DF Gameplay Questions / A question about climbers

As a semi-challenge and to explore some things I'm building a village; no digging, purely above-ground town surrounded by a large palisade wall. Speaking of the wall, I've left a large 3-tile-wide area for caravans open. If I leave that open as an obvious entrance, will climbing invaders still try to scale the walls? Or will they prioritize the opening?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tundra Temperature Question

Hey everyone!

So recently I've been looking at embarking into a tundra. I know low temperature can cause frostbite, but I'm wondering if this is an effect of exposure. Basically, if I build a completely sealed (save for a door) above-ground room, is that room subject to the same temperature as the surrounding area? Or does it become safe for dwarves to linger there?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / A few noob questions

After years of playing fortress mode, I decided to try my hand at adventurer mode, thinking to myself "how hard can it be?".

About an hour after trying to put down a God-damned +wooden chest+ I knew.

Anyways, I played a few hours, and I have a few questions I'd like answered:
  • I entered a town, and there was, like, a million cats. Is that normal?
  • Those must be the world's most incompetent cats, because every step I would take the screen would be inundated with messages along the lines of "cat bumped into cat". Is there a way to tone down those messages, or limit them to those related to me and my companions?
  • So I was hoping to trade some King Cobra parts for other food and/or money. In the trade screen, I saw numbers to the right of every item, next to a symbol that looked like a 7. Is that the value of the item? If I have 5 of that item, is it the value per item or for the stack?
  • Similar to above, unlike in fort mode I wouldn't see the current value of goods exchanged is that normal?
  • Nevermind, quick trip to the wiki answered the above two questions.
  • Any general tips on trading in general?
  • I ate king cobra meat. Will I die? Is there a way of cooking meat before ingesting it?
  • I was holding a mace in my left hand and a shield in my right. Unfortunately, this is an aberration. Is there a way to switch hands for holding stuff?
  • At the bottom of my screen, I see W: and A:. I assumed it meant which weapon and armor I had, but it's not accurate since I had two weapons and many pieces of armor. Is this correct?

DF Gameplay Questions / Question about room sizes and walls/windows.

I have a question regarding rooms. Suppose I have a trapped creature in a cage, and I designate a large area to be a zoo. If I subsequently surround the creature with walls or windows, would the room still extend past those walls? Or would it be "resized" to be contained within the walls?

Before walls, where X is the room area:

I know the room area still goes over the walls, but does the room *actually* extend beyond?

Hi everyone,

I've searched on the forums but I couldn't find a solution to this particular problem.

So I was attacked by a werechinchilla (yeah...) and two of my dwarves were bitten. I've isolated them and placed them in quarantine, with enough food and drink for about two years. I've waited a season, but they haven't turned. How long should I wait before I know whether or not they are safe? How long should they remain in quarantine before I know whether or not they are infected?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Isolation Chamber Food Chute

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum so please tell me if I posted this in the wrong place.

One of my dorfs did something unforgivable (punted a kitten off a cliff), and so I want to lock him up forever. I have a 3x3 room digged out, and a door leading to it which I would set as locked. I want to somehow dump water (or booze) from a floor above for him to not die. Is there a way to channel a hole above and manually dump some food/booze down (or something similar)?
