- ME1 was rather rough around the edges too, planet exploration dull and Mako driving infuriating at times.

Funny, but I loved driving around on other planets in ME1. I was really disappointed when they removed that from the sequels. Oh, well, different tastes, huh?  :)

Instead of walking/running up to it and pressing a key, you just touch it.

OK, I can probably do that. Not much more, though.  :)

And as long as companions will still use their powers automatically, that should work for me.

Thanks!

Other Games / Re: The "Recommend me a game" thread

Of course, if you're after a zombie survival roguelike, there's always Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. Ah, the feeling of coming home after a long day of looting houses and killing zombies with flaming swords and making yourself a nice cup of tea and reading a skill book by the fire...

Cataclysm: DDA is my go-to game when I'm bored or not feeling ambitious enough to play anything else. I'm always starting a new game with a new character (since I tend to enjoy the early parts of games the most). I love it! But,... I can't play it all the time, and none of the other roguelikes I've played really appeal to me.

Any suggestions? It doesn't have to be a roguelike, but turn-based is best, so I can just lean back in my chair while drinking a cup of coffee. Again, I want something I can play around with when I'm bored. Ideally, a SF game would be great, because I get tired of magic (but I'm not a fanatic about that).

Is there anything even close to Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead? I really love that game - turn-based, exploration, crafting, and the fact that you need some common sense if you expect to live very long (especially when you start with the Very Bad Day scenario - drunk to the point of incapacitation, sick with the flu, infected with a zombie bite, and naked,... and the house is on fire in a city filled with zombies,... and it's snowing outside!).

PS. I've looked at Caves of Qud, though I haven't played it. For some reason, it doesn't appeal to me much. Of course, games are very subjective, and we all have different tastes. I do enjoy UnReal World, though. That might be the closest thing to Cataclysm I've found.

Combat is amazing

Harder? Easier? Combat is the key for me, because I didn't grow up with video games, and I'm terrible at it. I play on the easiest difficulty, and that's plenty for me!

I've played the previous Mass Effect games to completion - twice - but I never once used any of the special stuff in combat. Pointing and shooting is my limit. I left everything else to my companions. Heck, I basically let them kill everything for me.

So if the combat has changed, that worries me. I enjoyed the story in the earlier games. I enjoyed the exploration. I especially enjoyed driving around on other planets in the first game (and I'm really glad to hear that's back - or something like it, at least). But the combat is just something I need to get through as easily as possible.

So, when you say that it's "amazing," could you elaborate on that? Thanks.

DF General Discussion / Re: PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack

Edit: Wow, my bad everyone, it's the 32 bit version of therapist... I forgot I compiled 32 bit versions of everything first... TWBT and DFHack are correct, however.

Is this something I can use for Adventure Mode, since I won't be using Dwarf Therapist for that? I can't play the current version in the Starter Pack (I hope it's just the current version), since the game crashes so often. If not, I'll just wait for a new version. Thanks!

It should work by selecting the old DF dir, but apparently this doesn't work for everyone.  Unfortunately it does work on my computer, so there's not much I can do to fix it. :(

If it matters, I didn't use the popup that asked if I wanted to import an old game when I first started the new version of the Starter Pack. At the time, I'd planned to created a new world. Later, when that failed, I went to the top of the window, to File, where I selected Import from Previous Installation (or something like that) from there.

It probably doesn't matter, but I thought I'd mention it, just in case. (I don't know crap about this stuff.) At any rate, it was easy enough to move the saved game folder manually. I don't know why I didn't do that in the first place. (Maybe because that popup made me think there was more to it than that? I don't know.)

Either way, it wasn't a big deal. Thanks again!

You can copy the saves manually if the importer causes trouble.

Thanks. I guess I was confused and thought that there was more to it than that. (I do know about updating the graphics, since I'll be using a new graphics pack.)

I'm afraid I'm not understanding the new importer.

I get this message after selecting the old DF folder: WARNING: Can only import content from single basedir.

If I don't select the main DF folder, I get: Import failed. Does not seem to be a DF install directory.

This was originally posted as a question in October, but I haven't seen an answer here. I'm having the same problem. Which folder is it asking for, when I try to "Import from previous installation"? Nothing seems to work.

I don't really need my old game, but after two hourse of churning out a new world, the game crashed before I got it saved. So I figured I'd use the world I'd created last May. But I can't get that to work, either.

Still, it's no big deal. I can always try creating a new world with a shorter history. But I thought I'd ask.

PS. This starter pack has always been great. I really appreciate it!

