« on: December 01, 2010, 09:28:54 am »
i'm recovering (clean since halloween before last - cataclysm is gonna ruin WoW) but even so, that is epic. pity they didnt name him 'urist'. XD

They didn't, but I did :D Before my old computer crapped out on me I had a Dwarf Hunter named Urist. I was always peeved I couldn't give him green hair...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Smallest sustainable fortress?
« on: November 09, 2010, 05:03:35 pm »
Of course dwarves live a very long time, reproduce every year, and have a 0% infant mortality and disease rate so unless you had some sort of population control (drawbridges...) you'd have hundreds of dwarves by the third generation.

I'm sure the fact that the Dwarves are living in a fortress is population control enough tbh... the terrain, the wildlife, and general dwarfyness seem to keep the population pretty well in check

You do realise that this idea will basically create the Dwarf Fortress 'Bat-Winged-Loony Lobber' right?

The last thing many a dwarf will hear... will be "WEEEEEEEEEEEEE" *SPLAT*

Although, some alterations to the physics engine will be required because of the whole "breaking your fall" thing

Everybody's dead Dave...

Have you dealt with any creatures that have toxic blood/vapour/whatever? Contamination might have got them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Some times the game is to easy
« on: October 11, 2010, 09:44:10 pm »
Aaaaah, 40d. Yeah, that IS the easier version. If you play the 31.-- series, you get much more additional fun in the form of caverns below the ground on all maps and in all terrain. The caverns contain an array of interesting wildlife, both of new varieties and a few you'll be familiar with.
Add to this guaranteed magma and lower regions, and fun is to be had by all. Well, except your dwarves, and who cares about them?

P.S. The above ideas mean that "civilized" races are in fact some parasites on a great body of the world. Elves try to be fair with the world, but other races hate them for that and kill them o_O. It means that we (dorf-lovers and elf-haters) are just a part of a great infection.

Well yeah man, don't you know that life is an STD with a 100% mortality rate?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: New to DF. Help? Please? OH GOD THE MAGMA
« on: October 06, 2010, 09:46:22 am »
Yeah, Mechanics is pretty simple. Some people can do things with it that will make you weep tears of elven blood... but when used normally it's pretty easy.

One of the first things I did with mechanics was use a screw pump to fill a moat. I realised that if I put a water wheel -behind- the screw pump, and connected it to the pump with a trio of gear assemblies and an axle, I could have the pump fuel itself if I used a dwarf to manually pump long enough for the waterwheel to provide power.

Water reactors are just this realisation experimented with, tweaked, screamed at, flooded, burnt, coated in magma, encased in obsidian and with an almighty cry of "FOR !!SCIENCE!!" the current water reactor plans on the wiki were created. They are compact, they are self sustaining, and they are really easy to make.

Of course some of us like to see huge arrays of water wheels powered by artificial rivers, but we're weird.

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.31.14 Released
« on: September 27, 2010, 02:38:43 pm »
While I always love to see new versions, I'm afraid .13 and .14 have been unplayable for me. Quite literally, I can't get the damn thing to start.

I keep getting "failed to start because application configuration is incorrect" error messages. Tried re-installing (well, deleting and redownloading, same dif) and no dice. It's the Windows SDL version if that helps.

DF Suggestions / Re: On poopsmithing and urine.
« on: September 27, 2010, 11:53:19 am »
True. This however, is Dwarf Fortress. If it's a material, and it's in the game, then someone will build either a heaven-splitting tower, clothing, or a death trap out of it.

We all know that urine/faeces as workable materials is not going to happen. Word of Toad has already made this matter clear I think.

While I agree with this on a fortress management level, it does mean that we'll never have to deal with waves of these s***heads (pun intended :P) crawling out of the depths to ravage our forces...

A prospect that has every dwarven cleaner, soldier, and doctor rejoicing in the halls, and a small piece of me dying inside.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Pump Stacks: Not worth the pain?
« on: September 06, 2010, 12:33:28 pm »
I'm really confused now. Do you now require both of the screw pump's tiles to be connected to the one below to transfer power? I've not tried a pump stack in .31 yet so it may just be something I've just not come across, but in 40d at least you could just alternate floor tiles so that every pump was on stable ground, and could transfer power through the 'blocked' tile downover.

Hmm... congratulations. You have just created the Dwarven Megacity One Justice Department.

One must be named Urist McDredd immediately.

This.

My entire response can be summed up as "WTF? Ooookay, lets see what the hell he's on about." *reads Ian's explanation post, and clicks on the link to the 'catsplosion' page. then watches the thermonuclear catsplosion video.*

Ten minutes later after I stop laughing I download the game, read a 'my first fortress' tutorial, and died within about, 5 minutes to rampaging carp. The rest was history
