DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Engraving built walls
« on: January 07, 2014, 11:44:52 am »
I know that it's impossible to engrave built walls, at least in vanilla. Is there any way to mod the raws to allow this or is it hard-coded?

Other Games / [DnD 3.5]
« on: July 12, 2013, 10:05:06 pm »
My friends and I play a relaxed version of DnD 3.5 and I'm our GM. I'm making a world map (I used the DF fantasy map maker, check it out) and I need names for human towns and elven cities. Maybe even some orc/other evil town names. For dwarves I'm using DF's names.

Creative Projects / [Contest] A quick drawing contest
« on: July 01, 2013, 11:25:11 am »
Hey Bay12 artists! I DM for a group of friends and I when we play DnD. I want to do a Castaway-island-like seesion sometime in the future. I like to have a drawing to kick of sessions so we know what we're looking for/where we are. The world we use looks like this:

Imagine a continent, now raise it up so its surface is floating about 5 miles above the rest of the planet (so now we have a giant, floating island.) The continent is on average 1 to 1 and 1/2 miles thick. At one point a spire (that is maybe a half mile in diameter near the center) connects the bottom of the continent to the ocean below and around this spire is and island.

This island is where the players will be marooned.

The Contest? To draw a picture (color or not, I don't care) of this island and the spire connecting it to the floating continent.

Have at it folks!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Heat-Resisting Dog [Spoliers?]
« on: June 21, 2013, 09:08:34 pm »
I released the HFS becuase everything was falling apart anyways. As I watched my Fortress succumb to the Demons one came face-to-face with a dog outside my walls. It then started blast the dog with fire. Only, it never lit on fire. Its been doing this for nearly 5 in-game months now. The dog is completely un-harmed.

Has anyone seen this happen before?

DF Community Games & Stories / [STORY] The Horror's Behind The Wall
« on: June 05, 2013, 12:35:11 pm »
I wrote this while I was sick and bored. I hope you like It. Comments? Suggestions?
==============================================================================================================

When Fikod checked into his job at the mines they gave him a mug of ale along with his slip telling him his assignment for the day. Fikod didn’t need the slip, the ale was enough to tell him. He would be working in the deep mines today.

As I walked down the stairs to the deep mines today I saw a friend of mine. We call him BigE. We call him that for a reason. At about 5 foot 2inches in human measurements, he’s probably the biggest miner here. With big burly arms he can mine through solid stone for hours without breaking a sweat and still have the strength to crush the life out of you when he gives you one of his friendly greeting hugs.
“you working in the deep mines today?” I asked him.
“yeah, section 3. how ‘bout you?”
   “nope I’m in section 2“
“Ahhh. Heard they found some Adamintine there a couple days ago”
I was shocked. No one had found adamintine in months in the mines. this was a breakthrough.
“I guess they heard ‘bout your skills with an axe, Fikod. Maybe their expectin’ trouble”
With this comment we reached the deep mines. These mines really aren’t that different than those above. These just had an extra layer of security in case of... well, we don’t talk about it. I loosened my axe in its sheath on my back. The depths give me the willies. I said bye to BigE and began to move towards section 2. I got orders from the mine overseer and began to dig.
Stone.stone.stone.stone.stone.stone.stone. Copper ore, tell the haulers.stone.stone.stone. Break for lunch, grab a bite of plump helmet and a swig of ale. stone.stone.stone.stone. blue stone.more blue stone. looks like met--- ADAMINTINE. I alert the overseer immediately. An elite team (including myself) begin to careful remove the precious metal from the stone, careful in case we breach it. This continues until quiting time. Just before I head for the stairs I notice a note engraved on the wall

“stick around, work overtime. Smooth when read
               signed,
               don’t try to find me

I smooth out the note and go to the office to ask for overtime. I continue to mine out the Adamintine during the night shift. During the midnight lunch break I was eating next to where we we’re working and I noticed a small crack in the Adamintine. Looking closer I saw a claw slip through and begin to widen the crack. A voice behind me says

“Better fill that up dwarf, don’t want anything to break through”
I whirl around expecting to see the mysterious engraver of the note but no ones there...

