Other Games / Re: Does Steam look at browser history? (VAC domain reading)

It doesn't specifically look at browser history from, for example, Chrome, Firefox et al (though it may make an exception for the Steam ingame browser), but as mentioned in the Reddit post it checks the DNS cache of your computer as a whole.
Good to know. I read into it a little bit but honestly I'm not nearly computer literate enough to make that distinction.  :P

If you're really paranoid, you can always flush the DNS cache.
Lol... yeah I suppose I could (if I knew how to do that  :P). I'm not looking at any really questionable content anyway. It was just kind of a weird thing I noticed logging into the steam page. Could have been just a coincidence, who knows. I know some sites and programs do look at your browsing history and adjust their content accordingly. Funnily enough it really didn't bother me back in the day but as I'm getting older it weirds me out more and more.

It might be noticing that you installed SMITE, rather than your browser history. I know they gather a list of programs on your computer for survey purposes (I always opt out of sending it in) and it could be that the same list is used, locally, for other reasons EG searching for relevant titles on Steam to put on your front page.
That could be it as well.

I decided to test it a little bit further by clearing all my browser history and cookies manually, then searching for several first person shooters. (Quake, Doom, Duke Nukem, etc.) Sure enough there are 3 new first person shooter games on the front page that weren't there before. So... I dunno. It seems plausible at least.

EDIT: Blatant copypasta on the subject. http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/17/5421054/valve-isnt-tracking-internet--says-gabe-newell
SO>... I'm inclined to believe the Gaben on this one. I can't help but be a little paranoid about it though. Tracking browser history makes me feel all icky inside.

So, I don't know if I'm late to the party on this or something, but this caught my eye.

I noticed something weird when after looking at a let's play on SMITE and lasso'd into downloading it, I logged back into steam and found all the recommended games on the store page as free-to-play MOBA's, free to play RTS's, and variations on the theme. Indeed, the entire front page seems to list games as variations on the theme. I was curious, so I looked up if steam actually tracks my browser history. (I'm using google chrome.)

Well...

So, I suppose there's nothing wrong with trying to appeal to the proper demographics when advertising, but still I feel like this is kind of a huge violation of my privacy. Do you guys know if steam/valve still does this? How do you feel about it? Discuss.

I can't remember the name of this movie. I know it was asian and had a relatively good critical reception. What I DO remember though is that it had:
A gang enforcer or detective or whatever who had a detatched jaw that he kept in place through piercings. At some point in the movie he removes the piercings and bites some dude's face off.
An old man character who at the end of the film removes his baggy janitors outfit to reveal he's stacked like a professional bodybuilder.
Several extremely gory sword fight scenes.

I know it sounds like some sort of crazy fever dream but I'm kind of in the mood to watch it again. I just wish I could remember the name of the film....
Nvm found it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0296042/

Other Games / Materia Magica: New and Improved Moongate
« on: October 21, 2014, 10:24:29 pm »
http://www.materiamagica.com/

A pretty classic MUD that was pretty popular a few years back when it was known as 'Moongate'. (Changed due to copyright issues)

Definitely worth checking out. I'll post the description from the wiki here:

"The fantasy world of Materia Magica, Alyria, consists of four major continents, a massive underground area called the Great Alyrian Underground, and the Faerie Plane, an ethereal zone. The overall theme is medieval fantasy wherein different races live in strife and bloodlust is commonplace.

Materia Magica is a text-based game based on the principle of endless killing and leveling up. The game does provide roleplay and non-combat elements, such as a ship combat system and roleplaying enhancements, helping to expand the game's content beyond the typical hack and slash classification."

The description is somewhat lackluster, though the license was recently aquired by a new developer and they're looking to do a $100,000 rebuild on the client and website, bringing MM to HTML 5.

I know friends of mine that lost their entire high school and college years to this game.

It's possible that they'll work on wood before making metal thingies. I'd try getting rid of all your logs.
That's probably it then because in every case I had wood present. Just curious, which one is more profitable? Considering that wood requires an extra step (cutting down trees) I would assume wood planks sell for more but then again license plates require the press machine. Speaking of which they should really change the requirements for workshops to be just a saw machine instead of both the pressing machine and saw machine because if you chose to just use carpentry the other table just takes up space.

For some reason I can't get any sheet metal imported. After building a workshop and setting prisoners to work there no sheet metal gets delivered and they just end up hanging out in the workshop and then eventually stabbing each other to death with powertools out of boredom. Anyone else getting this?
The delivery/storage area, are they restricted?  That is where the sheet metal end up going.
Nope. They're behind jail doors but I have guards set right near them. The trucks just aren't coming with any sheet metal in them. Wood logs getting turned into wood planks works fine but for some reason they won't import any metal whatsoever. I'll try with a new prison and see if I get the same result.

That's the one. Thanks man. Earth 2150 is a (rather poorly made, I think) remake of it.

This game just recently popped back into my head and I was looking to play it, problem is I can't seem to remember the name of it.

It's an old game, with voxely or pixely graphics, but 3D. It's got a name like 'Wargame' or 'War-something' followed by a year, like 2050 or 2030 or something like that. It's an RTS, with the gimmick that you can design your own units based on chassis, guns, propulsion (wheels or tracks or even jet engines) that you research over time. It has had a few remakes since then.

Unfortunately that's all I remember. So, do you think you guys can help me out?

In fact, the only reason I move my RV nowadays is to get away from the literal MOUNTAINS of dog and cougar corpses that tend to pile up. The spawning mechanisms still seem to be a bit wonky.
