Thanks again for another great video.  Eventually these will end, and that's sad.  I hope you start doing LPs of DF or another game at that point.  :)

No prob, cap'n.  I'm just glad to see you working on these, still.  It's appreciated by quite a few of us, and I'm even saving them all to burn to a DVD to give others when they get the game, so I hope you keep going! :)

First off, thanks again for the great videos. :)

One question that has constantly entered my mind when watching your videos is: "How do you safely build these water channels without causing your miners to drown?"  And in the magma video, you had started a small forging operation, but how did you crack into the magma pipe without flooding that room with magma?  It's just something that I don't understand.  Do you build some kind of doorway that can block the flow?  And if so, when you crack that final wall open, does the dwarf die?

Thanks! :)

How has support been changed?  I leave a few unmined 'pillars' throughout larger rooms.  Is that enough?

Thanks for the new ones!  This rocks.  I'm happy to hear you're starting a new fortress in order to do more videos.  These are great.

Chinook - thanks for posting your init settings.  I've been sitting around trying all kinds of combinations of window sizes and grids with only yuck as a result.  your example is exactly what I was trying to get!

Well great! :)  Glad to hear it.

Thanks guys.  I generally would like to keep up to date, but I was trying to use the same exact package as "Captain_duck" used in his DF video tutorials that he has been putting out recently.  And that was the most recent on the website he had linked to.

Thanks again to everyone.  I learned more than I asked, which is always a good thing.

I should have said that each time I test it, I am testing it by loading a save in Dwarf Mode.  My viewable area is still quite small (vertically) and centered (vertically).  It fills up the horizontal area, as I would expect.

Here is what my init.txt has in that section (I added the "GRID" stuff myself, per the tips in this thread):

[GRAPHICS:YES]
[GRAPHICS_WINDOWEDX:1280]
[GRAPHICS_WINDOWEDY:800]
[GRAPHICS_FONT:Guybrush_square_16x16.bmp]
[GRAPHICS_FULLSCREENX:1280]
[GRAPHICS_FULLSCREENY:800]
[GRAPHICS_FULLFONT:Guybrush_square_16x16.bmp]
[GRAPHICS_BLACK_SPACE:YES]
[GRID:80:50]
[FULLGRID:60:40]

However, things are unchanged when starting the game again.  I'm drawing a blank. :)

Thanks.  Just knowing that it is possible is enough for me.  I'll play with it until it works.

I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't a dead end, mostly.  I might even have to check out the Mike's Mayday graphics set.  Sounds like it's pretty popular.

Edit:  I'm not finding the word "GRID" in my init.txt at all. :(  Maybe mine is messed up somehow.  I am using a special pack of DF, but I would imagine it should at least be in there.  It's not. (EZPack_39e_GB)

DF Gameplay Questions / Increasing the viewable area...
« on: January 19, 2009, 06:51:36 pm »
I'm not looking to increase the size of the tiles, or to increase the size of my window, but to increase the amount seen at a given time.  I can increase the window to say, 1280 wide by 800 tall, but the actual game is still the smallish rectangle in the center.  Is it possible to see more tiles at one time?

Also, is it possible to change how quickly the camera pans over when I move the cursor?  It seems to move the screen up too quickly when I am trying to designate areas for mining.  (Often I try to match up the sizes of rooms so they are symmetrical, and the camera jumps when I move just a few spaces, recentering on an area beyond where I can see the first room.)

Obviously these two questions are related. :)  Thanks!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Quick question regarding up/down stairs...

If its virgin soil, he can dig the ramp directly into the ground - no need to build one after clearing the space. Not that you can't dig the hole and then build the ramp afterwards if you want to.

I guess I mislead you a little.  What I meant by virgin soil was that there was no other way down into this particular tunnel, as it had just been opened up.  So, if I really wanted to build a stairway/ramp at the 'leftmost' open space, he'd be able to build it from the ledge above, right?

What magic dwarf suggested was that if there were another way down to the tunnel, the dwarf would prefer to go down there to build up, but if there were not a way, he techincally CAN build from above.  And I was trying to confirm that.

So if there were another way down there he would walk around and go down there first, but if there were no other way (say I channeled this area out, and it's otherwise virgin soil/rock), he can build from a higher ledge, downward.  Right?

Thanks again.

Thanks.  It makes sense now. :)

Another question, and I drew a chart for this one:

If my dwarf wants to build a ramp or a staircase on a level below him, over a ledge, does he have to be down there, or can he build it downward, from above, on top of an adjacent tile?

Or do I have to dig a stairwell from yet another uncut stone area?  See the picture for both options.  Are both possible from the higher z-axis plane?

This picture is showing a situation from the side, obviously. ;)
