DF Gameplay Questions / Making bedrooms...
« on: October 17, 2008, 11:08:37 am »
... is absolutely annoying. Right know, I can't stand it. Usually, every of my dwarves has his/her own bedroom. But after a few immigration waves... it's getting really hard to motivate me to dig out more of these 4x4 rooms, constructing beds for them, placing them in there and of course: assigning them. WHAH !

Do you feel about that the way I do or how are you dealing with this ? And would my dwarves actually mind if they were... sleeping together in one huge barrack ? Like a big pyjama party ? Except for the nobles of course.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / World gen ! Any ideas ?
« on: October 17, 2008, 04:12:50 am »
Hey guys,

Yesterday I've been sitting in front of the world gen quite a long time. My current fortress is running pretty well, but it's also... a bit boring. I'd actually love to embark on something really fancy. At the top of a volcano that's standing on a beach with a goblin fortress nearby or something of that sort.

But world gen just won't offer me such a cool neighborhood. And every time I'm messing around with the parameters, I seem to be doing something wrong. Hm.

I mean, I could also just download a nice pregenerated world... but I'm sure you're familiar with the desire of having an own, unique, selfmade world.

Do you have any ideas for a cool location and how to generate it ?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Question: Separate Soldiers from the rest ?
« on: October 11, 2008, 07:45:14 am »
Hey guys,
I have a question: Is there any way to seperate my military dwarves from the rest of the fortress ?
I've build barracks/a sparring room and also an own dining room for them and assigned a table for every soldier so that they wouldn't eat in the "official" dining room. Plus: I placed a few stockpiles in the military dining room so that they wouldn't leave the place to get food.
However, they still leave to visit the meeting hall or the zoo or whatever. Is there anyway to keep them inside their little micro cosmos ? Something I can do with doors or areas ? If i just locked them up, there wouldn't be anybody filling up their stockpiles and they would starve..

Any ideas ?

In don't know, but... doesn't anyone find it kind of annoying when you have for example a legendary miner that digs slower than he did at the beginning of the game when he was still a normal one ?

DF Gameplay Questions / My whole world shattered.
« on: October 09, 2008, 07:46:37 am »
I recently installed the 40d version of DF. When I started playing, I was kind of confused because the game was running way too fast. Dwarfs were digging and running around like hell ! Then I checked up the FPS via the FPS-counter. I did that with the 40d version and the 39e version wich I was using before. And than it smacked me in the face: Before using the 40d version, which runs with 100fps on my computer, I have only been playing with 33 FPS ! THIRTY-THREE-FPS. Which is ONE THIRD of the speed that the game USUALLY has. I didn't even know !
And know I even set the FPS of the 40d version to a max of 33 fps because I can't handle those lightspeed dwarves; it's just too strange !
Now I do at least know why I've always been so slow in succession games...

DF Suggestions / Re: Feces and Urine

You might find it difficult to believe, but there actually are people that finds excrements distasteful.
While vomit trails ... aren't?

(1) This is funny. (2) This too is funny. However, if you think those would be funny with faeces instead you're in serious need of psychiatric rehabilitation.

This is actually funny, too.

Actually, I added the feces-and-urine-suggestion to the eternal suggestion voting:

http://www.bay12games.com/forum/eternal_voting.php

I summon anybody who digs poopoo as much as I do to
STAND UP FOR FECES AND URINE !

That's an excellent idea, then you know who to invite for your coprophiliac club! K, have fun, but not anywhere near me thnx!

I knew that my struggle for dwarven caviar would lead to some nasty attacks against my person. Really, I don't want to fight with anybody, I just totally dig this whole feces thing (uhhm.. ugh.)

Limb removal: lopping off limbs is so much cooler than "critical hit! -4895 hit points!"  If you think otherwise, go play Pokemon where you coerce wild animals to beat the snot out of each other for your own personal gain and amusement and where no one can die, ever

And where nobody ever takes a crap ! See what I mean ?
I really don't want to offend anybody, and I don't want to let anybody believe I'm a poo lover.
But I can't really imagine that somebody would find little tiles of poo (that would, if you're not doing essential mistakes, land somewhere in the woods or in sewers) more offensive than (inevitable) violence.
Seriously, I don't think anybody would find it offensive to drown a dozen goblins in magma. Although the scenario does sound really macabre if you think about it further, it's still a part of a game that expresses itself through ASCII, which lets you decide how abstract or how detailed you picture the information about what's happening.

