DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bookcase still not working
« on: August 06, 2017, 02:59:54 am »
I guess Ill remove lazy newb and see how it goes, dont really want to as it has good features, will sux not having it.

Just confirmed, has nothing to do with lazy newb pack, works with or without it. Looks like somehow my save became bugged and wont allow bookcases.

Reading between the lines, it seems your issue is that you can't produce bookcases because the required reaction is missing for you?
Since others have been able to produce bookcases (and have had them working, apart from the eternal book caressing bug [now fixed]) the issue is probably not a general one. I've used the LNPs up until and including 0.43.03 with no issue (valuing a workding 32 bit DT more than the LNP for the current version), and have had no problem, so the LNP is unlikely to be the cause.

It seems you're messing with recipes: can you perchance have made an error somewhere that caused the bookcase one to fail to work?
I'd recommend downloading a fresh DF version (included in the LNP or otherwise), install it, create a new game in it, and see if you can make bookcases. If you can, add your mods, start a new game, and see if you can make bookcases.

Another question is where you try to make the bookcases: are you sure you're looking at the correct workshop (or, in the case of metal ones, the correct sub menu). You can also see if the manager contains bookcases to bypass the workshop issue.

Saves from 0.40.24 and earlier do not have bookcases, and any hacking to get them to be introduced into such saves will be your expedition into a poorly explored territory (with a rather limited chance of getting any books to place in the bookcases anyway, should the functionality to "build" them be supported).

This current save in 43.05, came from 43.03 and was a new embark, I use no mods, I only change the default graphic pack and away I go. Also this 43.05 is a new install. The bookcase is also not in the save 43.03. At the time I figured it was just not implemented yet, so I ignored it, come 43.05 and I notice its mentioned in the wiki, so I figured it is in the game. Yet, it still does not work. The only mention of bookcase in the game is in the in-game build menu, it does not appear in any workshops, same goes for scrolls etc. Even in <j> jobs, <m> manager it does not appear.

As for the file editing, I am only editing what I have researched, for all I know, there could be more references to it in other raw files. That I can not be sure of as I have not found much more than that. So far all I have done is created a new save which contains the recipes in the item_tools and entity_default files, and copied/overwritten it to my broken save, loaded the game up in the hopes it would work, but no luck. I can only guess there may be more raw files that need to be edited.

I have not dabbled in modding with dwarf fortress before this, if someone else can explain what I am missing and why bookcases refuses to work, It would be appreciated. I guess all I really need to know is which raw files contain all references to everything related to the bookcase. I don't want to re-invent the wheel if someone else has already done it.

Basically, I am trying to avoid starting all over, this is my first successful fort ever in all the embarks I have done and am currently 6 years in. Boy what an embark it has been, and am really enjoying it. If I was to start this all over because of some stupid bug, it will probably be the last time. Yes my loss, but time is precious to me.

Thanks for the reply

DF Gameplay Questions / Bookcase still not working
« on: August 05, 2017, 04:42:47 am »
Hi All,

Just been reading through all the bookcase issues. I actually started a whole new game because of this feature, only to realise the feature is not working. Upon further investigation, looking through the raws, item_tools and entity_default, the game version (43.05) does indeed contain the recipe, even the previous version (43.03), which I just had a look, and the recipe has been removed from both save games.

I'm starting to think this is a lazy newb issue, does lazy newb remove that?

Also how would I go about fixing my save so I can bring the bookcase recipe back in? I have tried just copying a good save with the bookcase recipe in the save into my existing save, but still no go.
Apart from item_tools and entity_default, are there any other files I need to copy or edit for this to work?

Ive had enough of starting new forts all the time, and its time consuming.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The biggest library
« on: October 19, 2016, 12:11:46 am »
I would love to make a library. But there is no option to create a bookshelf in any of the workshops. Has the feature been implemented into 43.03? I created a tavern no prob. Haven't tried a temple yet.
That's because it is bookcase.

That said, they - and containers - are used purely for storage in libraries. Discussing or reading needs nothing, and I think writing needs at most materials, table and chair.

Just double checked, nope, don't have any of those recipes. Anyone know how I can fix this issue? I hope I don't have to start again, 6 years in on my first successful fort.

Bonus points for your list brary if you have an Orang Utan in residence, a kindly (until she isn't) old lady ghost, a breakfast club, a Vampire Slayer hanging around with some Scoobies, shadowy air-pirhanas and a big "X" marking a spot where entry to the sewers might be found.

I would really like to see walking containers as a craftable option.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarves are kind of boring now.
« on: October 18, 2016, 11:55:57 pm »
Well, My fort is far from boring, its like a game of thrones. You must be just unlucky, or lucky, depending on how you look at it. I can't leave my fort alone for 5 seconds or something goes wrong.

