DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Atheistic dwarves? Hermite Vampires?
« on: March 26, 2015, 05:48:59 am »
So I used the renaming-trick and sure enough she's a vampire.

Dug out a crypt with a drawbridge-airlock, sent her in and done (she was too busy training/digging, she never even got the chance to go down to the sleeping-room level, let alone drain anyone).

2 Seasons later she gets elected mayor. I mean really? Now I have to add a fancy sleeping/dining/throneroom that won't even be utilized by her!
She must be some sort of myth all the others talk about, since barely 10% of my dwarves have even seen her. (She arrived in the migration wave and went to work on her crypt immediately).

PS: FYI: She does have good social skills but no friends among the other dwarves.

So, one of the dwarves in the latest wave of migration is a Great Cook, Great Macedwarf and really good in most social skills.
Naturally I thought: "VAMPIRE" but apparently she doesn't have any relations, no friends, no deity, no nothing.

Shouldn't a vampire at least have one deity? The one who cursed him? And don't they usually have a ton of relatives?
She also claims she likes beetroot wine and giant barn owl meat, but maybe thats a lie?

Also, I checked several other of my dwarves relations and it seems a few of them have no deity. Is this a new feature of DF2014, atheist dwarves?

That is odd. I would suggest backing up the save and retiring to take a look at legends. See if any of their sites are still standing. I have heard of civs bouncing back and reclaiming their cities if there's enough population left. Or founding new ones, but the only way to know for sure what's going on is to check legends at this point. I've had that message and my civ was just fine when I checked.
Ok, *fingers-crossed* I get my save to load back after I put the backup back ;)
The history of my civ Stukonushat "The Squashed Basement" is 250 years of Giant [Jaguar,Hyena, Cheetah] became enemy plus the occasional noble ascending some nobility position. Most interesting piece I found was this:
http://i.imgur.com/veUoJvi.png
First they got a new Goblin Baroness and then later in 250 a bunch of dwarfs leave and rejoin? is this Leaving & Rejoining normal? Or might it have something to do with my founding my fortress in 250?
My civ is definitely at war with a goblin civ, they attacked each other back and forth during the existence of my fortress. Maybe this means that I have to expect some goblin visitors too sometime?
(here are a few entries about the attacks, looks like one of my civs citys was already overrun)

If you're still getting caravans and migrants, I doubt your civ is dead. Likely the liaison got killed. Check your civ through 'c'. As long as you still have a king and other nobles, your civ is fine and you will be able to progress as normal. It may take several years for the liaison position to get filled though, so just be prepared to wait. It'll give you time to get noble quarters decked out at least. :3
Huh, the game says 'No outpost liaison? How curious...' with every dwarven caravan in red text, exactly as described in http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Outpost_liaison, which supposedly means the civilisation is dead.
Pressing "c" reveals a dwarven civilisation, all with outpost liason, nobles and king. Bug?

Speaking of "c", does is normally show goblin civs there too? Or does it only list friendly civs?
Because I only have 3 civs, one dwarf, one human, one elf..
(I'm now in year 3, like 5 artifacts and many gold/electrum furniture objects so definitely worthy of attack, the only calamity that has befallen me was a single werepangolin)

Make splints out of wood. It works the same.

You can order bags of plaster from most mountainhomes.

Yay, that solves my problem then. There are plenty of splints in the hospital, I just thought I'd also need gypsum for proper treatments. Guess my previous bad results with dwarven healthcare were more due to the lack of adept doctors ;)

@Mountainhomes: It appears something happened to the liason at world-gen therefore no asking. Does this also mean I don't get dukes/barons/kings?
Caravans & Migrants arrive properly.

So, I've had a few embarks now, they usually go well and I made it to a healthy ~100pop and an adamantine-clad military squad several times.

Weirdly though, I always have to watch out to never get any broken bones, since I am always mega low on plaster, in fact Gypsum seems to be the rarest substance.
Sometimes I was lucky to aquire some from merchants, but in the latest game I didn't get a liason ('the liason is curiously missing' -> dwarf civ dead?) and they don't seem to bring it without asking for it.

I guess you also gathered already that I never found any gypsum-able-material on any of my embark sites.

Is there any trick to get it? Could it be that my (latest) world is completely missing the stones? (Since caravans don't have it either)

A little late, but happy holidays and a gigantic thank you for the support to you all from the little ants:

(Expect a new Dev-Update this weekend!)

