moved from fortress discussion to general discussion. it's more appropriate there.

Insofar that languages are living entities and their use/meaning is defined by how they are actually used in the real world (yes i'm a descriptivist), I argue that the correct model of dwarven language already exists - it's that used by Simon Swerwer, who is basically the only person alive who produces any content in Dwarven.

Check the lyrics of his songs (link here to my favorite). Most of them are sung with meaningful dwarven lyrics. Pronunciation is clear, grammar is applied.

His song "KoganUsan" ("BoatMurdered") is even in the base game soundtrack. In short - a very strong argument his work is canon, and thus this is both the described and prescribed form of dwarven language. It's fully legitimate.

What do you think? Is this enough to go off of?

DF General Discussion / Do you prefer modern DF, or 23a?
« on: August 26, 2023, 09:32:24 pm »
For those that haven't played it, 23a is the version that Boatmurdered was played in.

To me, personally, I think i prefer 23a. Modern DF has a lot of graphics, but it also has a lot of bloat ... and deprecated systems. 23a at least feels like a cohesively designed game, and most of all, I think it best captures the "fantasy" element of DF through its entirely unsurpassed use of scripted events and flavor elements - things like bodyguards following the tax collector, the king's mandates to dig farther into the mountain, the popups about seasonal flooding - migrants arriving with your first anvil, pouring magma into the chasm, frogmen spawning from wells - the notice of "the cries of the fortress you abandoned are no longer able to be heard" when you scroll too far off screen - i even think useless nobles were a good game element. it added a lot to the RP. I understand why the economy had to be removed, but all the same I liked it and the useless dungeon master as well.

What do you think? Do you prefer this version to that old version?

just... wow.

any thoughts on this? I knew the steam community was going to be a bit of a culture shock, but damned if these guys don't seem like they'd like to SWAT somebody

I know, I know, "just ignore the trolls", but still. Yikes.

It's amazing how many people seem to be demanding a right to treat zach and tarn like trash

DF General Discussion / What kind of rig does Toady run?

Does anyone know? I'd imagine it'd have to be pretty vigorous to handle all the DF work he does on it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / No caravans after unretiring?
« on: July 26, 2015, 11:58:53 am »
There seems to be some problem with receiving caravans or migrants upon unretiring a fortress. I've done this about three times to the same fortress and I've got nothing. Before I retired the first time I was getting caravans and migrants, and I think I got migrants on the first unretiring, but there was never an outpost liaison. I'm not sure if that's relevant. Does anyone know what's happening?

Does removing upward ramps on mushrooms cause them to collapse?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves falling down stairs
« on: July 31, 2014, 07:40:15 pm »
Like many others, I tend to design my fortresses around large, central staircases. However, as of late I've begun noticing strange spatters of blood in areas with no combatants and combat reports consisting entirely of "dwarf takes the full force of the impact through their shirt." Are my dwarves tripping down the stairs?
