Life Advice / Re: It is finally time. (Tech-y People, help me out.)
« on: February 06, 2010, 01:02:50 pm »
If you're american and you have $150... go to www.newegg.com - I second an ati 5750 as the best in that price range. I'd link you to a specific one but I'm posting from my phone.

I'm updating one of my media servers soon and I'm going to get a 5770. When it comes time to upgrade my main desktop I'm going to steal the 5770 from the server and crossfire a second 5770 with it in my desktop. Desktop currently has a sapphire ati 4850 X2 single card in it.

It's kind of retardly awesome and ridculous how two 5770s at $175 each outperform all of nvidia and ati's best single cards except for the 5970, which is a 5870 X2 essentially, and that is almost $600.

Ooh watch out, xfire can be a big ol' mess sometimes. Nonetheless, two 5770s is definitely a steal if you have the PSU and the mobo for it. And make damn sure you've got good cooling or else you could have a problem.

DF General Discussion / Re: How do you cope?
« on: January 31, 2010, 01:42:31 pm »
I still play a while every day, the key was slowly building it down, first 16*hours/day, then 15, then 14, and so on.

*Your starting number may vary.
True, I started with 32 hours per day.

Yeah, I bent time just so I could play longer too. I went to 35 hours though, got a nice new flux capacitor so I can do that.

You think that's evil?
Spoiler: HFS (click to show/hide)

It's.. It's so wrong.

ALSO, IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE HAVE BEEN AFFECTED WITH ONE OF THE FOLLOWING DISEASES DURING EXPOSURE TO ASBESTOS, THEN WE MAY BE ABLE TO HELP. ZEROX AND SOKOBOLD: CLERKS AT LAW.

Maybe, but could you then build it?

Safe-Keeper: Nah, that you can prevent purely through caution.

Caution?
Caution?
One sec...
Ah!
"alertness and prudence in a hazardous situation; care; wariness"
Wow. what a strange, foreign word to me and my Dwarves.

Honestly, I'm on the fence about the heads on stakes. As Footkerchief has pointed out, dwarves are preset in the raws NOT to put sentients on stakes (Purposefully) but then again, should that dictate what the player can or cannot do on accident? With a terrible, unfortunate "misstep" resulting in Elf-kebobs?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Eternal wagon meeting area
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:26:00 am »
I've always actually had success going into the zone menu and using the "remove zone" feature right where my wagon was, or in a broad general area where I think it was, when I forget.(almost all the time. I typically remove the wagon as a first order of business after mining a food stockpile) Works like a charm.

Did you scroll down? It is on the second page, I believe.

If not, that's very interesting.

if you aren't in a savage biome, why have a hunter at all?

Oh god. Not those blasted creatures...
Turn their fat and sinew to soap and build a statue of one over a pit of lava and drop it in a a sacrafice to armok. It's the only way to survive.

"Rotation speed"

So, you could make a flinging machine, a blender, or a nice little safe slowly rotating bridge.

Personally, my strongest dwarf is always my captain of the guard. They're trained right from the first immigration wave. That way, if a dwarf truly needs punishment (see below on how I fix demand-friendly nobles) he's gonna die. No sitting in his room forever with a neck injury mooching food and water.

(When ever they make demands, unfortunate accidents happen to my rose gold friendly nobles,)

DF Suggestions / Re: Remove the minimap.
« on: January 18, 2010, 11:33:32 pm »
Oi. Well, sorry If I seemed a little biased. It just seemed that from my experiences, no one uses the minimap. I guess no one really talks about it, then. Well, perhaps the option to turn it off in the init file at least. Just for me. >_<

And yes, i do tend to settle smaller-sized forts, but I've had my share of big ones.

(No more suggesting things on 5 hours of sleep for me.)

DF Suggestions / Remove the minimap.
« on: January 18, 2010, 06:41:49 pm »
Just kill it. Does anyone even USE the minimap?

In case you don't know what it is, it's the thing on the right of the screen that you immediately get rid of with the tab key.

It's simply not useful except in the very beginning of the game if you lose track of your wagon, and it only hurts new players, really, with all of the silly extra stuff it shows.

I'd love to know an actual use for it, but right now it's simply a hindrance to me.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: For science: absurd numbers in the raws

So does this explain why, when I traded multiple extremely high value, 1000 count stacks of masterful dwarf milk roasts, the trader became unhappy and immediately left?

They weren't elves were they?

Personally, I found this one of the funniest and most entertaining stories I've read about DF in a long time. Well done,  o-my oh-noes. Well done indeed.
