It's not that I mind buying things from people who disagree with me, because I don't care what they believe. I'm taking issue that they are 1) assuming my beliefs from a popular emoji of a cartoon frog, and 2) care enough about my assumed beliefs to ban me for that.

Here is your misunderstanding. A rule that bans Pepe for its ASSOCIATION with hate groups DOES NOT mean they are claiming YOU are a member of a hate group for using it.
Memes have different meanings to different people. Pepe might come across negative and hateful to enough people that it warranted a ban on it, EVEN WITH THE UNDERSTANDING that it can often be used as a totally inert meme.

It's simply a statement that it may come across to enough people as ambiguous or hateful that it is has been decided to be banned.

I don't know where you live, but In Canada and US the "V" hand-sign means "peace" and is often used authentically as a positive symbol, but did you know the "V" hand-sign is considered offensive in the UK/Ireland/Autralia/Newzealand? Lets imagine a discord (with some population of people from all these countries) decides to ban the V hand symbol because IT IS OFTEN ASSOCIATED with hate, because a lot of people in that discord are from a culture where it is IN FACT a hateful symbol. You post it, NOT intending to be hateful, but instead mean it as a legitimate Peace sign. The moderators contention is that it's ambiguous, and that some people interpret the V sign as an insult, and probably isn't the best symbol to use in their server with many UK/etc people. They ask you nicely to stop using it. They are not actually claiming that YOU are using it in a hateful way, only that it can be (and in fact, WILL BE) interpreted as hateful to many people in that discord.

Instead of saying "Sure! Not posting the V hand sign emoji in this one server is a pretty small deal"
You say: "I wont follow that rule and if that's a problem you should just ban me now."

Well so far it doesn't look like the Steam version is an answer to anyone's prayers.

I don't know how you can say that. I came back after playing it to say 90% of what I initially made the Lazy Newb Pack to do has been made obsolete by the Steam version.

-Easily add graphics: No longer needed.
-Easily change graphics: No longer needed (see modding)
-Easily change settings without digging for the init files: No longer needed
-Utilities: New work assignment system and integrated mineral auto-mine from DFHack aims to fill the job of 90% of the tools I found necessary. Though I could see in the future several utilities still having some usefulness,
-Mods, removing aquifers, alternative graphics, etc: Workshop mod integration, and a mod-menu in-game now takes care of this.

The labor system has a complete overhaul with click-to-assign jobs, and less need to fiddle with it. I don't think its perfect and I'd like to see some tweaks on adding custom work orders and to be able to enable specific obscure jobs to specific dwarves. But it makes Therapist no longer the necessity it used to be.
Also it seems like Tarn is continuing to work on and improve these UI interactions.

Yo, thanks for putting in like 9 years of dedication into maintaining this Pidgeot  8)
It Dwarfs my original run for sure (pun intended)

We never really talked except in a very short PM almost exactly 9 years ago... I feel guilty about not checking in!

I'm amused that my layout and graphic design have been pretty much maintained through it all. I still have the original asset files btw, though maybe the program could do with an icon update? Would people riot?

I've been tempted to jump in and make some sort of contribution again for the last number of years, let me know if you could use some help somehow...
I'm still not a professional programmer but I've learnt some Python and I still have my crappy photoshop design skills :P
For now... I'll say hi!

and who knows when the Steam release might be?  (not me - I truly don't have any inside info)  When it does though, I'm expecting to "retire": the Steam edition should help beginners appreciate DF better than anything I can cobble together, and that's always been my motivation for this pack.  It's also been going for a long time - next May I'll celebrate ten years of the Starter Pack, with LucusUp's original-flavor LNP dating further back to 2010!

Ladies, gentlemen, dwarves, and other overseers; it is and has been an honour.  Strike the Earth!

If you want to say thanks, check out Toady's Patreon  ;D

Checking in for the first time in a decade  8)
The steam release is mere days away... and I see this!

