DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress
« on: February 07, 2022, 08:43:22 am »
Greetings, Toady! I hope all is well with you and the development of the next update!

Are gremlins being trainable intentional, or a case of a pet token you forgot to remove? Given they're the only sapients you can train, and trained sapients are buggy at best, I was wondering whether it was an accident or something you actually intend to expand upon later.

DF Suggestions / Toggles for nest boxes
« on: July 28, 2021, 06:37:32 pm »
Breeding egg-laying animals is somewhat unintuitive in the current version of the game, especially for new players. To make things flow more naturally, I think nest boxes could use a toggle similar to that found in coffins.

My thought is to have nest boxes have a "Y or N" toggle that reads along the lines of "Harvest eggs automatically", set to Y by default. Setting it to N would make it so dwarves will no longer haul any eggs laid in that specific nest box, avoiding the hassle of having to navigate menus to manually forbid eggs every time you want them to hatch. This streamlines and automates the process for the player, while opening up the possibility of things like planning specific nest boxes specifically for breeding poultry, if they feel the desire to do so.

DF General Discussion / Re: The Villain Arc hype thread!
« on: September 10, 2018, 12:47:44 pm »
Forgive me for my ignorance but I'm yet to find out what the whole villain thing really entails. The dev notes aren't exactly clear since Toady just comments on how villains form relationships for reasons but I still don't understand the purpose of it all.

How do these "villains" affect the game? Are they just quest objectives or do they have anything special going on for them? Are they going to be involved in fortress mode in any significant way? The notes say "extort from the fortress" but that sounds mostly identical to the current sieges.

Keep in mind DF dwarves have perfect darkvision. They don't need torches (or any source of light for that matter) to see in the dark.

The only odd thing that happened before this was that a human caravan turned up and then walked halfway to my fort before deciding to leave.

That's exactly what it is, a scuttled human wagon. Something scared them off (probably a wild animal) and they dropped everything they had in the wagon into the ground.

I've tried making subterranean megabeasts and it led them to not spawn at all, not even in Legends. So I'm fairly sure they're restricted to being above-ground.

DF General Discussion / Re: Speedrunning Dwarf Fortress – Ideas

A tantrum spiral run would last forever given tantrum spirals haven't been a thing for years now.

For adventurer mode, beating a vault and taking the slab there would be a logical idea. That's probably the closest thing DF has to a final challenge.

DF Wiki Discussion / Wiki not displaying pictures correctly
« on: September 03, 2017, 07:54:38 am »
I've been experiencing this problem since about last Tuesday (August 29). The wiki's pictures are all being displayed as either error text or red links.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm using the main page gallery as an example because it has the most pics in one page, but this happens in all articles of the wiki to me. Trying to directly check a picture's "page" will accuse it of not existing, when it clearly does.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? At first I thought it was some sort of temporary server bug, but it's been nearly a week now.

The entire purpose of the alpha releases was for people to report issues like that. If you don't, they won't magically be fixed. Also, that is a crash.

That said, have you narrowed it down to dwarfvet? That is, if dwarfvet is completely disabled (run "unload dwarfvet" to be sure), does it still crash?

Well I'm sorry for being unaware an issue tracker existed at the time, since it was an alpha release I expected bugs to exist and assumed other people would notice the problem, given how easy it is to reproduce.

And yes, dwarfvet is definitely the issue. The game runs flawlessly until I enable it. Unloaded and loaded it, same problem.

Hello,

I've been experiencing problems with the dwarfvet plugin. Trying to use it causes the game to close itself without warning. i.e. an injured cat goes to the hospital to rest, a dwarf goes to the hospital to take care of it, and then suddenly the game shuts down completely. The time it takes for the game to shut down seems completely random; sometimes it happens right after the animal starts resting, sometimes it waits until the animal is taken care of, but it always happens eventually.

I've taken a look through the thread and the issue tracker and didn't notice any mention of this, so I'm wondering if I'm the only one with the problem. I've experienced it since the alpha releases.

DF Modding / Re: [MODDING] CREATURE & ENTITY QUESTIONS THREAD
« on: June 18, 2017, 01:43:19 pm »
I'm trying to make a creature who is covered in basalt, but has the interior of a normal animal. Like, imagine a dragon with stone scales, but normal fleshy and bone insides.

I've tried the following:

But it doesn't seem to work, by the testing I've done in the arena. Seems like it just results in the creature having no skin at all.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

With the coming changes and buffs to kobolds, are we gonna see anything similar for the cavern animal people tribes anytime soon, or is that for later? Right now their presence is almost negligible.

II don't play adventure mode regularly but 'm curious. If you play as a creature who can suck blood out of people with a bite attack (mosquito man, leech man, etc), can you become a vampire by biting one and sucking their blood?

14
This happens every time a hostile animal gets beaten into the ground. I've seen it happen with cave crocs, cave toads, even giant cave spiders. Dwarves beat them until they're prone (I assume the game classifies it as being in a submissive position), the dwarves ignore it, then the animal gets back up and the cycle repeats.

DF General Discussion / Re: Can troglodytes become werebeasts?
« on: April 26, 2017, 06:51:57 am »
According to the interaction examples provided in the raws, werebeasts require CAN_LEARN + HAS_BLOOD, and they can't be SUPERNATURAL or NOT_LIVING. So any creature with CAN_LEARN that has blood and isn't undead can become a werebeast, including troglodytes.
