It's probably good that the voting system gets 'seeded' with the most popular maps.

I'd throw in a vote for Borax, Cashworks and Swift.  I heard a lot of complaints about payload maps though when we were playing.  Maybe a core set for each type?

As someone else said (about Toyfort), it can be a pain to download maps you haven't seen before (for me it's taken as much as 10-15 minutes, kind of tough when you have limited playtime.)

I'm not a big fan of the gravity mods, etc, I think stuff like that should be on specialized servers, if we're trying to build a community/team, we should try to attract the median user.

Fun playing with all of you.  I promise to connect to the server daily.

I haven't finished reading the thread, but I'm definitely checking this out tonight.

Ahh, I thought they were carved wholly from stone.  So I should just read the raws to find this stuff out (I never looked at them yet.)

Thanks!

I've had this happen occasionally:  I tried to trade a +obsidian short sword+ for some sun berry[5] and Nemo says:  Once a beautiful tree, and now?  It is a rude bauble fit only for your kind.

DF General Discussion / Re: Spotting DF off-web

That's why I threw in the reference to Visicalc.  I was thinking along the lines of, "See boss, quarter of quarter our output of +Microline Mug+ is increasing and literally burying the competition!  Check out this EGA-mode graphing application!"

It sure did look innocuous in that quick few frames of video...it could've been an engineering application.  In fact, in a sense it is.

DF General Discussion / Spotting DF off-web
« on: August 06, 2008, 02:28:39 pm »

I was watching a quarterly corporate video for my employer today, and one of the people in the video (who was a typical office worker I guess) was busily doing something, and in the background you could make out DF on the screen.

I wonder if whoever was in the video will fess up? :)  I'm sure it's making smiles all around.

Will Toady put in one of those old-fashioned "boss hide" features where when you hit a function key a Lotus 1-2-3 or Visicalc style spreadsheet will pop up? :)

39C is awesome.  I hadn't been playing for awhile, then I got a new laptop with a Centrino vPro Core2 Duo.

First fortress got set alight by a dragon and it's been burning for well nigh a year (periodically dwarves light up again if they go near the trade depot which apparently is superheated...I'd love to see a dwarven "thermometer" that I could build to detect the temperature.)

I decided to build a new world and try tweaking the params a little to give more volcanism.  I was rewarded with a hilly region with a magma vent, a named cave, and an underground pool.

I asked the dwarves for flux but only got one of each type I requested.  On the other hand I set the priority low so maybe if I jump it up I'll get more?  Or maybe buying some creates more demand and they'll bring more next time?

Well, I've been having trouble getting the Dwarven Liason to meet successfully.  The humans bring plenty of metal bars (and powdery stuff like pearlash and charcoal.)

The elves don't bring any stone.

If only I could complete a transaction with the Dwarven Liason, I don't know what's wrong with him.  He wanders around but never seems to engage my...um...whoever it is.  I have a Count, does he still negotiate with the Mayor?

I'm assuming I'll be able to ask him for some kind of flux.

I'd also like to import sand.  I have plenty on this map but I've been stuck on a few otherwise-great maps with no sand.

It just happened to be in the press too (via National Review Online):
http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/01/20/europe/climate.php

Apparently those volcaners are meltin' tha' glaceers down South.

I'm just loving my Ice Station Dwarfda.  It's taking a *long* time to build out and still no flux.  I should try to import some (can you?)

No Baron(ess) yet either, I'm at 95 dwarves.  Lost maybe 32 to various kinds of monsters.  Now the terrain is pretty secure.  I'm looking forward to a megabeast.

If you get the Windows calculator tool out (under accessories) there's a 'Scientific' option under the View menu that enables hex conversion.

Although what's scientific about Hex I don't know...it's just like decimal only with extra numbers.  I personally prefer 'bc' and 'man ascii.'

I suppose my term 'Entry Mode' is equivalent to a Unix login (or something XDM): it displays a little icon for each user on the machine and when you click it it brings up your session.  I'm kind of lazy with the Windows GUI terminology because I don't really develop anything in it.

I didn't have any trouble before this, and I have to admit it hasn't happened since.  Another poster had a good point about Logitech.  I have a fairly old logitech wireless desktop (circa 2001) and it may indeed have some kind of keymapping in the hardware (although I recently rebuilt the system when I upgraded the CPU and didn't add any special drivers for the keyboard.)

So, I just downloaded the new 33a this morning (I think that is 176 vice 169?) and I haven't seen the behavior.

[minor digression follows, just to pad out this text...]

One funny behavior that I didn't document that seems to be continuing is that occasionally the select a unit on the unit list with 'u'=>'c' brings up the wrong creature, that might be some kind symbol lookup type problem.

I'll see if I can find another reference in a thread and post there.

Thanks!

DF Bug Reports / 38a odd keyboard issue
« on: February 11, 2008, 11:01:00 am »
I left the game running when I went to bed.  When I checked it this morning it was paused after a miner found some topaz(alite?)

For some reason the keyboard was only partly operating, escape didn't work, and the arrow keys only worked left and down, not right and up.  Some keys worked, some keys didn't.

I hit ctrl-alt-delete and it brought up the menu, I saved and exited and got back in with no problems, so whatever it was didn't get saved.

I'll note that I'm running XP and it automatically switched to the entry mode it uses when you come back from screen saver.  I was running in full-screen.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Underground trees.
« on: December 27, 2007, 10:49:00 pm »
I had a deciduous tree (Maple I think) grow in a channel in version 33f the other day.

I dug the channel, set up a pump.  The channel filled and after awhile a tree sprouted and blocked the channel.  I sent a woodcutter in there to chop it down and he drowned!

Thanks, I was able to confirm that the Expedition Leader was a swimmer after the fact, but I wasn't able to confirm anything about the Trade Rep.

I suppose he was just a swimmer by seren "dip" ity?
