DF Wiki Discussion / Poet writing poems
« on: July 05, 2016, 03:18:49 am »
The DF2014:Poet wiki article says: "...To write poetry, press x, then select compose...".

Where to press 'x'? Any preconditions?
I'm really unable to find the correct procedure/menu to get to write poems.
The wiki is really very brief about this topic.

Any hint, please?
Many thanks in advance.

DF General Discussion / Re: Avoid losing progress after crash
« on: June 27, 2016, 03:03:29 pm »
Thanks for both answers.
Yes, I am aware of the config files and have the autosave feature turned on.
However, saving once a season is not sufficient for me.
When I'm planning some "stuff", I play mostly with pause ON and giving LOT of orders.
After an hour or two, the DF time moves barely few days, but there's a huge amount of activities performed.
If lost (due to a sudden crash), it really hurts....

Isn't there a way how to backup the game progress without explicitly "saving" and reloading the game?

DF General Discussion / Avoid losing progress after crash
« on: June 27, 2016, 09:13:25 am »
I'm playing the vanilla DF (always the recent release) on Linux (Arch, x64).
It happens, that DF crashes from time-to-time.
OK, no problems, but is there any hint/fix/user-script to avoid losing the progress I made since the last game start?

I used to occasionally re-start DF while playing to allow my 'saves' folder to update and auto-sync with remote cloud storage,
however when I forget to do this for more than an hour and DF crashes, all my progress from the last hour is lost.
(It seems that the world's folder stays unchanged and current session's folder ('current') is cleared after a crash)
Very frustrating sometimes, really.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Which tileset do you like best?

Definitely ASCII. And the reason?
It's like reading a book.
You have to imagine everything you are reading about.
To the smallest detail.
How beautiful the adventure is depends ONLY on your imagination.
And trust me, my DF looks AMAZING.... ;)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Caravans in unaccessible depot ?

the caravan wagons are bypassing your inaccessible site"
I really can remember such messages, however ignored them because they managed to get into my depot.
Now I understand, that only merchants did...not the wagons.

Your entrance design looks very good to me, I'll definitely give it a try.

The puzzle seems to get resolved slowly.
Indeed, I can't see any wagon in my unit list or examining the depot carefully.
I assume that wiki is correct and I'm getting 'only' merchants.

This is my actual entrance hall and depot (top right)

Traps block the pathing of wagons. Are you getting wagons, or just merchants?
I have them in my depot right now. How do I discover whether they are merchants or there are any wagons?

DF Gameplay Questions / Caravans in unaccessible depot ?
« on: August 19, 2015, 03:32:38 am »
Hi all...
My first fort has a ditch around with a single entrance (3 tiles wide, retractable bridge) to allow caravans.
All tiles (from inside) adjacent to the bridge have cage traps installed (dwarfs have to walk through them if they want to enter).
The same situation is repeated at the main entrance to the fort itself, where I've created a hall (3 tiles wide) covered by
various weapon traps (especially cages, serrated iron discs and giant iron blade axes).
My trade depot is deep inside my fortress, so anyone trying to get into it has to pass all my surprises :-)

The wiki states that: '...Traps will block the passage of caravan wagons...'.
This seems to be true, because when I hit 'D', my depot looks inaccessible (yellow 'D' tiles in vanilla DF).

However - caravans seem to ignore all the traps and calmly walk into my depot every year and I'm able to trade peacefully.
What's 'wrong' here? Is the wiki misleading or I'm getting it wrong?

Many thanks for your explanation.
