The chessboard one is about the fact that there are 32 pieces on a chessboard at the start of the game (16 pawns, 4 rooks, 4 knights, 4 bishops, 2 queens and 2 kings). However, this would show up as 40?, so while making sense, it's still wrong.

Lake called the Seasonal Lakes of Gravel, a freezing ocean called the Enjoyable Storm-Ocean. A fittingly-named Terrifying tundra: the Frosts of Skinning. The Kingly Crests, containing four dwarf civs' mountainhomes. A stream called the Motherly Wall. Tiny desert called the Dune of Anvils. Stream Incesthouse in the Hill of Palaces. Brook Millfill in the Pregnant Mire. I could go on and on about this world's features. Also, a while back, I had a fortress called Chanberwilt, fittingly killed by starvation.

That's actually pretty interesting. Didn't know that sea serpents could become histfigs, because there's nothing notable in the water to kill. But obviously, the game's reaction to any creature becoming a histfig is to give it a land-based lair. Poor serpent.
I was using Masterwork, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it....

Adventurer mode, had a task very early on to kill a sea serpent. Unfraid, I ventured north, ready to kill or to die. So I go to the lair, take one step...