But it takes every single drop of patience you have in your soul, and it's not worth it.

Funny how tastes differ, isn't it? I've played nearly 200 hours of Kenshi already, even in alpha (and normally, I don't play alpha games at all). I was just blown away by this game when I first discovered it.

The new map looks great, although, no, it hasn't been released yet. But I'd have a hard time complaining, even as it is. Indeed, the existing map is beautiful. When the new map is released, it will be like getting a whole new game.

Of course, as I say, tastes differ.

Wow, you were right to warn about the unstable new version!  :)

Admittedly, I don't think it has anything to do with the Starter Pack. (Certainly, I didn't use any of the utilities that come with it.) But I haven't played DF for a year or two, so I decided to try a little Adventure Mode in version 0.42.03. It works great until I decide to save the game. Then it crashes about half of the time. Without saving anything.

OK, I only played a couple of days, so it crashed twice in three, maybe four, saves. But after playing for hours, it's a bit frustrating to lose everything you've done. So I think I'll wait for newer versions.  :)

I love the Lazy Newb Pack, though. It's great! Thanks much!

Mouse wheel.

Oh, that's hilarious! So simple, yet it didn't even occur to me. Thanks much!

Tilesets and Graphics / How do I enlarge true type fonts or... everything?
« on: December 27, 2015, 03:12:51 pm »
I'm playing adventure mode after a break for the past year or two, and maybe I've just forgotten how to do this. But everything on the screen is so tiny, and my eyes aren't what they used to be. Experimenting with the resolution in the Lazy Newb Pack hasn't seemed to help. What am I missing?

I switched to the Spacefox graphics pack, because that seems clearer to me. The images are still very small - smaller than I'd like - but workable, if there's no easy way to enlarge them a bit. But the text was really messed up (and still is, in things like the help windows), so I changed to True Type fonts. That's much clearer, but the text is very, very tiny. How do I enlarge that?

The wiki says I can "Replace font.ttf in data/art with your new font," but I'm afraid I need more information than that. What new font? Where do I get it? Sorry, but I stopped paying attention to this kind of thing when computers stopped using DOS.  :)

It's hell getting old. But better than the alternative, I guess...

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress 40_13 Starter Pack r4
« on: October 03, 2014, 07:07:54 am »
Most of the discussion here goes right over my head. Frequently, I have no idea what you're talking about.  :P  But I love the starter pack, and I love being able to see multiple levels in my fortress (especially since I'm building an above-ground fortress right now). Thanks much!

I also like being able to zoom the text and the map separately. My eyes aren't great, and I need the larger text size. (The text seems very crisp at the default size, but a bit too small for me. It's not nearly as crisp when I enlarge the font, but it gets readable with enough zoom.) Plus, I'm still overjoyed at seeing text, rather than weird graphics for the punctuation.  :)

Admittedly, I'm still using the starter pack launcher. I haven't even looked at the PyLNP launcher. Yes, I know that losing is fun, so I should be more adventurous, huh?  ;)  Then again, don't fix what ain't broke. Heh, heh. Oh, I'll check it out eventually. (Whether or not I'll understand it is another matter.)

Anyway, I just wanted to express my thanks. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into this, both the underlying programs themselves and putting them in a convenient pack like this. Thanks!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dye problems
« on: October 01, 2014, 08:48:34 am »
Needs unrotten dye item means the dyer can't find the dimply dye bags. Check if your stockpile is set to give to a workshop and delete those links.

OK, thanks. I already checked the stockpile, and it's not set to give to a particular workshop. But the dye is in a barrel. There are many different dye bags in the barrel, too, so they might all be in the same barrel. I'll set up a separate stockpile, with no barrels, for dye only.

Thanks for the help!

DF Gameplay Questions / Dye problems
« on: September 30, 2014, 05:23:45 pm »
I'm having trouble getting my dyer to dye cloth and thread. He's done it before, but now, the jobs are cancelled with "needs unrotten dye item." Is that a problem with the thread/cloth, or with the dye? Can you tell?

I've got plenty of cloth, and some thread, in my clothing stockpile, and none of it shows up as already dyed when I look at it. (Plus, my clothier recently stopped making clothes, because I've got the orders set to only use dyed cloth. So the cloth is there, and it's not already dyed.)

I've got plenty of dye in my food stockpile, too. None of it is forbidden, and neither of these stockpiles are set up to feed a particular workshop. I've got no burrows, either. The dyer's workshop is close to both stockpiles, and there's definitely no access problem.

Any ideas? I've run out of things to check.

Thanks.