Just opened up a tavern, with in 1 min my cook got murdered while serving food. After checking the death log, as I like to call it, one of my well trained wrestlers in the military, got enraged and punched the poor cook in the head, opening up an artery and the cook bled out and was dead. Sprayed blood over 3 tiles including the wall. On another occasion another miltiary wrestler, not sure if it was the same dwarf, will be keeping an eye on this one, also got enraged and punched one of my herbalists in the head and also bled out due to an opened artery.

Also not to mention the numerous werebeast attacks, kidnappings and missing children, animals, dwarves and the like. Catsplosion, dogsplosion's, you name it, I got it. Atleast my dwarves don't need to worry about meat anymore. "Looks like meat's back on the menu boys".

Also thanks again jecowa for the dfhack config. Got it all working.
Needed it so I can slowly remove all the setup I have going already and start using the built in one. Got so used to this way, still is quicker than the built in way but I will have to test out the in built way and transition across.

Anyone know what the hotkey is for using the dfhack workflow plugin on the Mac. I know Alt + w is for windows. Same hotkey does not work for me on Mac. That is if the plugin is actually working? I loaded in the dfhack console, says it is loaded.

Anyone on Mac using workflow plugin that can help me out?

I'm not very familiar with workflow, but it looks like the shortcut key isn't included by default anymore. I think they might be phasing it out now that vanilla has something similar. Here's something that shows what to add to your "dfhack.init" file to re-add the Workflow shortcut keys that were removed (highlighted in red/pink).

And while we're talking about Workflow, here's a couple of guides on usage for anyone wanting to know more:

Apart from that everything is running good, it actually performs better on my mac then on windows, graphics packs working good, no missing textures or weird issues like on windows, no lag of death, like on windows.
That's good to hear that it's working well for you. I'm curious about the missing textures on Windows. What textures were missing? Was it just one graphics pack that had the trouble?

My win PC is 4 times more powerful then my mac, yet the win PC lags to death lol. Go the Mac...
I've heard that having the fastest processor isn't the most important thing with Dwarf Fortress; what actually matters most is the CPU cache. I'd be interesting in knowing what model of CPU your Mac and PC have. If don't know the model of CPU that's in your Mac, I can probably figure it out if you tell me the year the Mac was made, the CPU's GHz, the screen size, and what product line it's fom (e.g. iMac, MacBook Air, Mac mini, etc).

- Cheers, thanks for the info, will read up on them and hopefully get workflow functioning.

- Well, I dont think it was so much the graphics pack, more so LNP. Whenever I would change the graphics pack, the previous pack would bleed into the new pack installed, some items like the down stair case would be an X, or the burial recepticals would be O instead of the graphics and for example, some of the phoebus pack would be working for the walls, etc, and then the obsidian pack would be showing for the workshops. Then the lag of death would come and crash the game.

- For windows, its an i7 xeon core E3-1231 3.4Ghz, 8MB cache. For the mac, its a mid 2011 iMac,21.5", which according to the specs is 6mb cache.

Well, I found that a buggy install of graphics packs can cause the fps lag. I also went and moved my saves over onto my iMac 2011 with 16gb ram. Set up a fresh install and no lag, its running awesome. Way better than windows and my windows machine is a xeon core with 16gb ram and a gtx 670 4gb.
I suspect new machines don't run the best with dwarf fortress, but I could be wrong.

Currently running fine with 120 dwarves, roughly 123 animals, half of those animals are dogs, followed by cats then a mixture of your typical grazers. On 43.03. I think cat and dog might soon be on the menu!

« on: October 03, 2016, 12:40:29 am »
Yes, its working good for me, no more lag of death from 120 dwarves and a refuse pile the size of a small state lol. There really needs to be some refuse pile fix, this is getting ridiculous. What do you guys do with your refuse pile when it gets too big?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: October 01, 2016, 08:51:15 am »
This is my first successful fort after many failed attempts, I think it is my 5th fortress. So far so good, until I noticed many strange deaths, and very unusual deaths. Dwarves were just dropping like fly's on a regular basis with no warning. After trying to investigate what was going on, I still had no clue, so I had to use legends viewer for this.

After investigating in legends viewer, I find some very interesting things that I had no idea could even happen. It was kind of a blessing in disguise, you will see what I mean in the screen shot below. Pay close attention to the first 6 deaths. There was also 3 deaths prior to this by a werebeast, but that werebeast was short lived and the dwarf and werebeast both killed each other.

I suspect the first six were bitten, which would transmit the curse and turn them into werebeasts. They bled out, probably before they ever transformed (transforming would have fixed the bleeding out thing). The other three "were struck down by Nawara with a (6528)." I suspect (6528) is computer code for something Nawara picked up and was beating/stabbing/etc. people with.

Check out your combat reports.

Ah ok, cool, good thing they bled out then. Still learning a lot about this game, even though I have put many hours in. I will have to investigate the combat log. Thanks
