Forum Games and Roleplaying / Uplift

For eternity the Asana have ruled the stars, their powers beyond human comprehension. Only their ships could traverse the vast emptiness of the void. Only their weapons could destroy the mysterious things which lurked in the hearts of the Shattered Planets and the Dead Stars. And while they generally did their best not to remind people of that, they did make a single request: If you have a dispute with another planet, come to us. We will determine how it is settled.

And if the only settlement the planets would accept was war, the Asana had an answer for that as well. Scattered about the stars are human worlds without spacecraft. Some don’t even have steam engines. Some don’t even have fire. And when all other options are refused, the Asana send a human from each side of the dispute to one of those planets, with a single instruction: Uplift.

You are one of those humans. Now you are here, deeper inside one of their ships than you have ever been, you sit, staring at a form. It’s pretty brief, but you are wondering why the Asana are having you fill it out. They probably already know everything there…and they have those impossible machines which could just take it from your mind as well.

Name:

Age:

Gender:

Planet of Origin:

Description:

You fill it out anyway, there’s no sense wasting time, and the wall whirls open, the metal vanishing into a faint vortex which fades away entirely, revealing a table with a few pieces of gear on it. There’s also a sign, which says “Pick Three.”

[] A long black sword which is ice cold to the touch.
[] A bronze helm with faintly glowing runes on it.
[] A living strip of skin. Touching it lets you feel some sort of mind.
[] A wooden hammer which feels surprisingly heavy.
[] A tome with words you can’t quite read, with a gear and musket on the cover.
[] A pen. As far as you can tell it’s perfectly ordinary.

You wonder why the Asana make their tech look like that. It might help you blend in, you suppose…

You take your equipment, sneer at your rivals, and then you are falling, falling, falling…

And you awaken on the hard stony ground. What do you do?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / A Demon's Tale

The night is peaceful. Quiet. Still. Though mountains tower ominously over the tranquil kingdoms that lie below, and ruined fortresses rise from their peaks like jagged teeth, no armies or raiders or monsters come to savage and destroy. In one distant village, quieter and more peaceful than most, isolated by a wild river, on the very edge of the mountains...the only sound is the soft swish of bat wings through the night sky. In most houses, everyone is asleep, some snoring gently. In one building an old man stays up, telling stories to a collection of wide-eyed children. He takes a sip from his tankard, pausing in the tale of how the Hundred Heroes brought down the vile kingdom of Vutai, of how the earth itself was shattered during the battle.

He is the first to feel it when a wave of dark energy blasts out from somewhere far too close for comfort. The man doesn’t know what causes it. No one does, as the burst sends animals fleeing, withers the grass and lichen that clings to the mountainsides, makes the very stones tremble with remembered evil. Many wake up, crying in sudden terror. The children listening so intently sob and shriek. Even those who sleep through the sudden shock find their dreams dark and disturbed and best left forgotten.

The events of this night will echo around the world, both immediately and because of what will rise. But what caused them…

[][FORM] The ancient evils practiced in the fortress left their marks, causing a spontaneous uprising of power which took the shape of a demon, with no memories of what has come before, only ambitions of what will be and the power to make them come true (Choose no starting traits, gain 2 starting power and 2 essence points)

[][FORM] Many demons died with Vultai, their power and essence shattered. Slowly these fragments drew together, at last growing strong enough to form a true demon once more. Many thoughts whisper in its head, minds not its own, offering knowledge but costing strength (Choose 4 starting traits, gain no starting power or essence points)

[][FORM] A demon was locked away here, having managed to survive the Fall of Vultai but little more. Locked away, spending its strength freely, it at last managed to escape, much of its memories and strength lost, but not all of either. (Choose 2 starting traits, gain 1 starting power and 1 essence point)

...Proved to be irrelevant. This new demon was a thing of terror, its name foul enough to tear a mind asunder, its form painful to look upon.

[][NAME]: The more terrifying and unpronounceable, the better. A really horrific name might see a bonus being handed out.

[][DESC]: Though no mortal can see your true form and live, their puny minds insist on there being something. What vile nightmare do they see as they look upon you? A really terrifying form might see a bonus handed out.