You and Pidgeot (and others) have been dedicated on maintaining my little project for the last decade. I certainly would not begrudge you for wanting to retire, but really hats off to the work you all have put in to this.

Should I rise from the grave to take the mantle once more?
Well... I'm not really sure I can dedicate all the commitment necessary, though I have often wondered over the past ten years if I would return to contribute in some small way once again... If you or someone wanted to team up... lets talk.
You make a good point about how the new steam version might change the need for a LNP, and I wondered that too. I cant help but think there'd still be some desire for it, and there will soon be an uptick in people looking for mods, but it certainly will be a bit different with a more accessible game.

DF General Discussion / Re: Lazy Newb Pack - Very out of date :(
« on: November 16, 2013, 08:44:50 pm »
Hello guys. I think I have to apologize for my long absence.  :(

Yes it was my intention to let others work on and maybe eventually take over The Lazy Newb pack after I had released it open source. But It was NOT my intention to go dead silent for so long and have it be such a forced/jarring transition. I'm really sorry about that.
Of course other life responsibilities took me away from LNP, but I don't really have great excuses for why I didn't at least give you guys any updates on myself or re-direct you to other versions sooner, other than just my mind has been elsewhere.

Sorry for any frustration this has caused you guys, and I hope I haven't caused too much ill-will. I feel like a jerk and like I've just been trying to avoid confronting that. :(
I've updated the OP to link to the new Windows/Linux/Mac packages. If there's anything else you guys would like to see from me, I am happy to hear from you.
I do read and respond to my PMs too, if you wanted to say/ask me something in private.

Edit:

I just also wanted to say, on a more positive note, that I am really happy and proud to see how many people have cared enough about LNP to want to continue it and work on it. The fact that there is now working and regularly updated Win/Mac/Linux versions is really fantastic, and its something I would have never achieved myself. So, thanks to the DF community! You guys and girls are awesome.

So, just out of curiousity, will this Cross Platform edition supplant the original Windows version of the Lazy Newb Pack?

I am wondering because I am about to get back into Dwarf Fortress and I can test this version on Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 8 32-bit, at home.

Otherwise, I'll just grab the original LNP.  :)

It will replace the current LNP eventually when it is feature complete, at which point my own post will be updated with it. Grab the original if you want something to actually play with, as this version isn't finished yet. Please do test it out to make sure it's working though

@Goncyn: Good suggestion, it is done!

Yes! But open source mostly changes how people can contribute to the GUI. A lot of the work updating the Lazy Newb Pack is in updating the included utilities. People could always update the included utilities before it was open source, and people are still free to do that. The GUI is built to let anyone put whatever utilities/graphics you want in the LNP folders. But it's only happened a few times that people have done this and put up the link, probably because its a bit of work. Also it would be ideal if all/the latest versions can be found through this single forum thread, but if it ever were to diverge into a different thread I'd make sure to link to it.

I do appreciate the help if/when anyone wants to help in any way.
That being said, I hope to be able to get an updated pack out soon here! I'm just in the middle of moving!

Edit: Forgot to mention someone has put out a customized Lazy Newb Pack with the latest utilities. I haven't checked it myself, but it should work for those waiting for an official release (which will still happen soon!)

Thanks again Dricus, as I said in PM your work is much appreciated!

I've been able to do a bit of testing. Everything worked fine as far as I could tell on both my Windows XP laptop, and Windows 7 desktop.
On windows 7 machine, the first time loading the program took a good 20-30 seconds, and it first appeared as if nothing was happening. Subsequent launches were quick however.

Tested all the settings I could on both machines and made sure they made appropriate changes to the .txt files, it seems as if they do.

I also tried testing on my oldish iMac, but it failed to launch. I think this is because of too low Mac/Java version, its Mac 10.5.8 with Java "1.5.0_30" which I think is the max the machine will go (at least through software update)
EDIT: Never-mind, turns out in my java preferences an older version was being preferred to the newest version for some reason. I clicked and dragged the 1.6 (java 6 equivalent). Anyways, after that I got it working perfectly on my iMac as well, and verified that it changed settings and launched the game properly. Cool beans!

