How can you tell where a goblin settlement/fort is on the map when you pick your starting location?

Seems I don't have any flux stones. Was sure I had mined some... Now I feel stupid. I'll have to dig around and hope I find some.

DF Gameplay Questions / Pig Iron problem
« on: February 06, 2008, 02:50:00 pm »
First, I want to apologize for asking so many questions, I've been trying many new things with DF lately and seem to hit bugs/problems everywhere.

I used to be happy with iron and didn't bother trying to make steel, but today I felt like it and checked the wiki. It said that I could make pig iron at a smelter, weird thing is that in the list of things I can make at the smelter Pig Iron does not show up, I have 3 different ores for iron and enough iron bars to make a tower. Is making pig iron bugged or am I missing something?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Problems with fortifications
« on: February 06, 2008, 10:52:00 am »
Yes. shooting through Z-levels works just fine, and since the enemy archers cant get near the fortifications you have a better chance of hitting them than they have to hit your marksdwarves. I was making some kind of castle with 4 towers, can't wait for the elves to get pissed at me for stealing all their stuff and have a siege on my hands.

DF Gameplay Questions / Problems with fortifications
« on: February 06, 2008, 01:15:00 am »
I was making towers, the first level had normal walls but the second and third levels would have walls for the corners and fortifications for walls, everything went well until I reached the third floor and tried building. Seems fortifications don't build floors above them so I didn't have access to the corner tiles to build walls, so I built floors to access them. Problem is you cant build fortifications or walls on refloors, so I designated for them to be removed, the weird thing is that it dropped the stone from the floor into the fortifications below them and it looks lame and I cant remove the stones. Is there a way around this or is the only way to remove the walls and rebuild?

Thanks for letting me know that they breed correctly.

Also another question. I found that sometimes when I build double doors (2 doors next to each other) sometimes one of the doors just doesn't show up even though it is supposedly there. Is this a bug? Does the door still function normally or will stuff pass through?

DF Gameplay Questions / keeping animals in one place

Is there a way to keep all my tame animals in one place or at least inside my fortress so they don't go running all over the place outside and get butchered by the wildlife? I know I can put them in cages but I heard something about animals not breeding when in cages being a bug.

DF Gameplay Questions / Starting positions for good action?
« on: February 02, 2008, 04:02:00 am »
I have been fairly successful with my fortresses so far, but I am now looking to make a fortress somewhere less peaceful for more fun. I was wondering, what would a good starting spot, where I can get enough action to enjoy myself but not so much that I get obliterated at the beginning, look like?

Basically I am looking for a place where my military dwarves can have a use without being doomed from the start.

I was hoping there was an other way but if this is the only I'll try that, thanks.

DF Gameplay Questions / Choosing a material?
« on: January 30, 2008, 08:36:00 am »
In the older versions of Dwarf fortress I remember there was an option in the mason's workshop to choose what kind of stone to use, I badly need to make obsidian blocks but the mason will just pick a random stone.
How can I choose the material to use for the mason's workshop now?

DF Gameplay Questions / Any way to fix a broken dwarf?
« on: June 10, 2008, 12:00:00 pm »
My armorsmith got into a fey mood and created an artifact, the problem is that right after going out of fey mood his name in the unit list changed to "inactive" and now he just grows stuff in the fields rather than forge armors.

Is there any way to fix this? Could Dwarf Companion make it go back to normal?

Edit:
Nevermind, DF crashed a few minutes later... one and a half year of work to restart.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Berserking noble questions
« on: February 20, 2008, 01:34:00 am »
It would make sense that they don't count as nobles anymore, I know, but I don't know whether the game still sees them as such or not. I guess I'll have to test it or maybe someone who knows for sure will post before I get results.

DF Gameplay Questions / Berserking noble questions
« on: February 20, 2008, 12:24:00 am »
I was thinking of trying something. Getting my nobles to go berserk, then get them  stuck in a cage, and keep them in a noble zoo. This , however, brings up a few questions.

1. Can nobles go berserk? (all my nobles met their end through water or lava)
2. Are berserk dwarves considered hostile and will they activate cage traps and get caged?
3. Will berserk nobles still count as nobles or will a new one come next immigrant wave?
4. Will a caged berserk noble still be considered a noble?

If the answers to all those questions are yes I think I'll have a nice way of making the nobility much more enjoyable.

DF Gameplay Questions / Mason Question
« on: February 19, 2008, 04:09:00 pm »
I have turned many new immigrants into masons and made my mason's workshop only let a certain skilled mason work at it.

The problem is that I am building a gigantic city above ground and that the skilled mason is constantly building walls/floors with the peasants instead of manning his workshop.

Is there any way to have the skilled mason not do any of the construction work and keep working at his workshop, other than locking him in the workshop with food/booze/stone?