Hello, and welcome to A Demon's Tale, a suggestion game where you will play a vile and terrible demon, a creature of incredible might both physical and magical. I am going to give a quick description of the mechanics, which will probably be moved at some point.

Power is your base stat, unique to Demons, Angels, and Champions. It represents everything about you - your strength, speed, intelligence, magical capabilities, etc. Power is divided by the number of actions you do in a turn and then the result is added as a bonus to all rolls. Assuming no bonuses, you will start with 10. If an ordinary person's abilities were translated into power, they would have 1.

Essence Points represent your capability to change the world through your malevolent will. Spending an Essence Point will move a roll up one category - from Critical Failure to Serious Failure, for instance. They can be tricky to get back, so be careful with how you spend them.

Traits are special abilities you have, such as skill with creating undead or powerful persuasive abilities. Pretty much everything you will encounter as traits, which give bonuses or penalties to rolls. An example starting trait would give you +5 to any roll where you create or command undead.

All rolls will be on a d100. They will either be opposed, or your success or failure will be determined by these categories: 1-5 is a critical failure, 6-25 is a serious failure,26-50 is a partial failure, 51-75 is a partial success, 76-95 is a great success, and a 96-100 is a critical success. A natural critical will be more dramatic than an artificial one.

Note: I was planning on holding off on posting the trait list till after the initial vote for formation, description, and name, but I can post the list for you to vote on or examine immediately if you like.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Interest Check: Demons
« on: August 22, 2019, 09:58:01 pm »
I am heading back to school in a few days, so naturally, this is the perfect time to start another forum game.

As usual, the players will control a demon. This time though, I am thinking about doing a couple of changes. Specifically, I am thinking of making a rule that limits the number of actions you can take each turn.

A refresher on the normal mechanics. You have physical power and mental power, which serve as your stats and your life. You can gain and lose them in a variety of ways. You also have traits, which are boosts or penalties for specific actions or scenarios

You would probably start with three or four actions, and gain more as your power level increases. You would also get one action per hero character, and maybe some free actions.

What do people think of this? Is there any interest in another demon quest? And does anyone have any other thoughts or requests?

You are dragged through the Halls of the Legion, carried helplessly by two of the Four. While normally the chorus of suffering that fills every room of the world-fortress would make the raw evil of your soul sing in delight and gain in strength, now it serves as a reminder of your probable fate…to be consumed and destroyed. Even one such as you can fall. The very thought fills you with rage that would sear any mortal or lesser demon into oblivion. You shattered the armies of the Dragon Kings! You brought stars to the earth during the Siege of Acar! You destroyed the rebellious armies of the Tall Man and consumed their demonic master!  You should be leading the Legion, not being destroyed by those who command right now.

One day, you silently vow, you will have your revenge for this insult. You shall feast on the very essence of the Four…but that promise offers cold comfort, as you feel your own essence being stripped away and consumed. You draw into yourself, struggling to hold onto a few fragments, knowing it is futile no matter what you do. To your surprise, you are allowed to keep what you fought for…it is measly, especially compared to your prior might, but it is better than the annihilation you were expecting. Soon, you find out why, as you are dragged into the Fountain. Your sentence is briefly read, although you are more interested in sorting yourself out into something functional to pay attention. You catch most of it anyway – you are exiled, and will have to conquer a world all by yourself before the Legion arrives. An impossible task, you know, but that just means their shock will be greater when you succeed. And you will succeed, you have no doubt about it.

Suddenly you are in the Fountain, soaring through a void, heading to a large planet, slowly orbiting a distant star. You tumble about as you struggle to regain any control, the emptiness ripping at what is left of your essence. You have no choice but to endure and seek to regain control of yourself. It is fortunate you are so far away –you will have time to finish recovering from your ordeal and attempt to choose a landing spot. Of course, that also means more time exposed to the vacuum. And more time for your mind to be stolen. Probably by…the name of your rival, responsible for this humiliation escapes your grasp, as do many other things As you fly, you can feel your memories slipping away…all the memories of your time in the Legion, of your life ruling your own little fiendish empire before you joined them…it is slowly fading away. You manage to grasp a few things, but it is a remnant of a remnant.

