DF Gameplay Questions / Volcanoes not very useful?
« on: March 08, 2011, 05:18:08 pm »
In all the 31.21 forts I have generated, the volcano hit the caverns and ends up with the top of the volcano being at the same height as the magma sea. The pipe still rises to many z-levels above the surrounding area, but the actual magma is hard to access. Is there any way to prevent this while still having a cavern layer in world gen?

(this time in the right section)

Edit: Whoops, just saw I posted in the wrong section.

Is English your first language? If it isn't, then no problem. If it is, asking the question in a clearer manner will get you a better answer sooner. I'm not trying to be mean; we do get a large number of people who don't natively speak English.

Anyway, in response to your question, I usually build my first dining room as a giant area above my workshops. I just leave most of it empty and ignored until I get my fortress really going. Dwarves prefer a huge empty space with barely enough chairs and tables to a well appointed but cramped dining room

The meeting room is most effective as a 1x1 square somewhere near the middle of your fortress, so dwarves will level up their social skills ridiculously quickly and be close to all of your jobs. This feels kinda exploity to me, though.

As for the first immigrants, once you have some food production set up, you can pretty much have them do whatever. I'd suggest someone cutting wood, someone making beds, barrels, and bins in the carpenters shop, and someone making stone doors, tables, and chairs in the masons room. Anything else is completely optional, though someone making  some mechanisms and traps is useful.

Nope; at the moment, Constructed walls are hardcoded differently from natural walls, so it would require a change in the source code.

In a slightly modded game (goblins have Can Learn and Can Civ instead of Intelligent, and no Babysnatcher), I've gotten sieges with a fort wealth below 100,000 and less than 40 pop.

Fortifications in walls
This requires you to [d]esignate>c[a]rve the walls, either smoothed natural walls or [C]onstructed walls

Water going down stairs/floor grates
Yes, but rain only fills up murky pools, so rain will never flood your stairways (unless, for some reason, you hook it up to a murky pool)

Floor grates for light
You need every ceiling tile (floor of the z level above) to be a floor grate; built floors also let light through, and dwarves can see in the dark perfectly. The reason to have lit rooms is to avoid cave adaptation.

Support Pillars
A pillar is only necessary if the room has no other support, like a wall or a floor above it. A tower can be infinitely tall and be supported by a one tile wide set of floors from the opposite side of the map.

Caveins
To make a floor stronger, it requires the level below to be a wall, not dug out. I don't know if constructed walls make a floor strong.

Prioritys
If there is, I have no idea.

Raised drawbridges can be used as walls all the way to the edge of a map, I just discovered. That could help with the magma loss.

Definitely the most disturbing thing I've seen so far was a child in my meeting hall. He was standing between two clothing shops, but he was completely naked. However, he had two pages of blood coverings. I immediately retitled him blood child and prepared to make him the leader of my military once he was of age.
