You can... already do this?

Yes, but no.

Name a few? Good potential intervention point.

Individual Job assignments. So, I may have a Work Detail - which is cool, so I can assign Dwarves to broader Categories of Productivity. However, as of yet I can't add or remove individual tasks without creating a separate Work Detail, just and only for that one singular Dwarf.

If there were a totally separate assignment system that doesn't inform you that you have a manually-assigned hunter in the detail, that'd be pretty annoying.

Sortof. But it's not like the game is a stranger to this. I'm also just spitballing ideas because I understand there's a multidimensionality to the problem. What I would like to see is that familiar Level of control. If Dwarf Therapist can dig into that, it's going to be OK, but will also create similar issues concerning how Jobs are managed or resolved.

Sorry, but I'm not a fan of feature loss. There simply is a Level of Freedom that's now missing.

I assume that the Labor Screen thingy toggles individual Job assignments on and off, based on some background magic. And I'm thinking that there's a given freedom to yet go and fine-tune things a little more. Doing it via Work Details seems to be more like a work-around. And if I have more than eight, things get a little bit weird.

Anyhow ... food for thought.

Well ... it's a bit of a conundrum to me.

I've gone about it like so:

In my previous game, I started out creating larger Work Details, like Farmer, Artist or Builder - depending on skills and such. I found that the built-in Labors are quite handy, as it's easy to just toggle them on or off. Like, say, turning Hunting on and Off.

Generally Dwarves will do everything, but I think that if a certain Task is only enabled in Details that are currently on "Nobody Does this", nobody will. So it helps to keep a Work Detail to what it's all about.

Further, I remember Tarn posting about this, it seems to be intended that you rather assign a Dwarf to a certain Workshop if you want them to do something specific. However, if you assign a Metalcrafter but not Blacksmith (as per Work Detail) to a Forge, they'll only do the Metalcrafting Jobs, not the Blacksmithing. Which is OK I think, but a bit wonky given how you can tweak things.

I would like there to be some individual Job screen for each Dwarf - sortof like it used to be. Perhaps make it two checks - one being an individual Profile and one being the settings from the general stuff and you can easily see what is assigned to them Globally and whether or not you want them to do something a little bit different.
So if you turned off Hunting per the Labor Menu and you set a Dwarf to Hunt always ... they'll ignore the assignment per the Labor Menu. For better or Worse.
Eventually however, it'd be nice to also have customizable Icons for the individual Details. It was certainly the biggest Disappointment of the Steam Release.

Overall, in my current game I don't use Details so far. But I don't have a lot of dwarves either. It's however definitely a feature loss that sortof lessens the overall flair of the game. A bit. Since, things you could do you can't do anymore and there be some reason or intention but generally ... I hope it'll come back in.
It's not all bad - as the Dwarves will move around, Dabble a bit in everything - and how that plays out is a bit unclear.

DF General Discussion / Something ... like a Bug Report
« on: January 06, 2023, 06:16:06 pm »
Helloooo ...

Apparently I can't file Bug Reports ... m'Well. What is a Bug and what is a Feature?

Here's the thing: I have a Dwarf here - a Soldier Currently off Duty. She'll run around, collecting all her Stuff, move to the Barracks - throw it all onto an Armor Stand, some stuff doesn't properly get on it, she'll move to her Chest, throw some stuff in and onto it - and then moves on to do it all again, while other Dwarves haul her stuff from the Armor Stand and Chest back into Stockpiles.

I'm sure this isn't a Bug Per Se, but something quite not working out too good.

On another note - I'm not sure how other people see it, but I find it quite annoying that my Bins/Barrels settings reset when I tweak a Stockpile. Also, I could swear they just reset at some point on their own. But that might just be my dwarves being weird. Have been storing lots of worn clothes into an iron only armor stockpile ... :/

And oh, yea. Sometimes the individual Work Orders of a Worship disappear from the Workshop's Work Order list - but are very well still active as shown in the general Work Order screen.

Is there anything known about this?

DF Suggestions / Toady mentioned Prophecies once
« on: January 12, 2022, 08:32:52 am »
not sure if this is the right place ... however: I spotted some flaw in his logic.

The issue with prophecies is not neccessarily one of predicting the future, but producing it. So, integrating prophecies could work by first creating an event. Perhaps take some fragment of a population to create a new site or however that would work; And make it be protected so that nothing can interfere with the projected event - other than perhaps a few means for the player to interact with it. So, any other civ trying to conquer the place, or any monsters trying to do some nasty stuff, or the player trying to raid the place - would essentially be facing off with the powers that intend to manifest themselves. So either the chances to succeed at that would be slim or non-existent.

DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress

Some graphics related questions:

1. The transition between z-levels and ramps still look a bit jarring to me. Are there any plans to add graphics or add shadows to destinguish levels from each other?
2. Looking at the new workshop design I'm curious: Are they single graphics or are they compositions? So - if I changed the graphics of the Lever, would that also change how the Lever on the Mechanics workshop looks?
3. I have to know: Will bars, grates and glass be see-through, so I could see what's below?
