DF General Discussion / Random dwarf fortress based animation
« on: June 23, 2012, 08:02:24 pm »
(I hope this is the right forum for this)

I made a short animation based on dwarf fortress years ago. Just now got it up on youtube with sound and stuff.

Here's a link to it.

This was done for an animation class in school. It's kinda crude, but I thought I'd share it anyways!

Well I got a sound editor guy from another forum.

I'll post the animation once it's finished. Hopefully next week or so.

I made a dwarf fortress inspired animation for animation class about half a year ago. Now I was hoping to finally finish it but I really can't do the sound editing and whatnot.

So I was wondering if there are any people experienced in sound editing (or whatever you call it) who'd like to do the sound work for it? It's about a minute long.

Here's a screen!

Yes, making nearly naked dwarves covered in vomit and blood did cross my mind, but decided to go with this slightly cartoonish style instead.

how long did that take you? and, what program are you using?
Started a few weeks ago. Probably a few days of work on the dwarves. Cat took the longest because of various screwups. It's all done in 3ds max with CAT rigs.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
How much of this is free-hand? It looks like a lot of photoshop filters/effects or something similar were applied... You can ignore my question, I am just curious, the style is very interesting and I want to know how do you do it. The picture looks awesome and the atmosphere of the place is just great. <3 the lighting.

Well it's a bit hard to answer how much is "free-hand". I Did most of that with a few layers and fancy brushes in black and white, then made color magically appear with a gradient map. Theeeeen lots of different kinds of adjustementing and fixing with brush modes (mainly color dodge) and layers. It's pretty quick once you get a hang of it.

Bit of testing, kind of a mess.

Really waiting for those new underground features.

Woop woop

This is the leader of my military who defended my fort against a constant stream of undead elk for roughly 10 years.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do you build YOUR Dwarf Fortress?
« on: March 13, 2009, 08:20:31 pm »
I switch around whever I feel like doing something different.

Usually build a small fort on top of a peak of somekind connected with a bridge and dig down from there.

Lately though I have started making an entrance high up in the side of a mountain with a large ramp going down to the valley below with a bridge somewhere in between.

I tend to draw squiggly lines with mouse so it looks a bit more like it was just mined out randomly.

Just like it better that way.

Did their leader instantly get injured?

Has happened to me too, but never really investigated the cause.

I had one called CryptBasements (can't remember exactly).

Don't know if it's really cool, but turned out to be very fitting as I built an above ground fort and was trying to defend it with the guard only. Buried the dead in the halls under the fort and had about 90 filled coffins before that last siege killed everyone.

Did the economy kick in?

I started losing dwarves in one fort like this too... I think it was because they couldnt buy anything to eat... or something. Thats the only explanation I came up with back then.

Water in well might be contaminated.

You can use bridges to make water dissappear just like everything else. I think flodogates make stuff dissappear too, but dont know for sure.

Cliffs are sadly very rare.

Finding a spot with extreme height differences sometimes has no-rampy cliffs. I guess you can fiddle with the world gen, but don't really know abou that.
