I like this idea. I am envisioning sort of a one ring situation from Lord of the Rings.

DF Suggestions / Re: Cribs for babies
« on: November 07, 2016, 01:06:47 pm »
I dont know. I rather like the idea of dwarven mothers using their infants as shields when met with *fun* or conscripted into military service. I also rather like "dwarven daycare".

Actually I am totally on board with this idea. although I can foresee some fortress keepers to place daycare's (areas full of cribs) in dangers way, such as right outside of the entrance. First line of defense, babies!. you never know, the time the dragon takes to burn the babies may be what it takes to get your draw bridge shut and the military set up for defense. Also now that I am thinking about it, I am waiting for that moment when a dwarf gives birth and immediately throws baby at enemy and kills said enemy with baby projectile. Mark my words and tug my beard! It will happen one of these days, if it hasn't already!

Creative Projects / What name seems the most attractive to you?

I am currently creating a game and am at the point where it needs a name. I have a list where the central thyme of the game is attached, but I am looking for a catchy title. Sorry for the vagueness of the game, and if you are not a gamer, or this does not relate to you, imagine you are in a book store, which of these titles would be the most likely to catch your attention? I will say that is fantasy based. You are also welcome to suggest a name. Also let me know if any of those are taken.

Here is the list:

Umbra Nights
Eternal Umbra
Umbra World
Umbra Plane
Umbra and Light
Umbra Realms

I decided to try my hand at modding with a project in mind; Dinosaurs! Rawr!. My first and so far only attempt is to try and make an "Abelisaurus" using the help of the wiki. It seems the game feels that adding something of this nature is just too much I am doing something wrong, which is something I expected. Godzilla will have to wait Below is what I currently have for this creature and am wondering if anyone could pinpoint the problem(s) that is causing the crash (when in object testing area, but I assume much the same will happen in fortress or adventure mode). Anything I can add to this thing, like maybe a line saying it eats elves for breakfast along side fried giant ostrich eggs . . . or perhaps just something saying its a predator (or even better, scavenger, if that's available). Just examples; I am sure I ended up giving it eyes on its neck or something by mistake. I am new to this after all.

I am back for more dwarfy-ness and am wondering what is the latest stable version of Dwarf Fortress. I last left off at 40.24. Also a link to its lazy newb pack companion (granted there is one). And what new highlights it brings to the tavern table. Lets have our selves a drink on it!

Oh, Thank you. That I think clears it up. Also sorry for cluttering up the forum with another of these type of questions.

Other than lazy noob pack, my game is unmodded. A few days ago I started a new fortress. I secured lodging under ground. I awaited for my first traders to come in. Behold, fall comes and soon after so does the caravan. Also it seems this caravan is made of both Goblins and dwarves. I did some digging around on the internet and only found that modding the game can something like this happen. Is this true? Or did I over look something when doing my research? Again, this is a unmodded fortress, other than lazy noob pack.

I would upload the fortress but I am not sure how to upload a whole folder.

I am going to omit the Pokemon game I suggested for the list as it appears to be throwing all the following posts off topic, and I do not want this to get locked.

As someone who has a respectable amount of free games. I feel like a complete jerk elf not sharing some of the games I have found that I do not see on the list.

"Command and Conquer", "Command and Conquer Red Alert" and "Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun" (My personal favorite) have been free for some time. Tweaking them to work correctly on modern windows OS however is a pain.

Not sure how the community feels about flash games, but I find "Dice Wars" to be a good killer of about 15 minutes if need something like that.

Last I checked "Wayward beta" is still free.

Its dwarf science time! Ever wondered just how big some of the creatures and items are in game? I well aware the wiki has a number for this, but its not in inches, feet, centimeters, ect, its a rather random number that some may find it hard to grasp. However, I am going to use those numbers as a reference. For instance, the average size for an adult human is 69.7 inches according to Google, and the size of a human in the wiki is 70,000. I am going to round up the inches of humans to 70 for ease. I will use this to determine the size of two legged humanoid fleshy creatures as every inch being 1000 points. Now then, lets get down to science!

The average height of a Dwarf, Elf and Goblin by my calculations is 5 feet tall.

Kobolds and amphibian men stands an average of 1 foot 8 inches. Thats about the height of a seat of a chair.

Reptile and serpent men measure 4 feet 2 inches. Slightly taller than a vacuum cleaner.

Rodent men are 3 feet 4 inches. About the height of a kitchen counter.

A bronze colossus height I conservatively estimate to be 276 yards tall. Thats 100 yards taller than the tallest wind turbine!

A dragon is 25 feet at the shoulder. The size of a 2 and a half story structure.

Cyclops and Ettins tower at about 222 yards tall. Thats 12 yards taller than the Gateway Arch.

Giants stand a staggering 250 yards in height. Thats 2 and a half football fields.

Minotaurs are roughly just under 18 feet tall. About 2 stories.

More soon. Including the amount of material for objects, the size of a single square and how big is the inside of a cave in a dwarf fortress.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Werebeasts and their Children

I have only heard of this, so you may want to test this first. Some time ago I read about a method of separating a mother from a child by doing the following: putting said mother and child on a floor of grates, then having a rush of water above them come down, washing the babe through the grates and the mother being safe and sound. Only thing is the player did this with the intent of drowning the baby, so watch out for that if you want the babe to live. I have intentions of doing this and mixing it with dwarven day care.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Trivial findings
« on: July 11, 2015, 06:03:36 pm »
Three things I have found rather amusing. The first is just a few seconds ago I found out you can build a well on top of a well. By that I mean you can have a well on one floor drawing water under it, and a few floors above its exact position, one can build another well where its bucket would need to pass through the lower well.

Another which I think many is aware of, is when a mother is in a squad and is caring for a baby, she will take her baby into battle with her. I like to think she has a baby in one arm and a weapon in the other, using her baby like a shield.

Lastly I had a dwarf become restless due to stress from getting good rest.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Vampires, they make me think . . .
« on: July 10, 2015, 04:45:41 pm »
The easiest thing to do with vampires is to just lock them in an office and make them the bookkeeper/manager, and they'll sit there and do a better job at managing than any mortal dwarf could ever dream of.

I rather like this idea. Not as bloody, but very industrious. I think I will still give her a set of armor and a weapon for a last ditch effort to save my fort when !fun! happens.

Vampires are a legitimate !FUN! military tactic.  They will not die from lack of blood.  However, as a Dwarf, the Vampire will still suffer from alcohol withdrawal, becoming increasingly lethargic & weak.  As for releasing night-creatures onto the battlefield; just make sure your Fort entrance has multiple 'airlocks'.  This will allow you to feed gear and building materials to the outside.  Have your Vampire construct his own prison! :D

So they drink both blood and ale? If the withdrawal is only from a lack of blood, I could always drop a kitten into the chamber below if I make it two stories and have a cat-splosion. The idea of a vampire who feeds exclusively on kittens intrigues me.
