Thanks a lot to both Telgin and anewaname. Didn't know about the relative values. I shudder when I imagine all the massive data mining has been done to make DT or DFHack possible.

Dwarf Therapist and DFHack (and other utilities) have been so commonly used for so long, that they are practically a part of the game as far as the community is concerned.

Yes, thanks. I wasn't so concerned about the cheating aspect (more of an academic question, really). But I'm still curious about how these apps collect their data. Are they perhaps using existing interfaces for modding?

I wonder how certain apps like DwarfTherapist can read all these exact numbers, none of which seem to be visible to the player on the UI. Isn't that some kind of cheating? For example, I would have no idea until today that there are also homosexual dwarves (and how modern the game actually is). Or things like 85.6% agility. Where do you see that? Or did I just miss something and the UI does show these things somewhere?

Edit: I guess "cheating" is a bit harsh in this context. Replace it with "exploiting"

Only if quality correspondences to wear level, in which case you simply could use the quality filters?

No, no such exotic biome. Just the usual "was annoyed when caught in the rain"

update:
In the meantime I have found out that some animals can very well leave the pasture under certain circumstances. But all of them? Anyway, I'm still pretty new to this game and there's certainly a lot I don't know yet or maybe just overlooked.

That surprises me a little bit now. My "not so scientific method" consisted of an extensive roof that completely enclosed a larger pasture. Inside that pen, there was still a walkway formed by walls to a well, and on top of that well was the entire roof structure. Strictly speaking, a static nightmare, which, when I began to dismantle the roof again from the outside (because I urgently needed the resources) developed into a real one. (I desperately needed a hospital at that point, and even more so now, after the whole thing broke apart.) Anyway, all the animals that had lived under that structure during the existence of the roof (maybe a few months) showed the typical signs of creatures that have been exposed to rain.

  • Does a roof provide protection from rain? From my own, not exactly scientific observation, I would say that the answer to that is no. Is this correct?
  • Are there other points in building a roof besides role-playing, decoration or building a tower? Such as protection from attacks from above of a Roc for example?

Another beginner question, if I may. My fortress is now in its 3rd year and is getting dangerously out of hand. Biggest problem: it's flooded with babies and children (38 out of 85 total citizens!). I'm trying to limit the baby boom through the settings page now, but I wonder if there might also be a rational reason for this kind of excessive fertility. My current working theory is that I've left too many dwarfs unemployed for too long. Is that a possible reason or am I just making things up?

On that occasion, I would also like to know if it is normal or an extreme exception for a 3 year old child to successfully build an artefact after a strange mood and now be a legendary woodcrafter? Which will most probably amount to a tragic waste, as I hardly trust myself to keep this fortress up long enough for this child to finally become an adult.

I just about fell off my chair laughing when I read about the dwarven sock obsession. ;D That was in the Wiki, on which I am still very much dependent as a beginner. However, many articles still refer to the original version. Is that still a thing in the Steam version?

Can cats work on projects?

One of my cats has a name, is not a stray and has already adopted a dwarf. He is 0 years old, which suggests he arrived with the recently arrived caravan. A line in his personality sheet states, he tends to be a bit wasteful when working on projects.

What does this mean? Is it possibly related to his dwarf's profession (Record Keeper) or are there other things that I can't think of right now. Like hunting for bugs or making a mess as a project in a cat's eyes?

This is a total beginner question, so please bear with me. I don't even know if this question is really a simple one. I could provide an image if allowed and requested.
