Forum Games and Roleplaying / Zombie Survival!

"This is an emergency broadcast. Please continue to listen for updates and information." A radio in the corner of the room is on low volume. You have all been sitting here for only a little while after the siren started. It was supposed to be a warning the virus has hit the city, but hell did that ever go off late..

The ten of you were being escorted out of the city, sitting in the back of army truck when it happened. The driver began flailing wildly in his seat belt and vomiting blood onto the windshield. The damn soldiers were supposed to be screened before they were sent into population centres, but obviously the government failed at that too. The soldier riding shotgun was already being choked and bit, that sure didn't help stop the truck from driving down into a fountain. With the rest of the convoy pulling over to correct the situation, it was clear everyone was in the same boat. "Everyone out!" The soldiers yelled and threw you into the water and everyone scrambled and sprinted for the nearest building. Some overly fancy ten storey building with far to many steps leading to the entrance. One of you hit the elevator switch in a panic as a soldier read the floor plan. Looking back onto the street you could see several people flailing on the ground wildly. "Stairs! Go!" the soldier yelled and pointed just as a bloody mess flew into his arm and collided with him, knocking him with a thud into the wall. The last soldier with you began opening fire as several more came out of the stairwell. With the ding of the elevator you all piled in. Someone hit the close door button as the soldier kept firing between the closing doors. They closed and soon you were traveling to the tenth floor. Elevator music played as everyone panted trying to catch their breath.. and with another ding you arrived. No key.. You forced your way into the pent house suite. You all walked in cautiously. Soon after the suite was cleared the siren went off.

You all look around unsure of what to do, everyone seems uneasy, including the soldier. You take note of the room you're sitting in. Modern style, luxurious condo. From clearing the rooms it's known to have three bedrooms, a large kitchen, one and a half bathrooms, along with the main living room you're all currently sitting in.

Is anyone interested in directing a group of people at the brink of a zombie out break?
The game play will be by most agreed upon actions controlling the group, though you may name characters and control others in the main group but it will not be a character progression type game. For reference check out how the Firestar spaceship game was played.

Please vote for the below stuff and then with interest I'll write up the actual thread!

Zombie
1. a) Slow Horde
    b) Running Infected

Settings
2. a) Large City (Pop >500 000)
    b) Small City (Pop ~ 100 000)
    c) Town (Pop ~20000)

Starting Group
3. a) Small (5-10)
    b) Medium (~30)
    c) Large (~75) (not everyone will make it)

DF Suggestions / World saves - file name
« on: December 30, 2012, 05:11:41 pm »
Like many I gen multiple worlds in search of an embark site. I save worlds if I think they may be of interest and rename them with the possible embark location. Then with my two copies I embark in one. The problem comes when I begin making more worlds after a fruitless session of world generation, I tend to lose track of which ones are which, being that they are all named regionX. Then the ones I have selected and renamed are replaced by regionX (and hell if I remember which ones I selected).
Currently I keep a .txt open and just jot down stuff to keep track, it's a kinda inconvenient.

Would anyone else be for or opposed to having folders saved by their translated world names? I mean its a quick fix for Toady to change what new worlds are saved under.

With that you would know which folder contains which world. If you move folders around you know that the World of Amazing is not the World of Imagination. Anyways small suggestion I feel would be a nice change.

Creative Projects / Working on a game. Need help fleshing out theme.
« on: June 16, 2012, 02:23:32 pm »
Alright, I'll explain a little bit. I just have the basic display and engine stuff done around it.
I can't decide which direction to go though.. It will have deep ship design and customization, such as Aurora but without the complications and more streamlining, and probably a tutorial. I have a large amount of free time while on my co-op term and figure I will be productive.

The two choices are:

Realistic sci-fi like Aurora found on our forums and based around realistic solar systems.

Or a more retro style like Shellcore Command based on a fictitious universe, based around collection and havesting energies of different colours. Weapons based on realistic counter-parts. The energies would replace the resources of aurora, and be less complicated.

So thats the two themes, both would have expansive universes, that I hope feel large. The retro style would allow more RTS feeling and stuff, space would mostly be called the "Void" or something.
Both games would have similar gameplay style, fast-paced combat, but when no battlefields active you could skip through time while researching or sending ships on journies. I also plan to allow you to control a single ship, from deathstars, to battlecruisers to the basic fighter.

Anyways I would appreciate input, new ideas, new styles?

Above is the crapy basic triangular fighter. Particle effects(engine thrust/explosions) will most likely be added, and probably a thicker,  tapered or glowing outline, depends on which theme I go with. The ships would be heavily based around shapes among other things. Hence I lean toward retro.. but realistic sci-fi is more.. real.

In the retro world, planets would be replaced with habital "octagonal platforms". Basically if you have read flatlands its kind of like that? Eitherway I need to flesh out the ideas and build around them so I decide which way to program. Im currently just working on docking and flight paths of ships. Next up may be formations or maybe solar systems(or whatever would be equal in a different style).

Thanks in advance of any criticism.

Creative Projects / School Project (Need ideas for Lego Mindstorms)
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:31:12 pm »
Hello. I never post over here but I know Bay12 is insanely creative, so when assigned the project I figured I should venture over here to the Creative Projects sub-forum. I'm currently in my second term at university for mechanical engineering, and in my intro to computer science class we have been assigned a project. It basically consists of building and programming a robot using Lego Mindstorms.

