The idea of using a fortress as a dungeon creator is actually a really good idea and I'm kind of annoyed with myself for not having thought it up already.
As for my own experiences with DF/D&D fusion, all I have to add is that I once wrote up the background for a Dwarf Cleric of mine in the style of a DF dorf's info page.
Dream Rüsheshtén, "Dream Deathsmith", Hammerdwarf
Dream Rüsheshtén has been fine lately. She made a friend lately. She was annoyed by vermin lately. She complained of the lack of chairs lately. She beat somebody with a hammer recently. She shouted at someone in charge recently, and felt better afterwards. She has been evicted lately.
She is a dubious worshipper of kinetic force in general.
She is a citizen of Khaad, the City of Ten Thousand Waterfalls.
Dream Rüsheshtén likes Obsidian, Steel, Moonstone, rat leather, hammers, socks, and bulettes for their resemblance to a certain Carcharhiniform of comedic origin. When possible, she prefers to consume Dwarven Ale. She absolutely detests gelatinous cubes.
She is a risk-taker and a thrill-seeker. She finds helping others rewarding. She does not have a great aesthetic sensitivity. She dislikes contracts and regulations. She is eager for new experiences. She occasionally overindulges. She needs alcohol to get through encounters. She likes working outdoors and grumbles only mildly at inclement weather.
Sadly the game I made her for never really got off the ground.
