I see, thanks!

I’ve danced with dingos to the point of being untouchable and now I’m parrying a bandit who’s wielding an iron spear to train my axe skills.

I ran into the problem in Fortress Mode that the enemy civilization has too many web-shooting elephant demons for me to conquer them in Fortress Mode, so I created some steel and adamantine gear and switched to Adventure Mode. Now I’m trying to train my adventurer into an unstoppable killing machine so that I can clear out the demons in Adventure Mode.

Training my dodge, shield, and armor user skills is going well, but training axe skills with an adamantine axe is proving to be… entertainingly difficult  8)

I’ve outfitted my adventurer in full steel armor and steel shield, plus a cloak and battle axe made of the divine metal, and I’m able to train up dodge by just picking a fight with a dingo and spamming . but I never see parry as an option in the Aim menu. I do see the incoming attacks listed, so I thought my observer skill was high enough. Can you not parry with an axe (and shield), or do I need even higher observer ship to be allowed to parry?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Can you sleep in your own fortress?
« on: October 19, 2022, 12:38:06 am »
Hi y'all!

I've got an adventurer visiting one of my own fortresses, but I don't seem to have the option to ask for permission to sleep there, and when I try to sleep it says I must leave the site before I can rest. Is there a prohibition on sleeping in player forts or am I missing something?

Thanks, I’ll make axes from now on.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Axe or Sword?

I’ve just started harvesting the divine metal of the deep, that weightless indestructible material which some dwarfs believe are the very beard hairs of Armok itself, and I want to make it into slashing weapons for maximum carnage in battle. Would it be better to make axes or swords?

So far, I’ve only made a couple short swords, which seem pretty effective against large monsters but seen to frequently get stuck in the beasts they are stabbing and I’ve not seen any limbs get severed. Would axes also get stuck? Are they any better than swords?

Ok, so I'm going the demon assassin Adventurer route! Here's the training facilty I'm working on (left half of the fortress):

Rooms from upper-leftt, in clockwise direction:
  • Armory
  • Tavern ("The Apple of Iron")
  • Dormatory
  • Store room for provisions
  • Target practice
  • Danger room
  • (center) Battle arena

You'll notice lots of pedestals. That's so I can reserve specific items for the future adventurers (without being claimed by my military dwarves).

Is there anything else you would add?

…youre definitely going to want squads of nothing but legendary+ warriors equipped with full steel gear. But youre going to lose a lot of them.

Yeah… about that. My embark has no metal so I can only get about a dozen or so bars of steel per year via trade caravans  :-[

Hmmm… my desert embark doesn’t have much on the way of big beasties. I’ve been toying with the idea of making an adventurer training facility and going into Adventure Mode to assassinate the demons if they can’t be beat in Fortress Mode, but that could also be used to bring big animals to train from far away lands.

What would you do? Train 50 dwarves to legendary and hope to get lucky, just keep trying with squads that only have 1-2 years of training until eventually one of them gets very very lucky, go adventuring for beasts and mercs, make an assassin adventurer, or something else?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Are Demon Defenders Unbeatable?
« on: August 28, 2022, 03:45:45 am »
Hi there!

I'm trying to conquer a goblin civ that was spawned by digging too deep during world-gen. However, each of their goblin pits and fortresses has at least 2 demons defending it. Every time I try to raid, pillage, raze, or destroy one of their sites, my dorfs hatch a cunning plan and ambush the enemy, kill a couple goblins and then get defeated and killed by a demon.

Can I successfully conquer/pillage/raze their sites with a sufficiently trained army? If so, how do I know when my dorfs are ready to take them on? Or are demons basically unbeatable in off-screen combat?

On a side note, this civ also sends demons along with the goblins when they siege my fortress, and killing them ain't easy.

Hi all,

What is the best way to train up weapon skills as an adventurer who is presently so weak that he couldn’t defeat a beach crab?

13
Training my adventurer in Fortress Mode is a bit boring. Can I train armor and dodging as an adventurer using a trap hall full of wooden weapon traps? And how can I train up disguising under a false name so I can sneak into a goblin controlled fortress without having to fight the whole population?

Hello all,

I like to alternate between Adventure Mode and Fortress Mode, and the idea came to me to use Fortress Mode to build an adventurer training facility. But to be honest, I’m a total newbie with Adventure Mode.

What would be the best (or most fun ;) ) way to train adventurers in a fortress? Do traps and pressure plates treat adventurers as friendly or are they as dangerous to adventurers as to enemies?

If you can’t solve it using the above methods, you could retire your fortress and then reclaim it. That resets most of the fortress management stuff.