To be honest, I always thought a good demo would have done wonders for the game.

While demos are notorious for dropping sales on big budget POS games, I feel that, in the case of an indie kickstarter game, a demo would probably show that you know what you're doing and give something for people to be wooed by. A lot of people have been scared by kickstarters not finished, after all.

Well, I didn't want to release it to early. Especially since it's very close to DF in many aspects and I didn't want to scare the masses away. But now we have ample time, I was working on it most of today and it makes good progress. Expect a new dev-update video before NYE and a first demo in January (for MacOS Yosemite, not testing on other machines atm, the release will cross-platform). [ I did promise a demo before the end of the campaign but after the last hope to reach our goal dissipated I spent some xmas time with my gf, so everything is a little slower now]

Ok, first the bad news.. we did 68% and the project wasn't funded.

Now the good news: We managed to rally 535 people behind this in 28 days that were willing to pledge 13677$! That is an impressive result for a project that was virtually unknown a month ago. Also for those following the updates, I did implement some key features during the campaign and it looks better every day.

This is just the start - not the end!

Many projects have been quite successful in their second attempt, I have been asked by indie festivals to submit our game, we have interest from german federal science-education funds so it's actually all looking really ok!
We did setup a forum to keep in touch with all of you during development and already have a big thread we're collecting what to do better in a second attempt. Or for the redditers we have a subreddit on http://www.reddit.com/r/formicarium/ !
I'll be working for lunch-money for a while now, but I'm continuing Formicarium at the side. Expect a dev-update monthly/bimonthly, I'm hoping if we have a much bigger demo by the time of the next campaign, we'll be able to start off much better (we mostly did fail at the first 7 days, then after the RockPaperShotgun article it went ok, but overall we learned a lot).

Ok, and so it's not just text for you, here's a picture of my preliminary underground  material-layer algorithm (I wrote yesterday):

Rockpapershotgun actually did an article on this kickstarter

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/11/30/formicarium-ant-game/

Didn't see anyone link it...so...here it is.
Oh yes, I wanted to mention this.. so many things in my head these days...

I loved both the update videos. Can we have a beta soon? So that we can provide concrete feedback?
Working hard in it, every hour I don't have to do marketing/spreading the news. It's definitely getting closer! (You can also watch me live, I'm streaming development sometime on twitch now)

Dear friends, I have been very busy the last days, trying to add as many programming in between all the marketing as possible.

Here is our new dev-update with the results (the hive is more intelligent every day).
http://youtu.be/_T1T4SWK8W4

Furthermore, are any of you experienced 4Chan or tumblr people? I was told I should do more advertising there, but I have no account/experience with either.

Thank you and please tell me what you think about the update :)

An Article I wrote got featured big time over at www.erfworld.com

Rob Balders comics are really nice, it's about an US-gamer-dude who is somehow transported into his battle board game and becomes one factions warlord.

Played this for a while, really neat concept. I always loved Industry Giant and being stranded on an island - games.

They are also a european team, so I really hope more people find them and it gets bigger :)

what is this a game for-
* rabidgam3r is brained with a half-brick
I love how this is coming along! This is gonna be one of my most-played games, I can feel it. :P
8)
I'd be delighted, after all these hours of working on it :)

you guys aren't getting enough coverage :P
Sadly yes, Kickstarter needs to get the other 7/8th.. which is hard without major media coverage..
Somehow I need to pay my designers wage for the next half year (paid her the last 7 from my private savings, it's barely minimum wage but she needs to pay her rent). If we don't get the money I will still continue, but progress will be much slower since I also have to take new projects in.
(We all sent out tons of mails again last night, which is Thursday morning US time)

Why always use the higher attribute number for the offspring of ants?
Yeah, thats the way it works, between the (I) and the (II) gene it always takes the highest number. Gene (I) comes from parent (I) and is randomly chosen from the parents (I) or (II) copies and gene (II) from parent (II).
Multiplier gets multiplied with numbers, if both attributes are multipliers the result is 1. So one multiplier sometimes makes a super-bug, but a beetle who randomly got two x. is really screwed in one of his departments. The advantage in this system is that inbreeding is really a force to be dealt with.

Oh my.. Will there be 'mutations'?
Yes, that too, but only sometimes. It would have made the above diagram more complicated that's why I left it out.