Oh god I have no idea what I'm doing with GitHub. It took me a bunch of commits to get it including the bin/debug folder with the LNP folder structure (Just for convenience). I decided on not including Dwarf Fortress itself for obvious reasons.

Question 2: Do we have permission to use a version of this GUI in our own mod packs, so long as we credit you (LucasUP) and the LNP GUI and adhere to whatever terms or license you're releasing this under?
Yes, you do!  :)

First: Thank you for sending me the source code 1,5 years ago. You know what I did with it. ;)

Second: From personal experience I'd say that people would like more tileset options, JollyBastion comes to mind. The same is true for fonts. Some ttf that is more readable then the original DF font.

Third: If you ever want to include minor, optional mods, you should check out Modest Mod and/or Accelerated DF and/or Fortress Defense. I know that several people asked about parts being incorporated into the LNP. Grazing for example seems like a thing people like to toggle. Same goes for the standardized leather.

First: You're quite welcome!
Second/Third, As you probably know, additional mods/utilities don't require any changing of the actual LNP code, just work on maintaining them in the pack, but still fair suggestions.
It would be good to get more flexible and separated tileset/graphicset options though.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Not loading correct savegame anymore?
« on: February 27, 2013, 08:28:06 pm »
I don't remember specifics or how to fix it, but as far as I remember these two things will cause this problem:

-Trying to load an older savegame with a newer version of DF
-Changing or upgrading graphics sets on an older savegame.

The only way LNP would have anything to do with this is that it lets you update graphics and savegames.

Now on GitHub
Released under GNU GPL 3.0
I have no idea what i'm doing, so tell me if I did something wrong/dumb.
I've included daveralph1234's changes in this version too, hope that's cool with you, I added your handle in a few places for attribution.

Holy, this thread exploded overnight :)
So I'm a newbie when it comes to all of the technical side of the open source thing.
I agree though, I should attach a GNU GPL open source license to this, and also start a github page (even though I'm pretty lost when it comes to code repositories)

I'm in no way tied to Basic. VB just seemed like a quick and easy solution at the time. I'm also vaguely familiar with C, and quite familiar with ActionScript/Javascript, but I'd be fine with the project going to any language. I think it would be easier if it were made with some graphical/visual program, but if anyone else wants to take lead with porting it in another direction, go ahead! What my own personal involvement in this project going forward is hazy, but I would be quite interested in learning or getting acquainted with more languages.

DF General Discussion / Re: Lazy Newb Pack [0.34.11] [V15] Now Open Source!
« on: February 27, 2013, 01:41:33 am »
I've made a few modifications.
Like I said in my PMs to you, very cool and crazy fast! It'd be neat to get it to save the custom utilities and run-on-launch settings across loads.
It would probably be good to keep this kind of stuff inside the Development Thread though

Lazy Newb Pack is Now Open Source!
This thread is for discussion and sharing of development, updates, multi-platform support, etc of the Lazy Newb Pack GUI.
This thread is a work in progress.

Download
Download the LNP Source code on GitHub
*Released under the GNU General Public License V3
*Requires Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express or higher. Open "LazyNewbPackGUI.vbproj"
*The folder bin\debug is used when you export/test the program, it includes the LNP folder structure.
*Does not include Dwarf Fortress, or any utilities or graphics packs. You must add them yourself. (You can simply copy and paste these from the official pack if you want).
*GitHub/Fork/Email/message me if you want your changes included in the main forum post version, or else go off and create your own LNP-based programs!
*You have permission to use a version of this GUI in your own mod packs, so long as you give credit and adhere to the GNU GPL License.

Cross-platform development
Help Test A Cross Platform Version of LNP!

I also wanted to say, sorry to any experienced programmers who look through the code and face-desk. I was essentially teaching myself VB as I was programming it.
