There’s also basic information in the Dwarf Manual but the quickguide is much more detailed.
Lol

Ah! okay, found the hyperlink to the ranged weapons before but now that you point out that they're quickguides found the ammo one. Interesting read through, might have to do a little dwarf science myself to figure out how penetration and contact area affect force and damage and all that. So is there a ranged increment for these weapons? Is it based on maxed velocity? Or is it just all the same.

I was kinda curious about the different ranged weapons.

Looking for sort of a breakdown of the weapons. Went into the manual but the descriptions not huge on differences in combat between them besides hands used, ammo, skill and speed and all of them as fast anyways besides some trade only bows. So whats the difference, is there a range increment? Like crossbow can shoot farther then hammer sling?

The MecAxe throwers look cool and dwarfy but with hammer, piercing and broadhead ammo I can get all damage types with crossbows where as only one with axe thrower so it feels like a handicap if anything?

Maybe a bug but not sure. Having a little trouble with Soundsense, music doesn't seem to be playing so checked it and it made a sound for damp stone being located. Also the music files are there, found one of the mp3 files and played it and it works just fine but for some reason just doesn't want to seem to kick on while playing. Just missing the right box to check or button or application or setting to change or is this a genuine bug?

New question, hope you dont mind me being a pest, just trying to learn.

Is there a section of the manual that covers hive-keeping and if not think you could do a quick explanation on how to control what kind of colony inhabits them?

Decorations wont carry over, they are ornamental only and dont affect combat anyway.

Battle picks only exist in this mod, so its certainly a mod question. The are used in mining, like a normal pick. I dont know why he did not pick it up. Maybe its forbidden, marked for trading?

I know but a great battleaxe encrusted gems cabochons and images of dwares carved in gem with hanging rings of orc bone and spikes of granite still makes me smile

No, not marked besides some partheses that mark it as foreign cause I traded for it. Suppose that could be the problem?

Oooh, that sounds fun, wonder if decorating the parts with gems carries over since they count as finished goods at first. Gonna look into that later. One last question, know its probably not Masterwork related but kinda want to throw it on since gotten good help so far.

Tried to get miner I had to trade from a copper pick to a silver battle pick menacing with spikes of goblin bone, not sure if would really help with much but wanted to anyways, felt more dwarfy. So dumped the pick he had and hoped he would claim the new one with no luck. He refused to mine with the the other pick, are battle picks not for mining?

Restart fixed it, thanks for info on materials. Would have tried to make a stone dagger till I was blue in the face otherwise. What are the stone hilt, blade and head for anyways then?

Oh, thats not good, might be a different problem then, sitting in the same bin is a Large Black Bronze dagger and Repeating Bronze Crossbow. With some Mechanism in the same stockpile and the reaction is still redded out at the Fletcher's Workshop like I don't have the proper materials avaliable. Am I just boned in that case?

Okay I've tried to figure this one out with no luck and feels super newbie but I give up trying to puzzle this one out.
Fletcher's Workshop can add a bayonet to repeating crossbow which I thought would be awesome since my forts pretty young and the people who hunt and the people who defend it  are the same and a bayoneted crossbow I think would give them a hell of an edge when enemies close on them.

This is where I'm stumped, how do you make large rock dagger, cause thats what the reaction calls for to add bayonets and I cannot figure out how to do it. I've searched through the craftdwarfs shop and found nothing for it besides the hilts. Tried making rock hilt, blade and head to see if they could be assembled into a dagger but again no luck. What am I missing?

The (o)rders menu has nothing to do with the manager. How the manager works is that you go to the jobs screen and then (m) for the manager screen, here you can set up orders for large amounts of workshop jobs (30 max per order, so if you want say 50 of something, you need to make an order of 30 and then another of 20) and after the manager rubber stamps the orders (or whatever he does), the workshops that do that particular job will automatically queue them through.

Blerg, so much to keep track of. Got it open now and your right, got orders mixed with jobs. Thanks for the help though smjjames.

Couple last question I'm just gonna tack onto here for now, does the concept of incumberment exist in DF? I.e. Should a crossbow dwarf wear the strongest/heaviest armor avalible or is there an advantage to giving them lighter armor like leather?

Second, can scabbards be used to allow a crossbow dwarf to carry around a dagger for personal defense if he gets in close combat?

You don't need an office or assigned dwarf for the menu control orders.

If you mean the appraiser/broker/manager, a chair and table in a dirt hallway works just fine.

You dont? I thought the orders were being "delegated" by the dwarf you assigned as manager?
They'll still get done even if you dont have one?

Oooohhh, still not using orders enough, sad to say but I haven't gotten far enough to fully furnish an office and such for a Dwarf. Thanks for the help though Garath! =]

Yeah, I figured it wasn't Toady. Just poking a little fun. =P
Thanks for the idea though but wondering. Have had trouble in the past with retrieving corpses. Hunter ditched a corpse when a raven flew to close to him and then left it there to rot. Figure the same thing would happen if I sent the military out. Is that just poor job management or is there an actual designation you need to give corpses that aren't killed by hunters to make sure there butchered?

DF Gameplay Questions / Newbie Help

So got a newbie question and looking for a little advice. Been playing around with DF and been great fun except one thing. Hunting. Using the Masterwork mod btw, not sure if that changes the mechanics enough to be noteworthy for this.

Twice now I've had a Dwarf go hunting after something they REALLY shouldn't of. First time was a Wyvern, which when I saw it sparked a bit of worry but a quick check of the combat log showed he was tearing it a new one so thought. Hum, maybe over estimated Wyvern and nothing actually to worry about. No, no, there was definitely something to worry about. The other Wyverns on the map didn't take kindly to this and shook all of his limbs off before eating him. =/ Tantrum Spiral->Gave up on fort.

Decided to try an area that was kinder and found a Mirthful Mountain, surely nothing could go wrong there. Sent the hunters off to chase some Pegasus, contemplating if the elves would get angry if I sold them Pegasus sausages when Dwarf has died message popped up. What foul thing had wandered onto to the map while there were hunting I wondered? Nothing, it was the Pegasus....it had bitten him in the head, gave it a good shake and torn it off and proceed to eat it, then his body, then choked out a hunting Mastiff with its wing(What?!), and ate that as well. Poor Rozagura.

1. Tarn, your definition of Mirthful is my definition of Nightmare fuel

2. (Enough of the sillyness, this is a genuine question) How the heck do you stop this sortta thing from happening? Do you just have to do a unit list scan before sending your hunters out every time and keep an eye on them while they are hunting? Cause that seem tedious. Or is them some option I'm missing to tell hunters not to hunt dangerous creatures that I'm just missing?