Of course it would be stupid if I judged what people should find disgusting and what not. Everybody has it's personal taste. But I can't really imagine that feces in an ASCII game could be much of a problem, though.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Your trap ideas !
« on: October 06, 2008, 06:41:28 pm »
Hey guys !
I thought it would be a neat idea to start a thread m where everybody could post his very own ideas for selfmade traps. Not like the standart cage or stonefall trap. Something more interesting that you can do with pressure plates, magma, exploding booze, carp and all that stuff.
and maybe we could even start an "selfmade traps" article in the Dwarf Fortress Wiki.

Ideas anyone ?

Actually, I really like this whole idea.
I mean, imagine that: Your dwarves are sick of going outside to.. you know. So you decide to build some sewers. The feces the dwarfs produce would then be channelled into a magma or water stream.

But watch out !

The mentioned water stream should of course not be the source of the dwarves drinking water. This could cause diseases and stuff. And you should probably make sure not to dig your sewers into sand because the feces could ooze into the ground water, thus also infecting dwarves drinking it. leaking sewers polluting drinking water are actually a totally medieval problem, thus fitting into the fantasy world of dwarf fortress pretty well.

And additionaly, water and magma should not be the only fluids that could possibly flood your fortress. Imagine the following: You decide to expand the space designated for the nobels' quarters. You receive a message that says that your miner detected damp and warm stone. Without giving it a second thought, you tell your dwarf to go on. And suddenly... all your nobles are standing knee-high in shit !

PLUS: It would be hilarious to make the sewers a part of your defense system. flooding rooms with feces in case of a goblin invasion would be awesome.

Fun and jokes aside, I think that this whole sanitarian and sewers thing would be a cool challenge for the player.

DF Suggestions / Re: A WINCH to lift whatever you want !
« on: October 04, 2008, 07:12:46 am »
Or one could build it on top of a volcano, attach a magma-proof cage trap to it and fish for fire imps. I think that would be fancy.
However, I really like the idea of attaching objects like walls to it. Shutting your entrance with such a wall during a goblin siege would be lots of fun.

Or have it weight activated...

You order your troops into the lift cage, and they drop several z-levels into the middle of the goblin army.  When they get out, the cage shoots back up out of the goblin's reach, and ready to load the next batch of troops.

I think that would be a neat way to send soldiers/ monsters into an arena.

DF Suggestions / A WINCH to lift whatever you want !
« on: October 03, 2008, 10:16:16 am »
Hey guys,
I'm new on this board and I would like to share a suggestion with you
that I have:

THE WINCH !

Oh yeah, it's a winch. Let me explain the concept to you:

There is an object that you would like to see moved on the z-axis. Let's say it's a huge rock that you want to be hanging over your entrance that is supposed to fall down and smash possible invaders.
The construction of the winch should basically work like the construction of a lever: You build the winch, just as you build the lever. Then you attach an object to it, in our example, it's the rock. In order to be able to attach the winch to the rock,  you need three things: a wheel, another wheel and a chain. This works approximately like linking a lever to an object, which you need mechanics for.
When the consctruction is finished, you can tell a dwarf to lift the object via the winch. When it's up there, the winch will be locked automatically.
There are several things that you could do know. One can tell the dwarf to unlock the winch and let the rock fall down, but this wouldn't work for our trap-example. Instead, you build a pressure plate behind the entrance and attach it to the winch. This way, the winch will be unlocked automatically. After the rock has fallen down, you can tell a dwarf to lift it and the trap is ready again.

The trap is of course just an example. You could also use the winch as a lift to move objects or persons. Therefore, you could make use of an option that you can set up: When you select the winch, you can set up how many z-levels the lift is supposed to be moved and wether it should move up or down. A dwarf that is told to use the winch will then move the lift, let's say, three levels down, to your stockpiles. Or three levels up, into your defense tower. Or you could lift a platform with cages six levels down in order to drown a bunch of goblins in a magma stream.

Again: just an example ! The possibilities are AMAZING !

You could also use it to:

-build your custom sized floodgate that can be lifted up/ down to reveal/
repress the power of a huge magma/water lake
-lift a piece of floor down in order to transport surprised invaders into your chambers
-use a lift to frequently drown your miasma-spilling reject stockpiles in a sea
of magma, thus burning the trash and cleaning the stockpiles
-build a crematorium
-lift down a massive wall in front of your door to shut it in case of an invasion

Or whatever you like !

I would really like to hear some comments/ideas/suggestions or whatever from you,

teefek
