare: flail, maul, morningstar and scourge against war hammer.

and small stupid question: will dwarves hold shield among with multigrasp weapon?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Scary Wagon
« on: November 13, 2012, 01:50:53 am »
I got this idea from The Real Wagon thread.

. Turn off flying creatures by some mean (editing raws mb?).
 . Disable evil rain/cloud
. Bring tons of food and booze.
. Bring a lot of rabbits/cats/other small cheap animals
 . Bring one pick.
 . Bring 2 wood.
 . Embark in terrifying.

After embarking you should channel 5x5 frame around your wagon. While miner is busy, other 6 dwarves should pen lots of animals out of this frame. Then burrow everyone but miner in 3x3 wagon area and remove ramps. Drop 1 wood to miner and let him build up stairs, one of other 6 dwarves should buid down stairs. The last step is to burrow miner to wagon area and remove up stairs.
Domestic animals will soon be killed by zombos and reanimated.
Now all your dwarves are locked in 3x3 zone inside the starting wagon. No beds to sleep on, chairs to sit on, or work to keep them occupied. They will be caught in the rain, the snow and with all that food around them will probably be crawling with vermin. The only thing that will keep them sane is each other.
And lots of fun outdoors!
I wonder, what will happen next? Will they die of thirst because of 'drink' jobs cancellations? Or maybe one of them wil be scared to death, go berserk and kill others?
I'm gonna try this on this weekend!

DF Gameplay Questions / Quick q about building destroyers
« on: November 08, 2012, 12:54:02 am »
Will building destroyer that is currently destroying my door be distracted by a bunch of axedwarves that came to kill him? Or the door is now the primary target and he either demolish it or die trying?

DF Gameplay Questions / I demand more science!!
« on: November 06, 2012, 04:20:38 am »
I have lack lf free time because of my work, but i got a lot of interesting ideas in the field of dwarven artllery. Such as throwing magma-conflagrated burning charcoals or just bunch of war geese at gobbos using drawbridge.

Has anybody done some science in this field and can share his discoveries?

DF Gameplay Questions / would clowns attack gobbos?
« on: November 06, 2012, 04:09:28 am »
what if i break into circus and let clowns get to the surface during siege? Will they attack goblins. Or wild animals?

If they will, then I have a decent defence plan!
At first, we should build a watchtower with some chicks chained inside it, then get one suicide miner inside and lock the entrance with wall. The miner should channel down to candyland and free the clowns. After eating the miner, clowns go up to eat chicks and probably will stay in tower, spitting fireballs and brething fire at invaders.

DF Gameplay Questions / Magma on embark?
« on: November 02, 2012, 06:31:23 am »
Is it possible to edit raws in such a way that dwarven civilisation get acces to magma? And then bring some on embark / or on trade caravan?

just imagine a dvarven caravan exploding in a huge burst of magma because they brought some 7/7 tiles of it (double fun if it happens on the trade depot inside ur fortress)!
Or this may be the wagon pouring all it's content on unlucky building destroyer that tried to demolish it. Btw unlucky may be your dvarves because wooden wagon will conflagrate with magma inside.
