mine is usually a jackal man slaughtering elves and laughing

perhaps you could try burrows to force your soldiers to stay within a certain area.

ive had success with using burrows to get military units to retreat, so maybe they could be used to hold formation

one time when i tried playing adventure mode as a tiger man (as i did not see a jackal man option) i noticed that i came from an elven civilization.
perhaps try embarking near elves?

where does the wiki say this?
ive only ever seen such things referred to in D for Dwarf sections, which are jokes

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / guest at embark?
« on: December 07, 2017, 01:00:25 pm »
so ive just started my first fortress of 0.44.02 and right off the bat ive noticed something strange.
there is an elf bard standing next to my wagon.

on the units screen they are listed as guest/no activity.

they are just slowly meandering around the wagon not doing anything.

i had barely begun to even dig into the ground and chop trees when i noticed them, so theres no reason i can think of for them to be here already.

im guessing that this is due to the new features introduced in the update, and that this person is actually some sort of thief trying to pose as a bard.

is there any other explanation for this? is it a common occurrence?

this is entirely normal, your old dwarves belong to a diffrent faction and are considered hostile

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Good Artifact?
« on: October 21, 2017, 05:49:19 pm »
i would say my best artifact was a platinum crossbow, unfortunately i never got to use it because that fort kept crashing and i eventually got fed up with it and abandoned it before anything interesting happened

personally i like the UI the way it is.
yeah, the first time i played dwarf fortress it took me about 30 minutes to figure out how to generate a world and then embark.

and yeah, that embark ended very shortly because i couldent even figure out how to dig, chop trees, or absolutely anything at all.

and yeah, i originally thought that this game was terrible and completely unplayable and so i immediately deleted it from my computer.

but several months later i decided to give it another try, and i actually figured out how to dig. and then everybody died of starvation because i had no idea how to farm.

and then the next fort i figured out how to farm.... and everybody died of dehydration because i didnt know how to make booze....

but EVENTUALLY i figured out the UI, and here i am, enjoying a masterfully crafted plump helmet roast, sipping sunshine from my stoneware goblet as i listen to the beautiful music that is zombie goblins melting in a pit of magma.

arnt all forts communist since the economy is disabled?

but anyway, the injustice system only punishes any random dwarf that a noble decides should be punished for not completing a mandate, or for bringing something to a trade depot that the noble has said shouldent be traded.

the best way to get lots of hammerings is to become the mountianhome so that you get the monarch, and all the other lazy nobles who will sit around making mandates all day.

then just ignore the mandates and enjoy as your entire population is slaughtered by their own judicial system, causing everything in your fort to grind to a halt due to a lack of workers.

longest fort i had was 10 years, i stopped playing that one because the update that added taverns, libraries, and temples came along and i wanted to play with the new features.

the most dwarves ive had was at least 140 but im not certain of the actual number. i know it was at least 140 because the aforementioned 10 year old fort was a metropolis and the minimum population for that is 140

yeah as of right now its still bugged.

as for making foreign weapons, its easily done via modding though i dont remember how to do it off the top of my head.

if you really want your dwarves to wield two handed weapons you can increase their size so that everyone can.

in creature_standard, search for [BODY_SIZE:12:0:60000] and change it to [BODY_SIZE:12:0:70000]

that will make them as large as humans and they should all be able to wield larger weapons.

or maybe change it to something even bigger and have giant dwarves.

The giant dwarf UristMcDwarf has come! An enormous drunken humanoid. It has an enormous auburn beard and its eyes shimmer amber. Beware its deadly vomit!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What is your favourite population cap?
« on: October 03, 2017, 12:58:36 pm »
i usually set my population limit to 30, but i set the hard limit at 80 and allow births.

that way i have enough dwarves in the beginning to get things started, and over time children are born in my fort and raise the population closer to 80.

having them born in my fort makes it so that i get a fairly large heads up regarding making accommodations for them so i know years in advance to start making a room for them.

this is helpful for me because i usually make entire homes for my dwarves that include a bedroom, dining room and office; rather than just a small nook with a bed and a door

You don't need DFhack to run Therapist.
Or at least, you never used to. Been a few years since I set aside that crutch (in favor of Dfhack's Manipulator, sure, but I eventually stopped using that too...).

something about moving to 64bit caused therapist to go nuts and it took months to fix and it involved dfhack
