DF Gameplay Questions / Using removebadthoughts script?
« on: June 01, 2013, 06:33:11 am »
I've been trying for a while to try to use the removebadthoughts script, but with no luck. (I don't usually go for cheating, but I kind of messed up my dwarves experiementing with a script, and then had it autosave, so I don't want to lose my fort/dwarves because of that)

I put the script (removebadthoughts.rb) into my hack/scripts folder, but it's still not showing up on my list of plugins.

I'm using the most current version of LNP Advanced

Has anyone else had any problems with this?

DF Suggestions / Sleep/coma syndrome
« on: June 01, 2013, 12:01:39 am »
That would be neat, a syndrome that induces sleep for an indeterminate amount of time (via gas, forgotten beast syndrome, fog, weather, etc)

Afflicted will immediately sleep, whether outside, inside, being attacked, etc.

Afflicted will sleep for maybe a month, and wake up starving and thirsty. Maybe they'll sleep more if exposed to multiple doses, and possibly risk starving to death in their sleep.

Maybe dwarves could drag them to the hospital to sleep it off?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Where do you go for inspiration?
« on: May 28, 2013, 09:15:37 am »
The "Share where you look for inspiration" thread! Where do you go when you are looking to be inspired, on fort layout, design, etc? I know personally, I'm a little dry on design ideas personally (both on a grand scale, and on a smaller scale, i.e. Bedroom design, throne room design, front gates, etc) and I'd love to hear other's. Bonus points for images!

I'll start with some easy ones: Ironforge (WoW) any of the dwarven cities in the Dragon Age game, and Erebor (The Hobbit)

Also this image has some interesting potential for a city based around an underground cavern.

DF Gameplay Questions / Clothing minimums/outfit sets?
« on: May 22, 2013, 03:48:27 am »
Does anyone know some clothing outfit combinations that meet the sanity requirements? I don't think I fully understand which pieces of clothes cover what parts, and avoid which happiness problems.

As of now, I've just been queuing trousers, tunics, and shoes.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do undead get weaker upon redeath?
« on: May 17, 2013, 12:10:38 am »
This is something that has been bothering me for a bit. Do the undead get progressively weaker, after dying again? I'm in an undead biome, and I'm wondering if it's worth waiting for my weapon traps to break the undead into increasingly smaller pieces, or dumping their bodies after the first death.

What factors into undead strength? (Example: An entact Troll, vs just his undead hair and hands)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Exporting/Saving Uniform templates?
« on: May 06, 2013, 08:38:19 am »
Is it possible to save or export uniform templates? Are they saved somewhere on my computer?

I'm getting kind of tired of having to make special customized uniforms (setting type, uniform, order, etc) each time I make a new fort.

Are these saved on some ini file somewhere, like embark profiles?

DF Gameplay Questions / Too many dwarves, too fast!
« on: May 02, 2013, 01:45:09 am »
I'm having a bit of an issue. I don't know what I'm doing to cause this, but I'm getting far too many dwarves too fast. I'm talking like.. 100-150 dwarves by my second year. Is this normal? What affect this? I know I can't stop immigrants entirely, but anything I can do/not do to not get like.. giant groups of 30 immigrants twice a year would be super.

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't ever seem to make a marksdwarf
« on: April 25, 2013, 10:14:15 am »
I've been playing DF for over 2 years now, and I've done everything from massive 20-year forts, to making expertly-trained legendary soldiers, but one thing I have never been able to get the hang of is having a marksdwarf. I understand the military system, but I can never seem to get them to train (I remember once being so excited that one of my dwarves shot one bolt at a target, but that was the last time.)
I know how to make a military, I've had dozens squads of fully-equipped, legendary melee fighters, but I can't make a dang dwarf shoot an arrow.

I've started a new embark, purely to try to master marksdwarfship, but I'm still running into problems.

My problem in this fort:
So I made an embark with a Proficient marksdwarf, full leather armor, a crossbow, 100 copper bolts, even a waterskin and backpack. As soon as I unpause, I make that dwarf a 1-man squad with an Archer uniform. I realized I forgot to embark with a quiver, so I immediately make one of my dwarves kill a horse, tan the hide, and then make a quiver.
My dwarf picks it up, as with all his other gear and weapon.
I still notice that he won't pick up any bolts from the wagon. I deconstruct the wagon to see if that helps, and after that I even make an ammo pile, and that doesn't work. Making a bin doesn't help either.

Anyway, I even make him active, I make "Minimum to train: 1", and he won't pick any ammo up! I make an archery range, and he still won't! I go to the ammo menu, and I see his squad is set to "Copper bolts (250) C T

I even try to make him go into combat, to see if that makes him pick up ammo, but he still just hammers them with the crossbow.

Anything I'm doing wrong? I've googled this problem, and it either suggests I'm an idiot who doesn't know how to make a squad active, or that all marksdwarves are bugged and broken.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Challanges of biomes, in order?
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:31:23 pm »
What would you say is the most difficult, and least difficult starting locations are?

In my opinion
Militarily, easiest to hardest:
-(Easy) Calm Island with no neighbors
-
-
-
-
-
-(Normal) Wilderness with goblin neighbor
-
-
-
-
-
-

-(Hard) Terrifying, with necromancer and goblin neighbors

How would you change/add to this? I'm sure a lot of newer people would like to know what to try next after 'mastering' a certain difficulty. I suppose economic difficulty could be another chart too (Dense forest with a lot of water and metals and supplies (easy) to rocky wasteland with no tools and low supplies (hard)

DF Suggestions / Forest fires make charcoal/ashes?
« on: April 16, 2013, 09:05:27 am »
It's be super neat if forest-fires sometimes make charcoal/ashes that can be collected?

They could turn the trees to "charred trees" which can be cut down by woodcutters, and it turns them into ashes, with a small chance for some kind of coal?

DF Suggestions / Assassin-y theives
« on: April 13, 2013, 06:58:41 am »
An interesting elaboration on the traditional kobold/goblin theives could be assassins. They sneak into your fort like normal theives, but with the intent of killing nobles? Or maybe particular soldiers who have high goblin-kill counts? I suppose the same could work with other civilizations if you're at war with them?

It would add an extra incentive to keeping nobles safe? I suppose there would also have to be more consequences for having nobles die (Maybe citizens, even if they don't know them, get sad if a noble dies, if they have somewhat positive personality traits?)

DF Gameplay Questions / Gearing up a squad via Manager
« on: April 02, 2013, 09:02:33 am »
This has been bothering me for a while, since I've never really had a successful army.

If I wanted to make all the gear I need for (example) a squad of 4 dwarves, what should I cue in my Manager?
I've been doing this, basically:

Forge Iron Armor x4
Forge Iron Greaves x4
Forge Iron Helm x4
Forge Iron Gloves x4
Forge Iron High Boots x4
Forge Iron Hammer x4
Forge Iron Shield x4

and I basically leave it at that. Is there anything I can do to improve this? Am I doing anything wrong here? Any suggestions would be mightily appreciated.
