DF Gameplay Questions / civilizations grow?

i'm quite new at this game and i've been wondering - is it possible for a fortress to continue existing as a non-abandoned settlement after i abandon it?

like a necessary population to make it a permanent town?

(how) would that affect the items i can buy in the embark screen when i want to found a new fortress elsewhere? would it affect dwarven trade options as well? and what about immigration?

i tried a new fortress on 33e in a flat area with no slopes/cliffs. everything i dug was labeled above ground. some was light, some wasnt. but belowground crops were the issue and i couldnt get anything to be below ground. i tried building a house above the stairway both before and after digging. didnt make any difference. i tried constructed stairways instead of dug ones. didnt make a difference. i tried version 33d on the exact same spot, doing the exact same things. it worked just fine. i'm sticking to 33dd until this bug has been fixed.

and it definitely wasnt under a brook or any other water. though there is a brook on the map.

DF Suggestions / status screen

i see the new version has a new way of listing items to pick for a starting fortress (sorted by type)

i want the "store" section of the status screen to be sorted in the same way. this would allow much better overview of my stockpiles, especially in a large fortress.