Behind me the crack was widening steadily. From the gap I began to hear whispers in a language that none but the dammed could understand. I now understood that behind that thin wall of adamintine lie that which none had seen and lived, and it was about to be unleashed. I yelled for the guards and the night shift overseer. upon hearing my yells what ever was behind the wall began working furiously. I realized that the others would come to late. Through the gap came a hand. It was gnarled, clawed, pale, and I was sure It could rip me apart. Then, I had an idea. I didn’t know if it would work but... I had to try. I looked down at my pickaxe.....

I sipped my ale as I watched the architects check the seals on the wall in the deep mines. This permanent seal of masterful dwarven engineering would hopefully be able to hold back the untold horrors we had awoken. I looked down at my pickaxe, passed down through my family for generations. All that was left was the haft. The head was embedded in a gap in the adamintine now sealed off by 300 ft of a lead and gold alloy with a cap of pure adamintine that took 3 sleepless days to construct. As feasts and were thrown to celebrate the working of the adamintine and its eventual use against the elves, I was trying to figure out what I should do for work next. I looked at the section of wall that I had smoothed out to hide the note. “I have somebody to find” I said to myself.

DF Community Games & Stories / [story] A Miner's New Pick
« on: June 01, 2013, 09:32:54 am »
My friends and I are going to do a DnD session soon so out DM asked us all to make our own backstories. I decided to expand mine a little and post a story here on the forums. Names are made with DF's name generator.

I’m  Fikod PracticedDrinks, I’m a miner. Well, I was a miner until my iron pick broke. Seriously! no ones ever broken a COPPER pick and I go and bust my only iron one. That put me out of work, so, now i wield my steel battle axe, a gift form my grandmother, and get paid guiding caravans to some very exotic locations. But after seeing the world and nearly getting my foot ripped off by a Giant Skeletal Bat I decided it was time for me to go back to mining. First I needed a pick, I had saved up enough to buy a +steel pick+ but while I was at the market I saw this on a poster:

The Elves have discovered a new metal they call Mithril!
One elf has forged a pick of this mighty metal!
Defeat him in single combat to win this prize!
The tournament is TODAY!

While the constant use of exclamation marks was annoying i decided to enter the tournament. I was third in line to fight this elf who they called  Imere Macamepari.
The first contestant was a human who I fully expected to win, big, muscular, generally the prime example of their race. But when the fight began the elf speed prevailed as he beat the human unconscious with his little wooden sword.
The next contestant was a human woman. She almost matched the speed of the elf and they exchanged blows for about 30 seconds. Then the elf scored a hit and the result was the same. I was up next.
As I entered the arena I heard the cheers of my fellow dwarves. They new my reputation as a caravan guard and they knew how man elves had challenged me and lost. However, I would not kill this elf. His skill in smithing was to be respected and we do not kill smiths without good reason. Besides, he was not aiming to kill either.
So the fight began, knowing my short legs would mean I could not match his speed, the elf leaped at me and swung a blow at me chest. I easily blocked it with the flat of my axe. It was my turn next. I swung a blow which, If he was still there, would’ve knocked him into the wall. However, with extraordinary quickness he jumped away. The fight went on like this for minutes. The crowd was riveted, expecting a mistake at any time. Then, that mistake came. As I stepped back my foot slipped in a puddle of split beer. As I went to one knee to steady myself the elf swung a mighty blow to my head, I raised my axe up to ward off the blow but the sword kept coming, right into the finely honed edge of my blade. the sword was cut clean in two and, surprised by his lack of weapon, the elf dropped what was left of his sword. Looking at me and expecting death, I surprised him further by just tapping his chest with my axe and saying “dead.” I had won a new pickaxe.
