DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What year are you in?
« on: January 12, 2007, 01:15:00 am »
1062.

It's become a recurring cycle of siege, steam, cleanup. The constant source of iron is pretty nice; still, I'm getting tired of the amount of time it takes to chasm all the leather and cloth.

I'm slowly building up to face off against the demons, which will involve making a ton of steel equipment and going through getting my military to put it on/wield it/etc.

I'll also note that it's my first fort, which seems to be a rarity, I do tend to take things extremely slowly/cautiously, which is why I've been able to take my first fort to the 200+ dwarf range; however, this also means that the fort is horribly designed and has all kinds of weird quirks and problems.

If you want them out of the way, you can cage them. Make a cage and then build it, then [q] over it to assign animals to it. My current fort has a single cage with ~150 horses and cows crammed inside.

I suspect it's just the most recent official upgrade, I haven't installed any mods and I noticed a gigantic jump in game speed when I upgraded to the newest version.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Don't get rid of that smelter
« on: October 07, 2006, 06:50:00 pm »
If you say, make steel bars in a smelter, start production of a lava smelter and then destroy the regular smelter midway through the process, the dwarves will suddenly not be able to make the lava smelter because they don't have those steel bars anymore.

Who knows where those bars went, in fact. I've checked my bar/block plot and it's completely barren.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Stone stockpiles

I'm actually slogging through the PA thread on DF right now and there's a couple people on there who seem to think that never declearing a stone stockpile and just having your masons and mechanics going full-steam will do a good job of clearing out stone and that having it just lying around isn't that bad.

I have so many things to try out on my next fortress, I can't bear to stop going with my original one though, I want to see how things finally fall apart.

Also: Sup Mr. Sweeper.

I figured that was probably the way to go, moving stuff inside would be too much work at this point; however, I'm not too torn apart about it because this is my first fort and as such it's horribly-designed in terms of defense and is probably going to get wiped out from the first outside threat.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stone stockpiles
« on: September 29, 2006, 04:27:00 pm »
What do you more experienced players do with your stone stockpiles? I have a fortress with less than 100 dwarves and my stone pile stretches all the way from the cliff to the river and down for quite a bit. The amount of time it takes for dwarves to haul stone from deep inside the fort to the pile is taking up quite a bit of time.

Is there a better way to do this?

Recovering from a hydra attack and considering abandoning because of the amount of tantruming dwarves ripping the fort apart (also, there's no sand, no permanent water source and no metal aside from silver in the region I chose, so I might want to just start over anyway).

DF Gameplay Questions / Building a Moat
« on: October 07, 2006, 06:54:00 pm »
I'm a little confused as to how to build a moat. Obviously I've got farm-style floodgate(s) set up to draw in the water; what do I need to do after that?

Do I need channels everywhere I want the moat to be? Do I build channels to stop the moat from spreading?

Presuming that I want water to be where every square is marked 'a' and not where it's marked 'b', where do I place my channels?

Nevermind, I figured it out, you have to smooth the walls first.

Lesson, as always: read the wiki first.

DF Gameplay Questions / Fortifications
« on: September 30, 2006, 02:28:00 pm »
I just tried to carve some fortifcations, and nothing seems to be happening. I selected the wall where I wanted them to go and nothing appeared to indicate that the wall had been selected for carving and no job appeared in the job list.

Are there special rules pertaining to where you can carve fortifications?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Making dwarves pick the best equipment?

Bringing this topic back from the dead to ask how you get dwarves to wield better weapons. I've just lucked into a legendary weaponsmith, so I'm cranking out the steel shortswords (three-bar at worst), yet they're all going into the weapon stockpile and rotting there, along with my new steel crossbows.

Trading with the caravans also makes it easier to constantly be churning out complex meals, since it brings in a great deal of varied ingredients, although I do only ask for booze from the humans.

I've also run into the surplus food situation and have reacted to it by tweaking my farming so that I now grow a lot of Pig Tails instead of foodstuffs. Then I have a ton of workshops and looms so that it gets converted into clothes. I've managed to have a 10+ year 200+ dwarf fort without any old clothing problems because of this, which was kind of a personal benchmark.

I know I should have searched under something other than "siege".

It might be related to the doors because I put my bridge down first and waited and there was no activity by the goblins. Maybe next time I'll unlock the front set of doors on my entryway and leave the rear ones locked, see what that does.
