DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Going down?
« on: April 05, 2010, 03:32:47 am »
I'm currently constructing a big spiral ramp for wagons to go down so that I spend less time taking stuff to the depot.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Where did my space key go?

Is there any way to assign BOTH space and escape to do it?

Most menus I'm used to using space, but on some I keep trying to escape out until I realize I have to use space.

Create a system that pumps a small amount of water directly into the top middle of a deep magma vent, creating an island of obsidian. Channel out the middle squares and repeat the process until you can build a fort that is completely surrounded on all sides, including above, with magma.

In the last location I started at there was a vein of petrified wood in the middle of a chalk layer. I could give you the location if you want, it's decent but not perfect.

If it's going to be PERFECT, I want all of those, access to all 4 civs, a decent sized cliff so I have extra z-levels to access, the water source should be a river, and in the best case scenario it freezes in the winter.

I have this dream of making a legendary dining hall under a river with a glass ceiling so my dwarves can watch fish go by while they eat.

Oh, and zombie wildlife to make things interesting.

Looking for somewhere to start over because I dug "too deep" and one thing led to another.

Mine out the bottom of the river, replace it with a big glass floor. Then move your dining room under the glass.

Each season usually takes me anywhere from an hour to three depending on how much micromanagement I do.

Some of us just have the tendency to lose track of time and play till 3 in the monring. "come on, just need to find that magma vent and I'll go to bed..."   :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What stays from fortress to adventure mode
« on: March 25, 2008, 05:52:00 pm »
One time my fortress got wiped out by a Bronze Colossus. I immediately tried to explore it in adventure mode to read details about my engravings, and when I tried to go into the huge dining hall where the lions share of my history is recorded, the Colossus had apparently decided that was his new home. He rambled off a little spiel about all the dwarves he had killed and proceeded to tear me in two.

Working my way up to the dining room, though, I noticed a ton of the stuff from my fortress lying around.

I'm noticing a lot of missing words, especially in the thought profiles. I've lost count of "xxxxx has admired  own fine bed recently"

I drafted a woodcutter to kill some zombie mountain goats that were getting a bit too close. He went to the weapon and armor stockpile with a job like "getting equipment", then he'd walk about 15 steps away and turn around and do it again. I watched him do that for about 15 cycles and then just undrafted him and let him go back to cutting trees.

In my experience, there's no way for two dwarves to share a bed unless they're willingly shacking up.

Expect a child.

Maybe an exchange program, where one of your dwarves lives with the caravan for a year to see the world and you get one of their guards for the year.

DF Suggestions / One Way Traffic
« on: December 02, 2007, 07:43:00 pm »
After watching several of my dwarves walk over each other in my 4-wide hallway while half of it remains unused, even after trying to set up traffic designations,  I came up with an idea. These would be placed like normal traffic designations but with a direction. The direction the arrow on the tile would point would be the intended direction, to allow dwarves to cross through these areas to get to side corridors, travel will be allowed in all directions except OPPOSITE the direction the arrow is pointing. This way, you could have East to West traffic on the north side of the corridor and West to East traffic on the south side, and any dwarf could turn off into a side corridor in any direction if needed.

Sorry if this suggestion has already been made.
