While building a bridge over a major river I made a small mistake and had to designate some dwarves to remove some constructed upward staircases. I didn't pay attention and this caused a small collapse, the debris flinging 3 dwarves into the river valley below.
Now, one died almost immediately, another started treading water and the third one... was an accomplished swimmer and seemed fine. My main stairwell into the below ground fortress was nearby, so I just diverted a tunnel into the canyon wall near the hapless dwarves, hoping to rescue them in time.
It worked and both of them made it to the tunnel and fortress.
Unfortunately... I dug the tunnel below the river surface and not above it. The poor saps where now trapped in a fortress slowly filling with water. Fortunately, the miners where with them, so I managed to quickly dig up an escape route to the surface.
I started making some temporary quarters on the surface and immediately below it, while also drawing up plans to divert the water from the stairwell for long enough to build a wall or door and then start the process of draining the main fortress.
After all, wouldn't rescuing your fort like that be the best story?
But, somewhere, I made a mistake and accidentally made it... even... worse. Five more dwarves died, people got depressed and I'm throwing in the towel. Screw the old fortress. I'm digging a new stairwell around it and starting a better one below. Then I'm going back to building that bridge because I really, really like this valley.