The first thing you managed to keep is your name. It is a word in Demontongue – just hearing it will be enough to make a mortal’s mind twist. (What is it? And for a bonus, what would it translate to in a mortal’s language?)

The second thing, almost as important, is your first form. While you can shapeshift, this is the one you took when you were “born,” and it is the one you are holding right now. (While if a mortal looked upon you and saw your true form, their very soul would fray, this would be the approximation their mind would create.)

Thirdly, you kept a little bit of your special knowledge. (Choose one of the following.)

Lich Lord
Master of Mutations
Archmage
Demon’s Wrath
Hellcaller

What sort of terrain do you aim for?

Hello! I decided to try my hand at running a game again. This was inspired by Nuke9.13’s Demonhood and its sequel, and with his permission, I borrowed several of his mechanics for my own use, although I came up with a few of my own, like the trait system. Feel free to offer any constructive criticism you have.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / The Shard of the Scorned - A game of monsters
« on: December 19, 2018, 12:00:55 pm »
When the world was young, the Five stepped forth upon its face. They shaped it, transformed it, creating sea and sky and life itself. Everything they touched was perfection, and the world was a paradise. But from outside the world, jealous things watched. And one entered the world. None know its name, for it a creature beyond any understanding. When it is spoken of, it is called the Scorned. It terrified even the Five, and struck each of them mortal blows. Still, they fought, desperate to save their creation, even as this being’s mere presence corrupted them.

The battle lasted for eons, but it was over in a heartbeat. The Five forced the Scorned into the sky, and then threw it deep into the earth, shattering the land for miles in every direction. Seas dried up. Mountains shattered. Forests turned to ash. The stones of the land warped under the titanic force of the impact. But the Five thought this price worth paying. The Scorned was sealed away in the heart of the world, and their creation was saved.

But the Five looked upon the world, and found it wanting. The Scorned had wreaked havoc, upon the world and the Five. Where once they saw perfection, now there found ruin and desolation. The Five debated and argued among themselves, nearly turning against each other. They debated what should be done. Should they abandon the world? Start anew? Repair the damage? Eventually a compromise was reached They would create stewards to repair the world, and return to truly make it a paradise once more. The Five would set about creating other worlds and other paradises while they waited.

Thus the Men, Dwarves, Elves, Dragons, and Beastkin were created, the last and youngest of the creations of the Five. And they proved mightier than the others, for they were empowered beyond any other creature of the Five, granted souls full of vitality and spirits full of strength. And slowly that which was broken in the world began to be repaired.

But the Scorned still lurked within the core of the world, and it still desired to tear the creations of the Five asunder. It struggled against its bonds, and threw itself against the walls of its prison. While its efforts seemed futile, pieces of itself began to break off. These pieces, called Shards, floated up, finding cracks and gaps and weaknesses. The Shards began to make monsters, and these monsters fought the creatures of the Five, taking on many forms. And no matter how many died, the monsters kept coming. For the Shards did not become the monsters. They found places to hide, and took the souls and spirits of living things to make their servants.

The mightiest could even manifest and personally ruin the creations of the Five. Their names are whispered in stories and screamed in nightmares. Their sleep troubles kingdoms, their waking shatters empires. But even they started as nothing but a Shard with potential.

One such fragment of the Scorned drifts up, finding shelter in…

A.   A dried-up well in the middle of the desert
B.   A grove of dying trees in a forest
C.   A shattered castle atop a mountain
D.   Another desolate location

And it called itself…

The Legions are mighty. The Legions are unstoppable. World after world has fallen to them, corrupted from within or assailed from without until all were dead or served the Legion. There was not a single force that could withstand them. It was glorious. You were one of the mightiest generals. Your dark magic consumed the souls of thousands at a time, your lethal blades and claws tore the life from hundreds at a stroke. Not even the ancient dragon-kings of Balas could slow you, nor the mentalists of the Endless Gyre make you hesitate. And even when you did not persoanally take part in the conquests, you were still the architect of much glory. You watched as Delicious horrors were unleashed upon helpless populaces and nations broke with despair as they witnessed the depredations of demonic armies. Other greatt conquerors were rewarded…Bephagor the Devouring. Krnlgn the All-Knowing. Nrgln the Widowmaker. But you, you were first and foremost. Even they feared your name. Even they only spoke of…this accursed magic! It robs you of all your power! With a struggle, you manage to recollect your name.

