DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / DF has invaded my mind.
« on: April 06, 2010, 05:44:32 pm »
My coworker just got up to search for something, but quickly gave up and went back to his meal.  My first thought, word for word, was "John, electrician, canceled search: eating."

issues like this are why I only train my recruits with arena deathmatches.  I usually leave the goblins armed, as well.  More fun that way.

Observe the following setup

7-water
#-wall
X-water goes here?

########  #####

#####7777777####

This is how it should happen, right?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Free stuff!

Whenever merchants leave my fort, the last wagon always seems to get mauled by the local wildlife, resulting in free stuff for me.

DF Gameplay Questions / Idiot dwarves, GET BACK TO WORK!!!
« on: August 01, 2008, 02:28:51 am »
One of my dwarves happened to be outside when an ambush came, he got killed, and everyone got all capitalistic over his stuff.  In order to save their lives, I drafted literally every dwarf into the military, and put them all in one squad (except for the real military), and stationed them inside.  Two things went horribly wrong, and I need help fixing them:
1: they went in the completely opposite direction
2: after un-drafting them, nobody will go back to work

the first one isnt so bad, but the second is really bad...I have fortress-critical stuff that needs finishing before the river thaws

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / oops...
« on: March 27, 2008, 05:11:00 pm »
I'm a new player, so this came as a bit of a shock...
So here's a rough side view of what I was trying to do:
# - wall
~ - water
W - well
X - floodgate
L- lever connected to floodgate

#~~~~~~~########
#########    WL#
#### ######## #
####      X   #
###############

I was going to mine out the bottom of the river, then close the floodgate when the miner got by, to keep water pressure from flooding my fortress.
Well, the moment the miner broke the the rock, water burst forth, drowning him almost immediately, and sweeping away the Dwarf who was supposed to pull the lever.  With nothing to stop it, the water flooded my whole fortress, drowned both miners, and stranded the rest of them.

I am NEVER making that mistake again.  But hey, losing is fun, right?

quote:
its hung off the spikes of cave spider silk like talismans. the real question is how do they make the cave spider silk hard enough to make spikes from it?

It's gelled into spikes, just like the hair of the person who would wear this.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / D-FENCE!

What sort of clever/sadistic/unfair traps have you guys built?  I'm not talking about a hall full of weapon traps, I'm talking about the really clever stuff, that takes some real engineering and planning.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Levers
« on: March 27, 2008, 02:40:00 am »
I organize my levers based on location and position.  Each type of function has it's own control room.  For example, the front gate (and corresponding room-flooding trap) has a control room, with the lever in the back operating the inner doors, the lever in the front, the outer doors, and the lever in the middle, the hatch in the ceiling connected to a lake.
Also, each farm's irrigation system has it's own control room, each deathtrap room has it's own control room, each magma channel has it's own control room, etc...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Drop their pick

The picks are sitting in the stockpile, the miners are no longer on military duty, but they still won't grab the picks and mine.

DF Gameplay Questions / Drop their pick
« on: January 10, 2008, 12:44:00 am »
When Kobolds invaded, I accidentally had my miners put down their picks and pick up swords, and now they wont pick the picks back up so they can keep mining.  I'm running low on stone and I need them to get back to work!

DF Gameplay Questions / Party!
« on: January 07, 2008, 11:24:00 am »
My Dwarves won't...stop...partying!
It's annoying me, because half of them are thirsty, and they won't build the f***ing well, the traders are here, and the broker is at a party!
This always happens during the first autumn, just as the traders arrive.
I want to know if there is a way to cancel parties, and I don't care how pissed off the Dwarves get...there's work to do!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't Trap Muskox

Yep, that was it.  Now how do I get them to mate so I can eat their children?

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't Trap Muskox
« on: January 07, 2008, 12:20:00 am »
I have two muskoxen(sp?) wandering around in my fortress, and the cage traps I set aren't working.  I built the trap, but when the muskox walks across it, nothing happens.
Help please?
