DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Spreading Knowledge
« on: June 12, 2018, 09:14:13 pm »
Hey everyone,

I've been running my fort of Conflictgild since year 2, for about 35 years now. A peculiarity I've found about starting with such a short history is that no one else in the world has produced any visitors to come to my fort, and I'm guessing there are few if any scholars in other sites. I've put a few dwarves to work philosophising about funnels and levers, and have 6 books on the subjects, but I have no one to share my newfound knowledge with! So, my question is this: can I export my books to other sites or civs in any way? I can't send them to my trade depot or stockpile them in a bin, whether they're stored in the form of a scroll, quire or bound book (I made a platinum-bound one just to try it). Does anyone know a way to get my writing into a trader's wagon?

As an aside, is there any way to check up on the scholarly enterprises of other civs in the world?

There are known methods for assisting the formation of marriages and for married (hetero) couples to procreate. Those methods work well for dead civs (assuming you're not rather unlucky so you don't get enough potential couples to get started due to age differences, sexual preferences, and personality quirks).

Where are they? I've searched before, and the only methods I found were outdated and don't seem to work in the current version.

I've been playing a fortress starting at year 2 lately and am now at year 28. I haven't had a single visitor this whole time, nor have there been any marriages (a married migrant couple arrived at one point, but they've only had one baby in about 20 years). You'll need to work out how to overcome these difficulties if you want a multi-generation fort. Good luck!

As an aside, if you set up a library you can probably become the most advanced scientific institution in the world in a couple of years. I've got lots of books on the workings of levers and funnels, I like it~

Unfortunately it's not a bug that can be fixed easily. It's usually triggered when a merchant gets scared by seeing corpses, scuttles their wagon and runs away--the others usually follow, but sometimes they just freeze. Deconstructing your depot will cause them to leave, but I don't know of a way to get them to trade with you.

You can expect to see a lot more of them--I had a fort accumulate 30 or 40 of them in just a few years. I've also had one without a single visitor in 20-ish years, but I think that's because I only generated 2 years of history for that world, and none of the civs had any time to create monster hunters. That, or my location is just too boring for them (calm surroundings).

You updated. I didn't think you would. Armok help you, you've unleashed something far more destructive than any fiendish monster from the darkness.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dog Breeding?

You may have reached the cap dor tame dogs in your fortress. If you kill a few off, they should start breeding again. The cap is around 50, and they can exceed it, but breeding only happens if they're below it.

Oh, no just the hydras. I suppose I could start taming and breeding the rocs and regular dragons but that would slow down the fort and I’d rather not get into egg management again.
Wait a minute, you successfully bred hydras? How did you keep your dwarves from trying to kill them?

IIRC, if the hydras never attacked (that is, went into combat with) a member of your civ then they won't be hostile when you train them.

There's currently a bug that makes military dwarfs always hostile to megabeasts. It's possible to work around it if you're careful, but very difficult. Not like that's ever bothered Sethatos :P

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Room Management
« on: May 20, 2018, 08:37:13 pm »
While I don't know any scripts that will help, I do know a workaround: just leave them with rooms unassigned and let them claim a new one every time they want to sleep. Many people don't know, but if a dwarf wants to sleep and there's an unclaimed bedroom somewhere, they'll just take it. IF you want to give them better bedrooms than your other citizens, it may be an issue, but you could just make sure that all the civilian bedrooms are assigned to civilians, and they'll take the desired bedrooms automatically.

Not very satisfactory, but it's workable.  :-\

None of them died or suffered injuries, I'm pretty certain they just melted the door with their body heat.

You can also try to get as many biomes as possible in your embark, as each one has its own separate population of each type of critter. Other options include embarking near goblin sites and/or towers, and reanimatimg biomes, all of which come with good helpings of Fun ;)

Okay, I tried it again and the trap definitely worked, I could see the spike appearing and retracting in the same tile as a big group of clowns. Maybe I'll try a minecart grinder instead? I made lots of lead minecarts for the purpose...

Oh, and Bumber, the wiki says repeat exposure to dragon fire will eventually melt candy! I'm amazed. What next, trolls breaking down constructed walls?

I thought that dodging produced combat reports? I also didn't observe any of them moving tiles while I watched--many of the adjacent spaces stayed empty the whole time. I was hoping to get someone else to confirm that it doesn't work so I could it it in the wiki--there's always a chance I've made some dumb mistake like pulling the wrong lever... I'll see if I can see them raising and retracting using q, I didn't think of that before. I'd be surprised if they were prevented from raising, but it's possible.

Hey everyone,

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Signed up today to say, this is awesome! I've heard people floating the idea of a 1000-year-old fort before, for dragon breeding, but I never thought I'd see someone actually try it! (I think dragons had a 1000-year childhood back then.)

Anyway, you've inspired me to try it myself and I've started up a 2x2 fort with 40 dwarves. I'm only at year 7 and I'm already running into problems. Many of my dwarves are overall unfocused or distracted, they won't use my (small, non-specific) temple to pray even though they're upset about not praying, and I also can't get anyone to marry--they won't even idle in my shared bedrooms! Without any active meeting areas! How do you deal with this?

PS if there's a guide out there for keeping all your dwarves' needs met, please point me towards that. I haven't been able to find one myself.