But the courts of the Legion are a deadly thing, made as they are of thousands of quarreling true demons. Some rival found a long forgotten secret of yours, and trumpeted it to the others. You were stripped of title, of power, and brought before the Mightiest of All to be sentenced. They saw an opportunity for further cruelty, and did not kill you. Instead, they tore away all but a sliver of your might. You managed to keep a little extra of your strength of...
Arms

Body

Mind

Magic
though, and so you had that secret defiance to enjoy as you were dragged to the Font of Worlds and forced to pick a world, distant, and untouched, for now. You were not allowed to see the world, and you were instead forced to pick from a bag of stones. You drew a stone of…

Emerald green

Darkest black

Brightest white

Brown. Ordinary brown.

Gray.

Some other color…

This was a test, one you knew you were destined to fail. No demon on their own had ever conquered an entire world...but you would. You will triumph. One day, you will no longer be exiled...

Hey,

So I had an idea for what I thought might be a fun community/succession fortress, preferably with masterwork or fortress defense. The idea is, up until a certain point( say 6 months after the fortress becomes the Mountainhome), the fortress is entirely ordinary. After that point, the circus should be released, all the drawbridges lowered, cages opened, and sieges summoned, turning the fortress into a charnel pit. The goal is to manage to protect enough dwarves that they can slowly regain control of the fort.

I do have some rules in mind, like setting a maximum of impregnable panic rooms, and requiring whatever section of the fort has coffins to be left vulnerable, but I want to see if there is any interest in this first.

This is meant to be similar to the Designing the Titan's Drifter. However, instead of being a spaceship in a sci-fi universe, this is a massive, ancient, flying ship thing in a fantasy universe.

Rules:

Please don't contradict anyone massively

Please focus your posts on one aspect

I'll start: The ship has a living dragon claw embedded in the wall of one cargo hold. No one knows where the rest of the dragon is, but the crew is careful to stay away, as it occasionally lashes around.

Beyond the Ridgeblood Mountains, legends tell of an ancient cathedral, now ruined. What dangers lie within? What treasures?

Rules:
Minimal repetition
Each post must contain a danger and a treasure- does not have to be actual treasure, just some sort of draw

There are several animate statues that will attack any who enter.
Each statue is made with valuable metals, and decorated with gems.

This is similar to a create a setting game, but instead the idea is you create new areas in a standard fantasy setting like Greyhawk or Golarion.

The town of Leen was once a great city, but now is a shadow of itself, surrounded by haunted ruins.

The great fortress stood in a narrow mountain pass. Legions of men, elves, and dwarves manned the walls, while griffons soared above. A lone rider galloped to the gate. He was wounded, his sheathe empty, his shield gone. The messenger let out a cry. The orcish armies were coming. His message proved fairly unneeded, for as soon as he announced it, the orcs arrived. There must have been thousands, rank upon rank of infantry. Ogres and giants and trolls lumbered along side, and dozens of ramshackle catapults and scorpions rolled along at the rear. Warg-riders whooped and called as they marched forwards, and wyverns circled, occasionally diving down above the heads of the orcs.

((What happens next? Up to you!))

In the 73rd century, mankind has spread across the stars, finding and colonizing new worlds, discovering ancient technology, and building great fleets. As the human empire expanded, many intrepid explorers set forth. One of these groups, in the S.S. Unstoppable, discovered a planet. This planet once had a colony, but it had been wiped out.  For this was an extremely deadly planet, where it seemed every life form could kill humans. The explorers catalogued all the flora and fauna. This is the catalogue.

This is sort of a let's create a setting, with the theme of dangerous. But survivable. And try to be creative.

There are vast deserts on the surface of the world where the sand is whipped into vicious storms that flay the skin from most denizens not from them.
