...has anyone with the latest version ever had a dwarf with 18+ children to verify that it doesn't exist anymore? :P

Of course, it's in 40d, and nobody else plays 40d anymore, but... I think I found a bug and I've never read about it on the forums!!! It seems that after 18 children, the titles wrap around and the 18th child is magically the Eldest Son, the 19th is Eldest Daughter, etc. (as appropriate for gender). Check it out at http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=7290 --- Besmar Thocitcatten has 19 children, and they wrap around. Whoa.

(It also shows up in the sisters/brothers of Besmar's older children; and Stukos Kessodel, one of the children of Besmar, has a "Second Eldest Daughter" who is a child, but all her other children (both younger and older, as listed) are still babies...)

I FOUND A BUG! WHOOOO!!! </celebrating>

As another player still of 40d (27 years and still strong! 45 dwarves, 6 dead, and only ever one immigrant), I applaud this story. I just read it start to finish, and it was more fun than playing my own story. I managed to wall my legendary cook into a sealed chamber and let her starve to death and have a season-change save without noticing, all because of Severedcoils. My Zon, worshipper of my Asen, salutes!

This is a masterpiece story. It menaces with masterfully worked spikes of fire, superior character, and is encrusted with rings of morality. It was created by KenboCalrissian in the late summer of 2010.

In your raws, use [DAMBLOCK:-42] or some ridiculously small number like that for the dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Building a Rimtar's Cube?
« on: August 22, 2010, 01:25:06 pm »
There hasn't been a lot of discussion of Urist Supercomputing's latest machines around here lately, and I just learned how to solve a cube. I got to wondering, though: how difficult would it be to build a Rubik's Cube analogue in DF? All previous supercomputing projects I've seen have been autotraps or simple adders; all this needs is a lot of memory copying and some sort of output device. Any excellent ideas on how to copy memory like this, or any other thoughts on designing a Rimtar's Cube?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What do you do when you find Adamantium?
« on: August 19, 2010, 05:55:17 pm »
Adamantine always has a 100% yield rate, even if you have a 0-skill miner. Something about the magical blue metal makes it come out easier.

Multithreading is trivial, with OpenMultiProcessing = OpenMP:

#pragma omp parallel for
{
//insert your A* here
}

and compile with -fopenmp, or the equivalent (all major compilers support openmp); and now we have A* that is about (your cpu number)*.9 faster.

Cuda is nontrivial. By non-trivial, I do mean way more work in almost all cases. Also, the person who pointed out cuda is best when you're not touching shared memory is quite correct.

Under sufficiently cold temperature, all plant-based materials, including logs, will take damage. I had an embark once on 40d where I had 3 days to get everything underground: at the end of that time, my logs had gone from logs->xlogsx->XlogsX->XXlogsXX-> ; and so had my cloth, and my dwarves.

It _is_ known that dwarves take 1.4 times as long to move diagonally as orthogonally: this was established back when diagonal movement was first permitted, in the first z-version, the one right after 28.

DF General Discussion / Re: Eye strain and DF
« on: July 13, 2010, 10:18:11 pm »
Ah, I appear to have found another piece of my problem:

I've been sleeping in the mornings, i.e. 4:30-11 (the sun comes up at 5 and it gets light at 4;30 here now)
I don't sleep with my eyes closed.
I work on the computer at night almost exclusively.
My computer has a backlight.

Hey look, my eyes have a light shining in the 24/7. Sad times. Now time to get back to normal sleep. Gnight!

DF General Discussion / Eye strain and DF
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:37:19 pm »
Greetings, oh honored fellow toadies!

I'm currently in the process of dealing with a migraine triggered at seeing an unpaused DF window (I think). I've had headaches from DF before, and it seems likely that it's a result of eye strain; and this makes me Very Very Sad, as I love my fortress of 16 in-game years.

Do ya'll have similar experiences of eye strain / health problems caused by too much DF, and do you have any suggestions on how to lower the eye strain involved?

Thanks!

Sweet Tea

I am almost certain that elves base their estimates off what you cut, not what's in your stockpiles, and that this has been so since at least 40d. Is there any empirical evidence either way, or just old dwarves' tales?

Second, man, here's to all the elvish players out there like me who don't torture and don't kill :)
