Biggest Update yet: Moved from the Roleplay forum, as this may be more fitting. All of this will be changed possibly to fit the circumstances, but may be fine for now. currently how it was in the last forumbigger update:The slavery and freedom angle is one I had thought of before, everyone suggesting it has reminded me that I had thought of it once, and makes sense. Thank you for reminding me about it all everyone.
I had just been trying to create a world where dragons get to be dragons without having to be stretched to fit an anthropic world. Not out of misanthropy, but for want of a world in which dragons get to evolve and grow in a world not influenced or even
made for humanity, one where the human race and all the bias and gravity around them in fantasy is removed so others can take center stage for once.
Anthropomorphizing some non-human qualities, such as emotions, are fine literary tools, so I am willing to mix and match.
end of bigger updateI have been writing and planning out a world to get published in novels. I just want to see how popular it would be by getting others involved in talking and making a game of a similar premise:
It is a world, and experiment, to re-imagine dragons in a less human-centric way, and how a world and civilization would evolve and grow with dragons based off of (but not quite are) the breeds and species of Earthen mythology.
I jsut want help creating a fun world others would want to take part in making for the bay12 version.
So please, do suggest what you think would be better cultural influences or ideas if you want or can in the following post, and also ideas for non-human societies, cultures, and buildings (if there are any).
Till suitable names for species are found, I will use the Terms from our culture and mythology till further notice.I already have much background info:
Note: The following world info is not to be our Earth's old and new worlds, but in the sense of grouping continents and ideas. This world is one divided into four large continents and many large islands.
There is the "old world" equivalent with two continents and a chain of islands far north, and a "new world", a single continent and many small islands. There is an isolated island continent separate from the rest that is not quite Africa, but not quite Australia.
I have been trying to, at first, re-imagine the different types of dragons being put in to what fantasy rolls humans and elves and such would have.
I am moving away from that, and have instead settled for breaking stereotypes and bringing the lesser known breeds to light. Just remember I am only using the names from our Earthen culture since I do not know what to call things yet.
Knuckers: The "slimy", snakey English serpent-dragons that live in the famous "knucker holes" with a poisonous bite. Re-imagined: I had thought to re-imagine them as more intelligent, and similar in a way to dwarves, but living in places more of dirt than rock, more like rocky islands or swamps, such as the ones of the "Old World". Cultural influences that would be interesting to mix would be Swedish and Amercan. The idea: they may look "scary" or "stupid" but should not be dismissed that easily.
Eastern Serpents: The long, noodly "dragons" (if they are that) of Asiatic mytholgy. Very magical and able to shift shape. Re-imagined: I Had seen them as mountain dwellers, living in an open air society that moves around or lives in gigantic carved mountains of the mainland Old World. I think they would be a good mix of English, Japanese, and French culture. Idea: Either semi-nomadic to cave or home-dwelling beings who live long and have many political struggles.
Western European dragons: What many people have come to mind with the idea of the dragon, maybe the archetypical idea even. Re-imagined: I had thought of them as one of the inhabitants of the Eastern part of the "New World". not the equivalent of Native Americans, but a species learning to industrialize and how to work with others of their species. Usually very prideful and independent, often living off in "palaces" on their own or with those who have earned their trust. I picture them as sort of colonial South AND North American in culture. NOT just USA colonial, but also Spanish and so on.
Wyverns: Yes, I am biased with love for these. They are from French and British mythology, and historically where either viscous in England, or benevolent in France. Re-imagined: I myself think of them, for this world, to be the smallest and most sociable along with easterners and knuckers, and having adapted to their large continent of the New World, originating in the south where the ones there are still nomadic cliff, coastal, and canyon dwellers of small groups, to big cities similar to ancient Thai or Indian city-states in Asia in the central jungles and forest of the New World, having had to adapt after catastrophe and migration. So I picture a wide cultural range and temperament spectrum ranging from almost Aztec to Inca, Chinese to Indian subcontinent.
Other possible breeds:
Feathred serpents
Nagas
Humans?! (who knows?)
Updated post: Each species would have things they are rather good at making that reflect their varied physiques, customs, the climate, and so on.
Wyverns:Having a build that is somewhat more batlike with "wings" and arms" being the same for a species with only two legs and two wings means that they would be rather good at small task with their feet, such as weaving and fine, intricate crating that compensates for lack of "hands" by other species standards.
Knuckers: Earth movers, not in the sense of dwarves moving mountain rock, but the ability to have long, cavernous tunnels, navigating rather well, and a rather good lookout system for each other, similar to naked mole-rats in a way. Rather organized.
Easterners: Their works of creation represent concept unique to each long-lived individual, from puzzles and stories, to ancient mountain themselves being crafted into a work of art. I need help thinking about things for them, please.
Westerners: Rather extravagant, having the cities the most "human-like", for ones able to live with others. many times going off to settle and build as extravagant of a place as they can for themselves, building up as successful of a life as they can to prove their majesty to the world. They are rather good collectors of the world's info, readily mixing old and new things to suit their needs.
More edits:1. I am not trying to re-create Skyrim or dnd and such. Each is their own work. I care about creating a work that is not a copy of either. I Mean this in that here, I am just trying to work with a premise and move with others here just to see if people would even read what I write after this experiment on this website, separate from my work. To create a rather fun world with characters people would like and enjoy on bay12.
