Masterwork DF / New player with 2 questions

Hello!  I'm newly back to DF and decided to try out Masterwork.

I've been playing with it for about 2 weeks, and I have most of it kinda figured out.

I have 2 questions.

When I started this fortress, I toggled every invader switch off so I could learn in peace.  Even if I turn them back on, they won't start invading due to their absence during world-gen, right?

Secondly, I can't seem to figure out the guildhall.  I have plenty of coins from the mint, but all the options at the guildhall are redded out.

Can one of you walk me through how you use the guildhall to put specific dwarves into specific guilds?

I love this mod, thanks for all the great work!

DF Gameplay Questions / I need help with my new netbook

I've been playing DF for years now on my desktop, but since it died, I can't really justify buying a new one.  I have a netbook, but it has no numberpad, just the keyboard.

Is there any way to re-map the keys or something?  I get as far as outfitting the first 7 dwarves, but can't find a way to enter anything.  The plus key it's looking for doesn't exist on this device.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

DF Gameplay Questions / Constructions on the Edge, and Waterslides

Could you build an elevated causeway to the edge of the map, and otherwise seal off your fortress so your traders will always leave and enter the same way, and invading gobs will enter and leave in the same area?  I know you can't dig or channel at the edge, or build walls, but can you build a floor to the edge? 

Also.

I'm building a large tower with a sealed chamber at the top, and using a series of pumps to lift water into it.  The inside of the tower is a spiral of ramps.  If I empty the water into the top of the tower, will a dwarf be pushed down the ramps safely?  I'm hoping that the huge number of mists will result in happy dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Exercise Room

Am I the only one who uses an exercise room?

I have a room full of pumps, and set all my unneeded immigrants to work out in addition to hauling.  Next to that room I have a series of catapults shooting into a wall.

Before a few seasons go by, my new guys are legendary, which solves the problem with the economy, and when they're legendary pumpers and siegers, they've got the stats to start training as wrestlers.

In my current fortress, I have 68 champions all of which have maxed out pump, siege, and engraving, in addition to all the basic combat skills.

I really, really hope that somehow it will be compatible with the version that allows you to send out armies.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dam the river

I'm wanting to dam the river.  For various purposes.

So far I've planned to dig an underground channel leading to the chasm, and putting some floodgates into that channel, and diverting the river into that by digging underneath it.  From there I could do whatever I wanted with the dry riverbed, then put the floodgates back up and the river would go back to it's original path.

Is there a safer/less insane way to do this?

DF Gameplay Questions / River/Brook questions

I am not at my DF computer, and I'm wondering about my next big plan.

I want to put a bunch of waterwheels on a river, and am wondering if I could put up a series of bridges, so as to put waterwheels in the middle of the river.  Can I put up mechanisms of various types on bridges, or should I just build floor tiles over the river and do it that way?  Or can you even build floor tiles over water?

The brook on my map is at the very bottom of a deep gorge, and I'm going to try and harness the water and power to put a waterfall in my dining room, at the top of a central mountain in the map, that is about 15 z-levels above the level of the brook, but even with the rest of the flat land.

DF Gameplay Questions / Flux importing

I got a great starting point, plenty of everything but I can't find any flux.

How do I import it?  The stone blocks option from the caravan request menu?  Can I use say Limestone blocks in my magma furnaces and it works just like using regular limestone rocks?

Can you use blocks of rocks, as rocks, is what I'm asking.

DF Gameplay Questions / Queen question

So I worked my way up through the nobles, made a bunch of rooms with masterwork rose gold and black bronze furniture with aluminum statues so my new monarch and consort would be happy.

Then I found the adamantine totally by accident.

So when my next immigrant wave shows up, instead of the monarch, consort, advisor, and some royal guards, I get a peasant by herself.  I know she's supposed to be the "queen in peasant's clothes".  She has all these relatives in her bio.

But it's been a year or so, and I keep waiting for her to start doing the whole "ruling" thing, and no go.

Is it ever going to happen?  Is my duke going to be it as far as challenging demands?  He's terrible.

DF Suggestions / Sauna

How about a heated baths, to solve my dwarves being completely covered in mud?  A 3x3 building that would need to be filled with water, and if you built it over magma the dwarves cleaned themselves twice as fast with a happy thought.

It would give you something to do with soap as well.
