DF Community Games & Stories / Beengus, nobody
« on: July 01, 2023, 10:48:30 pm »
Beengus was a Kobold.  In 753, carrying only a dagger, Beengus tried to sneak past 10 of my steel-armed-and-armored guardsdwarves and was killed instantly.

I liked the name Beengus and looked her up in Legends only to find out she was effectively nobody.  A non-kobold.  A nothing.  A blank space in history.

Beengus was born in 683.  She was of unknown parentage.  An orphan.  She lived an event-less life.  In the summer of 752, Beengus decided to become a thief, operating in the wilds.   She had nothing and did nothing to add to history.  Except die ignominiously to a dwarf who outmatched her 100x.

Yet she tried.  For that, I made a monument: about the best I could do:

"This is a masterful platinum statue of Beengus created by Inod Kekimlikot.  The item is a rendition of The Arena of Flickering, an image of Beengus the kobold and a sock.  Beengus is embracing the sock.  Beengus is laughing.  The image was commissioned by The Pulley of Passion, a local dwarven government."

Rest in Peace you little nobody.  Somebody remembers you now.

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.42.01 Released

Is it freezing or bailing out?  I've seen a freeze during civilization placement, but I don't have reproducible parameters for it yet.  Hopefully some make it to the bug tracker so I can sort it out.

Well, it froze in Xubuntu too. It tends to freeze at around PLACING CIVILIZATIONS (7), but I doubt that haves anything to do with it. Playing in a world with default settings fixes it as far as I know.

Same here.  I've used several different parameter sets on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and it locks up every time on "Placing civilizations..." after placing the first one.  (i.e. if I have civs set to 40, it freezes on 39.  If I have 10, it freezes on 9....)  There's no one parameter set that causes this, it just stops every time I've tried.  Others here and on the df subreddit seem to indicate that the freeze only happens most of the time and if you keep genning worlds, you'll eventually get one that *doesn't* freeze.

edit: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS ... derp

Within minutes of my first fort, a dorf fell out of a tree and went "Splat" on the ground into several pieces.  I have no idea what he thought he was doing climbing trees in the first place.   The expedition leader got angry and punched my metalsmith in the head until he died of brain injuries, but not before he bit the leader's ear off and broke one of his fingers.  That pissed off someone else who broke my farmer's arm.  A tantrum spiral seemed imminent, but somehow everyone was happy just throwing things until a couple of migrants showed up and got to work.   Two dead, two injured (one permanently in bed until I get a Dr. to examine and fix his broken arm) within five minutes of my first 40.01 game.  Best. Update. Ever.

I have a personal theory that this is related to the "mystery babies" problem mentioned here:  http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=140075.0

My own fort was running along just fine until I visited the unit list at one point and noticed a "Goblin Baby (Tame)" on the unit list.  The more started showing up under the "Other" list, until I had a good 75 mystery babies wandering around somewhere in my starting area.  The more I got, the slower the game went.

For those of you seeing big slowdowns, see if you have a ton of babies that aren't actually in your fort under your unit lists.  I'd like to know if they are related.

This is an echidna.  Even though I think they are cute as the dickens, I would not grab it over and over.

I'll try to remember to post a screencap of his profile and his skills, but he's a rather humble Axedwarf at the moment.  I believe he is Proficient in several military skills and I believe he is Mighty and Tough and Tireless.  He is also the captain of his squad, purely by chance, since I just look at skills when new migrants come in and either assign them to a squad or put them into forced labor useful service.

I dug through Legends mode as best as I knew how and came up with very little.  I enabled "Cull unimportant historical figures" during worldgen, so I suspect his full story may never be known outside of his ridiculous kill-count.

I'll upload the Legends dump when I get home in case someone wants to try to further mine it, or re-gen the world and see if he still exists with full history enabled.

Those 1117 "Other" kills are historical kills from before he migrated to my fortress.  He's not a vampire, he's just killed a whole hell of a lot of goblins.

I'm digging through Legends mode right now trying to figure out how he's got such a kill list, but all I can see is that he fought an alligator, then migrated to my fortress.  I'm not that familiar with Legends mode, but I'll keep looking.

I can upload the save somewhere if someone thinks they might be able to dig out more information on this guy.  I'd personally love to see the history of how he managed to slaughter over 1000 goblins.

"WATCH OUT IT'S LARGER THAN AVERAGE FOR A MOUSE"

It's white and looks longer than your average cloak or cape....

I know there's a difference between crocodiles and alligators, and it may be related to the tail, which would make this inaccurate. Unfortunately.

I live in Florida, which (I am pretty sure) makes me an unconditional expert on alligators.  The main difference, as you can see in your excellent diagram is the snout.  Alligators have a much more compact, wider snout versus the longer, more slender and pointed crocodilian snout.  Also when an alligator is submerged, the nostrils will still be above water, as they are raised above the rest of the snout.  (Again, painfully obvious in your skilled illustration.)  Finally, alligators have teeth that protrude while the mouth is closed facing downwards, while crocodilians have teeth that protrude upwards.  As your alligator has its mouth partially open, this is more difficult to observe.  However if we examine the dentition carefully, we can see that the upper teeth would clearly overlap the lower jaw if the mouth were closed.

I cannot fault the skill and detail you have put into what is clearly a drawing of an alligator.

"Them's some pretty nice nails you got there.  They'd make a nifty crown.  I want 'em."

"RAWWRRRRRRR!"

*The hydra bites at Catten, but the blow is deflected!
*Catten is unimpressed
*Catten bitch-slaps the hydra in the fourth head, crushing the skull and driving it into the brain!
*The hydra has been killed

"Like I said...  Gimme."

*Catten walks away whistling with a pocket full of hydra toenails to make into a crown at the nearest village

The Forgotten Beast ledgekindred has come!  A humanoid twisted into humanoid form.  It's hair is messy and its spectacles are plain.  It squirms and fidgets.  Beware its caffeinated stammering!  ledgekindred is associated with computers, darkness and loneliness.

Honestly, if your mayor was not the vamp, the one who replaced him probably will be.  Almost invariably vamps have the highest social skills and almost always wind up being the mayor.  Check the mayor's successor for pointy teeth.  (And things like being former member of dozens of previous civs.)

Might as well kill them anyway, even if they aren't the vamp, who needs mayors.

Sometimes the health view on a dwarf doesn't necessarily show all injuries.  You sometimes have to view the full summary to see if they have bruises or bleeding.  Plenty of times I've looked at a dwarf's health to see nothing, only to go to the full preferences screen and see a page of "Urist McDoomed face is bleeding" etc.

I was going to say something to the effect of "I have an elegant proof but there is not enough room in this message box to write it" but Kidiri went and actually wrote it all out anyway...

So instead I'm just gonna go relax.
