Looking for an embark with:

Sand

Clay

Deep and shallow metals , preferably lots of magnetite / platinum / gold and other expensive metals

flux

Lots of gems

No aquifer

Don't care about rivers

Like an ultimate embark that has everything.

Not sure if it has both sand and clay, but I found a site in a large world that gives a river or brook, trees, lots of metals (iron, gold, platinum, and aluminum all either exposed or easily accessible, plus lots of our her goodies), coal, and a volcano. You'd have to be able to run a 5x5 or maybe 6x5 to get running water, soil, and lava into the same embark, though. If you're interested, I can post the seed when I next get to my laptop.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: January 30, 2015, 09:24:55 pm »
First fort with a tower as a neighbor, and things are going well. I get one migrant wave before the first fall caravan, bringing me up to twelve dwarves. Caravan comes, and I buy a yak bull to go with the female I had on embark. Next migrant wave pushes me to twenty-one dwarves.

Undead siege ensues. Thirty-eight mixed elves, humans, dwarves, and goblins are outside, so I bring everyone inside and raise the bridge. Decide it's a good time to start training a second squad of three dwarves and look for magma. My 1x1 staircase misses every cavern layer and the magma sea. Lose two miners when I go looking for magma and find an underground lake instead. Despite all that, I'm laying out my magma workstations another first. Eventually, I'll go get those squatters off my lawn...

Candy is good for anything except mail (breastplates are actually the one that should be candy), and, if you want to give your dwarves the ability to shield bash effectively, shields (duh). For shields and other blunt items, platinum is best. For sharp stuff, candy is what you need.

Sadly, candy canes (crutches) are currently useless.

Adamantine Mail isn't good? Why?

Mail works against blunt damage, so candy's negligible weight works against you there. Or, at least that's what I think I remember.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The terrible artifact topic.

Back after a few months away from DF, and my first artifact is "Akimadil, "The Brilliant Walls", a birchen toy hammer.

This is a birchen toy hammer. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with birch.

And I thought I'd lucked out to get a High Master Furnace Operator in the first two migrant waves. Ah, well. Embark had exposed magnetite, dolomite, and bituminous coal within sight of the wagon.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What is the best way to build a well?
« on: January 25, 2014, 06:02:04 pm »
How I do wells (may be overly complicated):

1. Mine out a room 11x11 no more than one z-level above your stream, brook, or other water source (can be lower than water level, though).

2. Dig up/down stairs into the wall of your new room and down 6-7 levels, ending in an up stair.

3. Channel your well placement.

4. Mine out a new 11x11 room and a 2-wide tunnel to your water source, leaving the last bit un-dug to avoid FUN.

5. Channel a 2x4 section of your tunnel close to your cistern.

6. Place floodgates across your tunnel just past the new channel. Place grates across the channeled area.

7. Channel out one layer of your cistern.

8. Build a lever at well level and a pressure plate set to activate at water 3/7 at one edge of your cistern on the current floor. Link both to both floodgates. Pull the lever.

9. Mine from your cistern to the channeled and grated area.

10. Channel out the floor of your cistern, except for the pressure plate.  Mine out the area under the plate.

11. Continue channeling down until you reach the bottom of your staircase.

12. Go to the water source and channel the tiles between it and your tunnel.

That should work, although I had to dam my current fort's stream because the tunnel was too long. Attaching floodgates to my pressure plate allows the stream to go back to normal when my cistern fills.

-Oh, my first post after reading/lurking for a while.
