DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Help with caverns
« on: July 30, 2012, 05:53:18 pm »
Well I figured out what was going wrong, or at least how to fix it, so I'll put it here in case anyone else runs into the same trouble I had.

It seems that vanilla create new world doesn't use world_gen settings at all (anymore?), and I get what I want using the "Design new world with advanced settings".

I'm pretty sure that in old versions I just edited the world_gen file and ran "create new world", and that used the edited world_gen settings, but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Help with caverns
« on: July 29, 2012, 01:58:44 pm »
Hi all, It's been a while since I played DF (6-12 months) and I've been having trouble with caverns in the latest release. I like large open caverns, but no matter what i put into world_gen I get exactly the same type appear when I dig down (ie, tightly packed swisscheese, see http://i.imgur.com/6c9Op.png).

I've been using the following settings in world_gen.txt:

[CAVERN_LAYER_COUNT:3]
[CAVERN_LAYER_OPENNESS_MIN:100]
[CAVERN_LAYER_OPENNESS_MAX:100]
[CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY_MIN:0]
[CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY_MAX:0]

Any idea what I am doing wrong? thanks.

DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarf Fortress is the best game I have ever played.

Toady's desired outcome: enjoy working on DF.
Current status of outcome: being achieved.
Need to change: nothing.

This is the best summary as to why DF will not be open to other developers for the foreseeable future.  As much as I would like to see some much needed code optimization and possible multi-threading to speed up end game fortresses, it will not be happening.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Salt everywhere
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:19:40 am »
Dwarves happily drink from the well when neccesary. Hospital patients are not harmed by it. It acts just like water you would find in any other biome. And my wells plunge straight into the ocean.

Could be that Dwarf kidneys are better at concentrating salts than humans so they are able to drink sea water.

Fun physiology fact:  desert rats can survive by drinking seawater because its kidney can concentrate sodium far more efficiently than the human kidney

cassiterite is only found in granite :)

im pissed that even though i have a magma forge i still need coke to make steel :/

that's because steel is iron + carbon + heat.  So the coke isn't acting like a fuel, its acting as an essential ingredient.

My dwarves were all too busy drinking their beer to bother picking up Rudy's dead carcass,

I think you misunderstand.  That's called a wake.

Don't caverns have unlimited water?

Only if the water in them is touching the edge of the map (i think)

Winter arrives! And here is about the time I give up. I get another migrant wave;
of twenty dwarves. My fortress is in chaos, I'm desperately trying to carve out additional bedrooms and assigning jobs to these heaps of Grand Master milkers, animal caretakers or pump operators.

I think you're trying to cater to your dwarfs too much.  I hardly ever worry about individual bed rooms until much later in the game.  In fact my dwarfs are lucky if they get a communal barracks.  As long as you make a nice dining room dwarfs don't seem to care if they are sleeping in mud (may be a bug?).

As for assigning jobs for everyone, I always use excess dwarfs to clean up all the excess stone lying around via mass dumping into a quantum stockpile.  even with 100+ dwarfs I never have more than a handful idle.

make a well and designate it as a fishing spot, your fishermen will fish turtles out of the well, i had nearly 200+ shells

sounds good, I will have to try that.

i had a fortress whose entire economy was based on masterpiece serrated steel discs.  over 40000 each.  quite insane.  it isn't often you can build a weapon trap worth nearly half a million.

Yes, my latest fort is churning these out now, each is worth around ~44K if I remember correctly.

Not so much a bug I guess but I can never enjoy a fort beyond a certain point because FPS always drops too low.  I know there are ways of minimizing this but that is annoying to me as well and doesn't really do much to fix the problem.  I'm willing to bet that just about everyone has had forts they've had to abandon because of this.

I can only see this getting worse as more and more features are added if multi-core processing is not enabled.  I know this could involve a total code rewrite and may be infeasible for a one person coding team, but if it is possible it should be done before anything else.

just my 2c

I downloaded this game (latest version .08 as part of the lazynewbpack) because I thought I'd found something to play on my new low end netbook. "Ascii-based" I thought "That's bound to use up hardly any system resources". I think I made a mistake.

Yes.  Yes you did.  Don't let the simple graphics fool you.  This game uses a lot of processing power to control everything going on and you will see a marked slow down once you get more than a few dwarfs in your fort.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: starvation on duty

War dogs do not need to eat or drink.  No animals do, the only things in the game that need to eat or drink are sentient creatures under your control.  This means dwarves, unless you're playing another civ or confiscated animal-man slaves from the elves or something.

This.  Animals don't eat.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I hate caverns
« on: June 11, 2010, 09:33:57 am »
I think part of my problem is that, as the miltary screen continues to be pretty frustrating, I have a hard time setting up forces to deal with caverns

This and unkillable visitors are my number 1 frustrations.

Caverns are kinda cool, but what I don't like is the way all my caverns seem to be these bunched up passages, with no wide open spaces. I want massive caverns with the glint of gems in the walls, the ceiling obscured in darkness. I want an Orzammar, I want a Moria. I want CAVERNS.

That's easy to get by fiddling with the world gen parameters,

No, It wont stop,  I've had the same issue with a cavern dweller that managed to kill a forgotten beast.  The trouble being that I couldn't kill her as she was now friendly.  It was so annoying I ended up abandoning.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarf won't stop training!
« on: May 07, 2010, 09:45:14 am »
yep, this bug is most annoying.  I had one military dwarf go into a mood and become a legendary armoursmith!  But I could not get him to make any armour no matter what I tried.

He was able to do hauling even though I had disabled his hauling preferences after he became legendary.  I think that once they join the military their job preferences become locked in and there's nothing you can do to change them after the fact.