Background on the project,
The controller has three motor outputs, each with the ability to return shaft encoder information.
The controller has four sensor inputs. Sensors available are,
Colour Sensor (Returns seeing the colours BGYOR, Black and White, or intensity)
Sonic Sensor (Returns distance to an object in cm, 2m range)
Bump Sensor (Pressed or not)

Now I'm not asking for blueprints, but just general ideas, what sensor we can take advantage of or how it may be used. Another member and I have substantial programming experience (recursion, best choice algorithms, advanced sorting) and we want something challenging (unlike the mandatory cs class). We also have two other members.

Idea 1. Is a CNC like robot. It will have a colour sensor hanging where the normal machining spindle would be and solves mazes drawn by the class.

Idea 2. Is a turret robot. It would detect people walking by, track, match speed and shoot elastics at it.

Thanks for any idea you may generate!

Spoiler: GM (click to show/hide)

You come to life with a wurr of electrons moving in your minuscule circuits. You consist of a small chassis and legs for movement. You have tiny manipulators on your front capable of almost any manipulation in its reach. You have basic programming, you can scan, dig, manipulate and access your thought algorithms. You have not explored anything and no nothing of yourself, other then you exist.

With a scan of the surroundings you determine you are sitting on a metallic surface of steel. You are in a tunnel. The surrounding area is covered in dust, the light is low. To the tunnel end it is brighter, to the other it is pitch black. You are not sure what to do, but you feel an urge to replicate..

Life Advice / Mech Eng vs Comp Sci
« on: May 12, 2011, 08:23:48 pm »
Hello everyone,
I post once in a while, run or participate in a forum game or two, talk in suggestions when a topic strikes me.
Anyways I am hear asking for advice. I am 18 and soon off to university, I have been accepted into two programs at the University of Waterloo, and they are as the title says, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science.
I am curious if any of you work in the aforementioned fields or ones very close too, if you could give me insights into the job availability, what you do? if you are currently studying the programs what is the likelihood to get a co-op job?
If you have no relation to the field I would still appreciate any comments.

DF General Discussion / Autoback up?
« on: December 22, 2010, 09:45:50 pm »
I tried searching this but found no results on the forum, so here I am. Recently I have had a corrupt save and I can't seem to find the backups? AUTOBACKUP is set to YES. I looked around and have had no success at all. I am starting to believe they were never backed-up. So I ask what folder would they be saved in normally?

Creative Projects / Need help with art for a new game
« on: December 15, 2010, 09:24:56 pm »
Hello, I'm a long time forum goer, odd comment here and there. Over the years Ive seen quiet a few good artists post in the various boards and was wondering if someone would be willing to draw me and my friends some art.

We are making a game based in medieval times, so that would be swords, magic, alchemy among others. To create the game we obviously need some artistic talent which none of us geeks have. That is why I am here now requesting the great help of the dwarf fortress community.

We need a list of things which include:
~A main page screen, a 800x600 pixel picture of a castle or battle of a dragon,
or anything that's awesome and fun, preferably well done, any style, we are open to all.

~Also various pictures/sprites with dimensions 32x32 pixels of things any object like swords, axes,
arrows, armors, fruits, hammers and not to mention landscape, such as cliff-sides, tall grasses,
  water, fire, glowing orbs.

~We also need pictures of varying sized creatures ranging from centaurs to dragons to rabbits,
the size can range from 32x32 pixels, 64x64 to 128x128(reserved for giant creatures).
For the creatures we would need the creature in several frames of its walk in the four directions of
north/s/e/west. For an obviously quick creatures we would need only two to three frames, for slow lumbering
creatures five or more, that is entirely dependent on the step. Also the angle the picture would be
from is at a 45 degree angle from the horizontal the point of view is coming from the direct
  south/bottom(yes like pokemon..).

Either way have fun, you can creature your own creatures and give it a name(we wont necessarily use that name) if you would like mention on the website when we put it up and the game reaches alpha please leave your name, I will mostly have a running list in here of the names of peoples work I use.

For reference to what we are looking for google the game "secret of mana". If someone would like to join the team pm me.
Thank you to anyone who contributes.

~Setting~
In the vast expanse of space, in the future where smuggling, asteroid mining and large space battles are normal. Long distance travel is done by warp drives using energy bursts to bend the fabric of space. Thrusters or Impulse drive are used to travel and maneuver small distances. Weapons include but definitely are not limited to missiles, rail guns, chain cannons and lasers. Ships are protected by energy shields or metal alloy armors. Energy comes from either a combustion generator, cold fusion reactor or a SRVC(space-rift vacuum cell) which draws energy from a man-made rift in space!

~Rules and Others~

I recently watched this and knowing the kinda of people on here I figured if you havent heard of this video yet you would probably like to so here you go.

Its a video called loose change that shows and proves many points that 9/11 was a conspiracy or the incident goes against the law of physics... Just watch it then comment. Either way I think all of you should watch it since I'm pretty sure alot of the people here including toady are American.

WATCH then comment..

DF Gameplay Questions / Problems trying to grow Sun Berries (Answered)
« on: December 24, 2008, 10:26:39 pm »
As the title says. I bought these seeds off those elves. I have an outdoor plot. I have the seeds in my stockpile so they aren't tasked but it still wont let me select them for growing in any season.. Any ideas why it wont let me?

P.S If those damn elves ripped me off I'm gonna drop my fortress on their asses.
