DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Stone beds
« on: May 25, 2008, 08:47:00 am »
I think the mattress is implied in any bed.  A wooden bed would be just as uncomfortable as a stone bed.    :p  I'm pretty sure when you build a bed in this game, you are actually just building the frame.

Yeah, I tried that exactly.  I get 0 success from it.  It works somewhat when I make the ramps a 3x3 pattern, though.  'D'epot access shows some squirrelly things  though.

I have something like this:

F=floor
^=channel w/a up ramp under it

FFFFFF
F^^^F
F^^^F
F^^^F
FFFFFF

then, at the bottom of those ramps, the path leads east about 10 squares and the pattern is repeated.  When wagons go down, the then head west 5 or 6 squares and unload at the depot.  Humans seem to have more luck with this than elves.  Not sure what's going on.  Hope the diagram is clear.

I'm having significant troubles placing my depot two levels below the surface.  I've tried 1x3 and 3x3 sections of ramps with intermittent success.  Anyone mind sharing exactly how to make these things work under the earth like that?

The wiki has tons of information on everything Dwarf Fortress, including multiple ways to break through the aquifer. If you have any further questions just ask, manipulating the environment is my game   :)</STRONG>

Ok, you caught me.  I didn't check the wiki first, even though I had it open to the sections on magma and fortress design.  Doh.  I'm tired and I'll blame it on that.  Thanks for the responses, folks.

DF Gameplay Questions / Aquifer
« on: January 05, 2008, 12:42:00 am »
So my base is entirely on level -1 on the Z axis and I've tried to drill down in about 20 or 25 places across the entire game map.  I keep hitting water since I'm on an aquifer.

Is it possible there is not a single tile I can drill through to get access to what lies beneath the aquifer?  Also, any folks have suggestions on how to deal with the water in such a way as to let me get past?  Aquifers can never be totally emptied, correct?  Might I be able to apply a pump to the problem?

I'm just getting comfortable with manipulating water via channels and flood gates, so advanced help is welcome.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Health care problems

Not the only one.  I've had a couple of dwarves die like this.  I just assumed it was a bug.  One of them had head injuries so I didn't really care.  Cost of doing business until it's fixed I suppose.

That was an excellent post and spoke directly to what I needed to learn. Thanks, man.

DF Gameplay Questions / Water and magma
« on: December 17, 2007, 03:54:00 pm »
Basically, I'm scared of both water and magma.  I've read the wiki info and countless posts in these forums about both, but when I go to try and engineer some kind of fluid management...I freeze up.  It's kind of like potty anxiety or something; you know, where you can't use the bathroom if someone is standing beside you or listening at the bathroom door.   :)  I think my trouble is not that I don't know what I want to accomplish, but what steps I need to take to make it happen.  The topic is just..I dunno...arcane.  My brain resists my attempts to educate myself on the topic.  Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Deactivating squads
« on: May 18, 2008, 05:17:00 pm »
So there is no way to remove a soldier or civilian from all squads once they've been added to one?  They have to stay in a squad from then on, even if it's just them in it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Deactivating squads
« on: May 18, 2008, 04:46:00 pm »
I've read the wiki and this thread on the topic .  Currently, I have one squad with all my military units in it, and EVERYONE else is in their own squad (like 50 different squads!)

I guess it's mostly aesthetic, but (a)ctivating them only changes them from soldier to civilian.  Is there any way to make them independent again, as in not part of any squad?

DF Bug Reports / Game freeze [38c]
« on: May 28, 2008, 11:55:00 pm »
Just dinking around and my game completely froze up.  I think I had just built a new mason workshop.  It's hard to say.  Nothing obviously weird was happening.  I can provide the save (though I lost about 45 minutes of work on it) if requested.  No mods running.  The entirety of my errorlog.txt is as follows:

DF Suggestions / Re: A series of suggestions
« on: December 24, 2007, 12:47:00 am »
You know what's annoying?  Trying to change skills on someone who is carrying a baby around.  You can't examine them!

The one truly major flaw I see in this game right now is having to flag 100,000 rocks for dumping one at a time.    :(
