DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Spiral Ramp Design: Will this work?
« on: July 27, 2010, 11:55:37 pm »
I've been using a spiral ramp design in my last few forts that seems to work moderately well, although has a few noticable drawbacks. It's an octagonal shape with the ramps located in the diagonal spaces of a central hallway in a... let me just show you.

These two designs just alternate with each level, with slight modifications to the central and outer rooms to make workshops, bedooms, dining halls, stockpiles, etc.

Pros;
-Looks good when smoothed
-Adaptable to cavern levels, and to support fortifications
-Moderate walking distance between levels

Cons;
-No caravan access between levels (My depot is always on ground floor so this isn't so bad for myself.)
-Uses a lot of building material when constructing upwards.

DF General Discussion / Re: What music do you think fits DF?

I usually listen to either the default DF music, or blast some metal while dorfin. However, a recent spout of creativity, inspired by a seige that my current fortress experienced, produced this. I like to think it captures the mood pretty well.

Sorry, O great toady one. I cannot afford a donation at the moment.

Instead, please take this as a token of my gratitude for now.

Here is a notable one. Loses style points for being square, but is HUGE to make up for it.

That particular project has been done before.

As for how to do it, simply build a giant mould for the tower you want to create, building a tower as you normally would, but hollow. Build two seperate pump stacks up the side, and power them. Alternate dumping magma and water to create solid obsidian layers, remove mould, and presto. A tower, the way towers were meant to be built.

Usually on forums I identify people solely by their avatars and not their names. It always throws me off when people change their avatars, because I think it's someone entirely new posting.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What are you most proud of recently?
« on: October 06, 2009, 09:06:15 pm »
Just finished mining out my third of 54 z-levels on a 6x6 fortress.  It's slow going but this megaproject must be done for the good of all dwarfkind.

Haha, awesome. My next fort is going to involve hollowing out a gigantic cavern in which my city will reside. Looking forward to it.

I'm doing this now. Hollowing out 8 or so z-levels, one at a time on a 4x4 embark. gonna have glass windows looking out into it from the path to the trade depot. In the middle of the cavern is going to be a huge lake. Shit will be so cash.

On a related note (and on topic), I'm really proud of all of my miners recently. It must be hard work chiseling away at stone all day with a half broken pick while being underground next to a magma pipe. At least they get their *Dwarven Wine roasts* and Dwarven wine to look forward too.

Nah, he's running around.
Question;
Walk in, see Elven and Human diplomat. What do?

Edit; I agreed not to chop down 113 trees, seeing as we don't have that many anyway. I'm not sure what to so with the humans though. Make peace?

Edit; FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

I just got a phone call. I gotta get up really early tomorrow and won't be back until really late, no time to play DF. You may as well just use Tar's save, I didn't do much of anything.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I have a confession...

I'm curious if anyone has tried this.

Has anyone ever swapped the raws of magma and water at all? I bet the results ought to be interesting.

Or even certain elements of either element. For example, water sets things ablaze, whereas magma freezes stuff. I dunno.

I believe liquids are hardcoded. Otherwise we'd have rivers of booze and blood popping up in mods every now and then.

I confess to removing aquifers, and all non sand soil, If only so I can skip the painful process of site finding. Having an awesome idea for a megaproject ruined simply because you don't feel like spending another hour genning sites to find one that actually has sand as well as everything else you're looking for is dissapointing. And aquifers... aquifers simply aren't fun.

I've got to get in on this action. Sign me up for as soon as possible.

General Discussion / Re: Music?

I'll listen to any metal, really, so long as the lyrics are understandable and not screaming. Some of my favorites:

Lordi - "Devil is a Loser"
Metalium - "Sky is falling"
Powerman 5000 - "When Worlds Collide"
Soilwork - "Bursting Out"

DF General Discussion / Re: Game vs Forums
« on: June 06, 2009, 02:10:02 pm »
I am not even playing with DF since ~3+ months, because I am waiting for the new version to be released. Ah well, this is the only forum what I visit each and every day, because I like this community.  :)

This.

I occasionally will load up DF every now and then. But I just spend 10 minutes or so looking for a great site to build on before I give up. But even if I do find an awesome location, It's only the matter of choosing the right embarking tools/dwarves and not fucking up in the first year and the game becomes wicked easy, even with orc mod and other hostile civs modded in. I just lose interest in any long term prospects at that point.
