DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't get melt object to work
« on: January 17, 2017, 08:15:38 pm »
I believe the issues lay in stockpile links. I cleared all of them, and things seem to work now (although of course my tidy storage plan is all chaos now). As far as I could tell everything was set up properly, but I guess I missed something somewhere.

In other news, I asked them to smelt up a bunch of limonite ore. They decided that was impossible even though there is ore and charcoal everywhere, but that they were now willing to melt down all those swords. No idea what's going on but they are now doing what I want

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't get melt object to work
« on: January 17, 2017, 02:14:40 pm »
Came back to DF after a fairly long break...downloaded newest version, everything seems fine. Training up my metalsmith, I want to melt all the crap he has made. Designated 100 steel short swords to be melted down, have plenty of charcoal, but game insists it "needs melt designated item".

When I look in the stocks menu, or at the object on the map, it displays as being (M)elt designated, so I don't understand the issue. Did something change?

Thanks

DF Gameplay Questions / What is the best way to move ore to the surface
« on: November 19, 2014, 10:05:35 pm »
As the title said...what is the fastest/most efficient way to move ore or other materials from deep in the ground to the surface or near surface?

I've been playing with mine carts, and although I can't make them work the way I want, I also feel that by the time I get a system designed that runs deep enough to be of any use, my dorfs could have just hauled the stuff by hand. And frankly I don't want to take the time designating out a minecart elevator.

So what am I missing here?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves won't recover wounded

I had an alert on when the wound occured, which would have prevented him from being recovered. After the alert was turned off, still no one recovered him.

He did eventually get to the hospital, unfortunately it happened when I wasn't paying attention so I don't know if he struggled in by himself or if someone grabbed him.

Well I've got dwarves around with "No Job" and recover wounded enabled, but they don't seem to do anything. I'll hunt through and see if I can find some more compassionate ones and see if they'll bring him back.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves won't recover wounded
« on: January 02, 2014, 12:15:31 am »
Hey guys...for some reason my dwarves won't recover wounded. Haven't had this problem before so I'm not too sure why they won't do it. I have a hospital with spare beds and so on, but they just refuse to go out and get the poor bastard.

Any ideas

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your best artifact ever

I was getting prepared to start forging some adamantine battle axes, but unfortunately I had no legendary weaponsmiths yet, and didn't want to waste adamantine on anything but the highest craftsmanship.

Fortunately, a dorf was kind enough to have a mood, and build me The Frigid Toes, a adamantine battle axe. worth 1,640,400 dorfbucks.

They are currently iron battleaxes, although the nice shiny adamantine ones are next up on the forge, so we'll see what happens with them.

silly gobbos keep passing out after all their limbs are hacked off. wimps.

oops I meant to put this in the questions forum, sorry if that inconveniences anyone.

I don't have a problem with them aiming for the head, I understand that is what is supposed to happen. What I don't understand is how a legendary axedwarf (for that matter, legendary axe, fighter, shield, armor, etc) is getting deflected by a leather hood literally hundreds of times in a row. Seems like something has to be going on here.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / combat bug?
« on: January 13, 2013, 06:48:47 pm »
I've been noticing a recurring theme in a number of battles I have had so far: soldier focusing on the head, and repeatedly getting deflected by whatever the foe is wearing. This might sound reasonable...but it seems to be running rampant.

Ive got a number of legendary axe dwarves, and noticed one of them taking forever to kill a goblin swordsman in the last seige. I examined the combat reports, and found that there was three pages of  my axedwarf hacking the gobbo in the head, and bruising the head through the leather hood. The dwarf never struck anywhere except the head, which is good, except that he was not able to do anything except bruise the goblin.

I've seen similar behavior a number of times. Tyipcally, the dwarf incapacitates the goblin, the goblin falls unconcious or is stunned, and the dwarf begins beating away at the goblin head, never leaving a scratch. I have not yet seen the dwarf then manage to kill the goblin, instead the goblin has to be killed by another dwarf joining the fight later on.

I once even had a number of low skilled recruits and similar get stuck doing the same thing to a yak (I think). There were literally 3 or 4 dwarves around hacking away at the yak head, with no success.

Anyone noticed something similar?

I engrave their bedrooms, build some nice gold statues in the hallways, and build any artifact furniture that might come along in the dining room. This seems to do alright as long as i keep casualties to a minimum.

I'll experiment with that, thanks.

hmmm...they have archery targets, but they don't use them hardly at all because they aren't carrying bolts. Pretty sure they aren't using them all up, because I haven't seen a significant drain on my stocks.

DF Gameplay Questions / Marksdwarves won't carry bolts consistantly
« on: January 08, 2013, 10:43:38 pm »
I've got stacks and stacks of metal, bone, and wood bolts, and bolts enabled on the military screen for any material, training and combat, yet I cannot seem to make my marksdwarves carry them...at least not all the time. Typically out of a squad of 9 dwarves, only one or two actually have any bolts. They all have quivers.

What am I missing here? Ive never encountered this issue before.

I know in the previous versions (quite awhile ago now I guess), only metal bolts were carried in quivers whereas training bolts were carried in hand, but I havent noticed this in the current version.

Any tips?
