DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Alternative Power Sources?
« on: August 07, 2023, 10:20:58 pm »
Hey all,

Outside of windmills and water wheels, as well as all the fancy things you can do with them..Are there any fancy power generation methods beyond those two?

Thanks  :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The big wait/steam release
« on: March 13, 2019, 11:23:42 am »
I think there’s a lot of potential bright sides, not worries about that. And yah, I guess if this is mostly aesthetic, then the changes shouldn’t take too long to incorporate (though they’ll definitely need to update the UI to keep up with similar Steam releases).

Also, some people called me crazy, just gonna put this here:

I thought the big wait was going to start almost a year ago with the demonstration announcements and whatnot. Long waits that weren’t called ‘the long wait’ have taken 2 years before.

I’m guessing 4 years +

But what’s nice with this, is Toady now makes mini releases much more frequently, so that’s nice and exciting in the meantime. Hopefully the long wait has a couple of those, otherwise like before, I’ll wait a year for mods to ramp up, and I’ll play those until the main release. (Looking at you Meph!)

My biggest concern is post long wait. I wonder if DF will still be the primary concern. My life has conditioned me to believing DF is a constant in our world, but idk, I get a feeling Toady might pick up something else after the long wait. Anyone else get that feeling at all?

As another bright side, I think it’s very good that we start getting more hands involved with DF anyhow, if emergencies happen, there’s probably very little time to take care of something this big and sophisticated. And it’s very nice they decided to get people on board who have been very involved with the community.

Wow, surprised to hear the very big news about the steam release. Hoping it does fantastic!
That being said, I can imagine this making the big wait become significantly slower.

I’m guessing the update process will need to be similar to how big mods do it now; the main release on bay12, followed by the mod release maybe 6 months later.

I’m guessing they’ll need to do the same thing for steam right? Just seems like waiting until after the big wait to release on steam might save a lot of trouble. Otherwise the steam release is really going to play catch up to incorporate significant game changes.

Thoughts on this, and future releases?

Certain titles though have a propensity to particular load outs right?

Like military units more likely to have military weapons, and peasants with peasant shanks.

I wonder if the title is tied to the load out, but the title is bugged making the load out nothinf

How does the game determine worn equipment for hearthpeople, soldiers and the likes?

Do certain ranks have equipment associations, and do certain ranks have a natural hostility to passerby’s?

It almost sounds like overlords are blank slate equipment load outs that attack onsite.

This thread sounds like a bunch of aliens trying to explain what flags are.

I just don’t like when other people patronize designed fortress or something you experience, when really they couldn’t do 1/10th of the stuff they say given vanilla.

(Tell them about how your doctor is doing something silly)
Criticizer- “Why is that guy whose given personality is your doctor...I would never etc”
(Can only do because therapist)

(Early necromancer siege)
Criticizer- “You lost your fort in an early siege? Your fort should be done by now”
(Can only do because fast dwarves)

“ As for mods: I can see the appeal, i just hate when people play with mods and then say "look what i did in dwarf fortress". its not TRUE DF if its with mods ;)

Ohhh man I hate that too!

I have a few friends that whenever I tell them something cool I did, they start bumbling on about how much more efficient they design...with dwarf therapist and mega fast super dwarves

Jerks

The "Whitebeards" group stereotype was based on people playing versions of DF that did not have so many multiracial forts. Today, some of us use the standard ASCII tiles, no mods (or slight fixes, like Orthoclase and Microcline being usable for porcelain), and spam the "accept petition" button.

Also I do not use DFhack unless absolutely necessary.

Wait what’s this about multiracial fort?

If whitebeard was a term used for people who ran forts as dwarf supremecists then I’m not sure it’s a good name lol...Just elves is fine.

Elves:
I say a lot of bad, but I usually just watch suspiciously. But in legacy forts, I’ll often be the first to cause elf trouble.

Mods: mostly Vanilla, but used to love masterwork and adding ‘super powers’ scripts to adventure mode.

Tileset: Vanilla, except when other tile sets cause confusing when passed to me

!FUN!: I don’t like you if you seal off your fort

So I’d say mostly whitebeard, though often over compensating in groups.
A white beard whose beard is not too long, so he carries a very big hammer to make up.

The post is ask you to categorize, and to best identify a category you would be a part of if you had to.

If you don’t want category that’s fine, but i don’t think that it  makes sense in this context

Make a new category for categoryless people! You’re very close, just give it name...

Hipsterbeard!

Hah! I like the names, but I feel like the Nobeard name inherently sound bad...or is that because I am a white beard, and my perceptions with the beard is making me think that way?....!

Also, that graph is super cool. Easy beardentification!

Shonai, I mean a person that can fix the bug, I would say you are more than dabbling techbeard!

I see people often branch into three group:

Group 1:
Those that want elves dead. Like the vanilla graphics. Like the clunky AI. Are sometimes snobby about the idea of how !FUN! they make the game for them self.

Group 2:

Those that see elves as a previously under developed group, and having been developed further, should be treated more fairly. Like to use several mods for more convenient gamplay. Think the abstraction of !FUN! more as a lack of existing features.

Group 3:

People who keep fix bugs and make mods.

If you had a name for these three groups, what would they be? Which group do you think you are most likely associated with, and what other groups have you noticed?
