DF Bug Reports / Re: [40d] Dwarf Fortress won't run
« on: June 28, 2009, 08:36:06 pm »
Ok, I guess it isn't the new catalyst drivers, I put DF on another box that had the exact video card as me, and was running 9.3 Catalyst drivers, and it worked just fine, I even switch cards just for good measure.

[edit] at this point it isn't even a Dwarf Fortress issue, never mind I suppose.

Alright, I guess it is the new Catalyst drivers, or at the very least, my video card.

I managed to get Catalyst ver. 8.6 on my computer, and the game can run, but I'm only getting 7fps on the intro, I don't even want to see how the actual game runs.  Afterward, I back-tracked even further and installed ver. 8.11 (which I believe are the drivers that came shipped with the Sapphire X1650) but nothing noticeable changed.  If someone more tech savvy then myself could help me with my OpenGL problem, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks Untelligent, I completely forgot about that...

[edit]
Good gravy, there appears to be an issue with atioglxx.dll which means it could very well be an issue with the new 9.3 catalyst driver.  Come to think of it, while I don't have issues running games like Mount & Blade or Oblivion, I was having issues running the Skulltag Doom port with anything other than software rendering...

[yet another edit]
Damn, I decided to download Catalyst driver version 6.11 in an attempt to OpenGL to function properly, but when I tried to install, I was greeted with this:
"Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration.  Please make sure you have the required hardware or software."

Gah, I've done every little fix I could think of, I've reinstalled my video card drivers, I've reinstalled DX9, scanned my computer for possible virus or malware infection, I even reinstalled .Net Framework because I was desperate...

Save me internet!

You reinstalled XP recently...Did you install your video card drivers, and are they up to date?

Yeah, they're up to date.  ATI just released Catalyst drivers version 9.3 a few months ago which I had never used with my card before, but other DX9 games seem to function just fine so I don't think that is the problem.

When ever I try to run Dwarf Fortress (and this includes the versions preceding 40d) I get this generic, "dwarfort.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."  I've played it before on my system no problem, but it doesn't seem to want to run since I've reinstalled Windows XP recently.

I know my problem is vague, but I really don't know what kind of things I could provide that would be relevant.

At the very least, here is my system specs:
K8N-E Deluxe Asus MB
Athlon 64 2800+
2gb RAM
Radeon x1650

I just finished reading the Headshoots succession game and I was really hoping to get back into DF, thanks in advance.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Filling a tower with water.

The perpetual motion device is beyond our fortress' means, I accidentally burned my trade liaison to death so I never got an anvil...

Also, if physics come into play here, couldn't I just set a dumping zone at the top of the tower, and use rocks to displace water, and thus, bring it up the mountain?

While I do enjoy the idea of having a bucket brigade filling a 9 story tower,  I don't think I have enough free man power to pull that off, at least for longer than a few seasons before the food supply is exhausted.

But I have managed to finally get the materials for the pumps, though I really have no idea how to use them...

Powering a pump with a brook seems like the most sensible thing, but I'm not really sure how I'd get the pump to bring the water upwards, since it only options are east, west, north, and south for the pumps...though I can only assume I would need a vertical axis somewhere?

I was thinking that maybe this would work:

Code: [Select]
77777777777777
777777    7
7777::7   7
     |    []
     *===*[]
          []
          7
          7

7= Water/brook
[]=Water wheel
*= Gear Assembly
(=)= Horizontal axis
|= Vertical axis
:: = Screw pump directed to pump from the north

Is that how it would work?

Provided that the brook itself is higher than the tower, yes. If you meant will it climb from a lower level, no.

But they are dwarves!  Can't they just use a tower to raise the brook over the other tower?

Honestly, the tower was so flawed on such an elementary level, I'm embarrassed that I even started it at all...

I need a find a way to bring a water from a brook upwards, I estimate about 10 z-levels, but I don't really have the materials to make a screw pump, or rather, I have never really used one before.  So would it work to have a brook channeled into a really tall tower and have it slowly climb all the way up?

Ah, so it does.

Welp, I'm a dingus, thanks for the help!

Since I'm new to outdoor constructions, I'm not too sure how to go about doing that...would a floor on completely covering the 2nd level of a "house" count as a roof?

Being that it's Thanksgiving morning I decided to be bit adventurous and do something different, for me anyway, and build my entire fortress outside.  I suppose this is similar to the way human settlements do things, but I don't ever recall finding a bed anywhere in those places...

Anyway, I spent a good three hours building little homes with little wooden floors for my community only to find out that the hovels were still technically "outside" and now my dwarves have really no where to sleep...

Does anyone know of a way to mod DF so that I can create the quaint, farming-dwarf community of my dreams?

 ;D Of course I'll record it, I'll start melting down my armor, see if I can't make a few pickaxes.

Then my channel should be okey dokey then? Neato.  I've been putting off digging all day because the last thing I would want to do is waste 2-4 hours digging only to find I can't destroy it.

The amount of digging is a tad overwhelming, but all my legendary miners got super upset when I drafted them into the military and went ape-shit shortly after our 2nd siege so I'm working with what I got, it's like digging a whole new fortress, but with 2 dabbling miners instead of 3 competent ones...
